The fastest improvements come from two menus: Settings → Security & privacy (or Privacy) for permissions, advertising and diagnostics, and Settings → Battery for display, background activity and radios. Review those controls in that order, then test the tablet for a day. Privacy settings reduce what apps and Google services can access; battery settings trade background convenience and visual effects for longer runtime. No universal percentage gain is guaranteed because screen use, signal strength, apps and battery health dominate results.
Check your tablet’s Android version and menu names first
Android settings are not identical across devices. Google’s guidance covers Android tablets, while Samsung, Lenovo, Xiaomi, Amazon Fire and other Android-derived interfaces may rename or relocate controls. Search Settings for terms such as Privacy dashboard, Permission manager, Ads, Usage & diagnostics, Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery if a listed path is missing.

Some battery instructions require Android 13 or later. Pixel Tablet Battery Saver instructions cited by Google require Android 14 or later, and certain battery-drain controls require Android 15 or later. Install the latest system update available for your exact model before judging whether a control is absent.

Audit app access from Privacy dashboard
Open Settings → Security & privacy (or Privacy) → Privacy dashboard. The dashboard records which apps used sensitive permissions and when. Select a permission category to see recent access, then open an app to change its setting. This is the quickest way to spot an app that accessed a sensor or personal data unexpectedly.

Review the permissions that reveal the most
In Permission manager, inspect these categories individually:
- Camera and microphone: allow only apps that genuinely need recording, calls or scanning. Choose an option such as Allow only while using the app where available.
- Location: use approximate location or while-in-use access unless precise, background tracking is essential. Navigation, weather and automation may lose features when access is reduced.
- Photos and videos, files and media: grant selected-item access when the tablet offers it instead of the entire library.
- Contacts, calendar, phone and SMS: remove access from games, utilities or other apps that do not need to read or modify those records.
- Nearby devices and other permissions: keep access limited to the period when pairing, casting or transferring data.
Choose the least access that lets an app work, and revisit permissions for apps you no longer use. Removing a permission is reversible: return to the same app entry and restore access if a feature stops working.
Use the dashboard as a recurring check
After changing permissions, use the tablet normally for several days and return to Privacy dashboard. A new access event is not automatically malicious; it may correspond to a feature you used. Investigate repeated access when the app was closed or when the permission is unrelated to its purpose, then revoke access or uninstall the app.

Turn off ad-personalization inputs you do not want
Open Settings → Privacy → Ads or Settings → Security & privacy → Ads privacy. Android exposes separate controls for Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement. Turn off each category you do not want. These switches reduce specific personalization and measurement signals; they do not make every app anonymous, because an app can collect data under its own privacy policy.

Disable Usage & diagnostics when sharing is not worth it
In Settings → Security & privacy → More privacy settings (the exact location varies), find Usage & diagnostics and turn it off if you do not want to send device-use and performance information to Google. Google states that essential services, including receiving a new Android version, continue when this option is disabled. This setting does not stop independent data collection by installed apps.
Keep private information off the lock screen
Go to Settings → Security & privacy → Device unlock and configure a strong PIN or password, adding fingerprint unlock if your model supports it. Avoid a short, predictable PIN. Then open Settings → Notifications → Notifications on the lock screen and choose to hide sensitive content or show no notifications. Hiding content prevents message previews, one-time codes and account details from appearing while the tablet is unattended, though it also makes quick reading less convenient.
Review lock-screen shortcuts, wallet controls and the option to unlock without a credential. Disable conveniences that expose personal data or permit actions before authentication. Keep Find My Device enabled if you want to locate, lock or erase a lost tablet; confirm that your Google account and location requirements are configured for the feature.
Update the system and scan apps
Open Settings → System → Software update (or the manufacturer’s equivalent) and install available Android and security updates. In the Play Store, open your profile menu and run Play Protect scanning. Google lists Play Protect, Find My Device and system updates among the tablet’s security controls. Updates can fix permission behavior, close vulnerabilities and improve power management, so postpone installation only when you need the tablet immediately and can schedule a restart.

Settings that usually save the most battery
Shorten screen timeout and control brightness
Open Settings → Display → Screen timeout and select the shortest delay that does not interrupt your reading or work. A long timeout keeps the largest power consumer—the display—on after you put the tablet down. In Display → Brightness level, lower brightness manually or enable adaptive brightness. Adaptive brightness may need several days of corrections before it matches your preferences; adjust it rather than leaving the panel unnecessarily bright.
Enable Dark theme where the display benefits
Choose Settings → Display → Dark theme. Dark theme reduces light output in many interfaces and can save power on OLED displays, while the benefit on LCD panels is generally smaller. It also changes readability and the appearance of individual apps, so schedule it or switch it manually if a light interface works better for your eyes.
Turn on Adaptive Battery for normal use
Open Settings → Battery → Adaptive Battery and enable it. Google describes Adaptive Battery as learning tablet usage and continuously optimizing how apps use battery. It may reduce performance or delay notifications for apps that Android considers low priority. Leave it enabled for everyday use unless a particular app’s background behavior is more important than runtime.
Use Battery Saver for a deliberate low-power period
Enable Settings → Battery → Battery Saver when you need the remaining charge to last, or schedule it at a chosen battery level. Google’s Android guidance says Battery Saver turns on Dark theme and limits or turns off background activity. Visual effects, some features, network connections and app activity can be delayed or disabled. Streaming, messaging alerts, cloud synchronization and location-based functions may therefore arrive later.

