A new Android phone is safest and easiest to use when you complete setup in a deliberate order: prepare and back up the old device, transfer data during the initial wizard, verify what arrived, confirm a cloud backup, create a strong screen lock, secure account recovery, install updates, and then audit privacy and theft-protection controls. Menu names and available features vary by Android version, manufacturer, model, and managed-device policy, so use the closest matching labels on your phone rather than expecting identical screens.
1. Prepare both phones before you start
Keep the old and new phones available until you have verified your data. A rushed factory reset can leave you without authentication codes, contacts, photos, or app data that did not migrate.

Charge, unlock, and connect
- Charge both phones, ideally to a high level, and keep chargers nearby for a long transfer.
- Confirm that you can unlock the old phone with its current PIN, pattern, or password. Do not rely on fingerprint or face unlock alone; a restart or security check can require the primary credential.
- Connect both phones to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi is needed for account sign-in, app restoration, updates, and some wireless transfers.
- Have the old phone’s SIM or eSIM details available. If you are moving an eSIM, follow the carrier’s transfer process before erasing the old device.
- Make sure you know the Google Account address and password used on the old phone, and that its recovery phone number or email still works.
Make a fresh backup first
On the old phone, open Settings > Google > All services > Backup and select Back up now. Google describes backing up the old phone first as the fastest way to transfer apps, messages, call history, and settings. A Google One backup can take up to 24 hours to finish, so do not assume a newly started backup is complete immediately. Leave the old phone connected to power and Wi-Fi while it runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a PIN, pattern, or password on the old phone rather than swipe or Smart Lock. Google says a secure screen lock helps protect automatic and manual backups, and the same credential may be required to restore protected data.