Find and restrain the apps that drain power
Read Battery usage before restricting anything
Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage. Review the period shown and distinguish screen consumption from background use. A video, game or bright display can legitimately rank first; an app with little screen time but heavy background use deserves closer inspection. Open an app’s battery entry to see available choices.
Choose Optimized for ordinary apps
Keep the battery setting at Optimized for most apps. Android can manage background work without routinely breaking notifications. Test an app after changing its setting, because manufacturer software may apply additional limits.
Use Restricted only for proven offenders
Select Restricted for an app that consumes excessive background power and is not needed for timely alerts. Restriction can delay notifications, stop background refresh and interfere with normal operation. Do not use it for alarms, real-time messaging, navigation, accessibility tools or other services that must run when you are not looking at the screen. Restore Optimized if the app becomes unreliable.
Switch off radios and synchronization when idle
Turn off tethering or hotspot, Bluetooth, Location and automatic account sync when you are not using them. Quick Settings provides the fastest access, while full controls are under Settings → Network & internet, Connected devices, Location and Passwords & accounts. A hotspot keeps a radio active for connected clients; Bluetooth and location scanning can also wake the device. Disabling sync means new mail, calendar entries or cloud files may not appear until you refresh or re-enable it. Location-dependent apps will lose location features while the control is off.
Best Value
Choose the right trade-off instead of enabling every restriction
| Setting | Privacy or battery effect | Cost in convenience | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-app permission | Limits access to sensors and personal data | The feature may stop or ask again | Use the least access that still supports the app |
| Ads privacy controls | Reduces ad-topic, app-suggestion and measurement signals | Ads still appear and may be less relevant | Turn off categories you do not want |
| Usage & diagnostics off | Stops this optional device-use and performance sharing to Google | Does not stop app-level collection | Choose when diagnostic sharing is not worth it |
| Adaptive Battery | Optimizes background battery use over time | Possible delayed notifications or lower background priority | Leave on for normal daily use |
| Per-app Restricted | Strongly limits an identified app’s background power use | Notifications and normal operation can fail | Use only after checking Battery usage |
| Battery Saver | Limits whole-device background activity and some connections | Effects, syncing and app responses may be delayed | Use during travel, outages or low charge |
| Radios and sync off | Stops unnecessary network, scanning and background work | Connected accessories, location features and fresh content may stop | Turn off when you know the functions are idle |
A practical order for changing the settings
- Install pending system and app updates, then restart the tablet.
- Open Privacy dashboard and record unfamiliar camera, microphone, location, photo or contact access.
- Use Permission manager to downgrade or remove access, starting with apps you rarely use.
- Turn off unwanted Ads privacy categories and Usage & diagnostics.
- Hide sensitive lock-screen notifications and verify your PIN, password or fingerprint.
- Set a shorter screen timeout, lower brightness or enable adaptive brightness, and choose Dark theme if suitable.
- Enable Adaptive Battery and leave the tablet for several days so it can learn your routine.
- Check Battery usage; keep normal apps on Optimized and restrict only clear background-power offenders.
- Switch off hotspot, Bluetooth, location or automatic sync whenever those services are idle.
- Use Battery Saver only when the trade-off is acceptable, then turn it off when you need immediate notifications or full performance.
What to do when a change breaks an app
Notifications arrive late
Check whether Battery Saver, Adaptive Battery or a Restricted battery mode is active. Set the affected app to Optimized, allow its required notifications and restore any needed background permission. If the delay occurs only while the screen is off, compare behavior with Battery Saver disabled.
A feature says it needs a permission
Return to Settings → Privacy → Permission manager, select the relevant category and grant the least broad option that works. Camera, microphone and location access can often be limited to use while the app is open. Revoke the permission again if the feature was a one-time task.
The tablet still loses charge quickly
Use Battery → Battery usage to identify whether the display, a foreground app or background activity dominates. Reduce screen timeout and brightness first, then address the highest background consumer. Disable radios and sync that are genuinely idle. If one app remains abnormal after updates and an Optimized setting, uninstall it or contact its developer; aggressive restrictions can hide symptoms without fixing faulty behavior.

A menu is missing
Search Settings for the control name, check the tablet’s Android version and consult the manufacturer’s support instructions for that model. A missing toggle may reflect an older release, a manufacturer interface or a feature that Android does not expose on that hardware, rather than a configuration error.
How to maintain the setup
Recheck Privacy dashboard and Battery usage monthly and after installing several new apps. Permissions can change when an app updates, and a newly installed service may become the largest background consumer. Keep a short note of intentional exceptions—such as navigation location access or an alarm app—so you do not accidentally disable a function you rely on. When lending or selling the tablet, remove accounts and perform a proper factory reset after backing up data.
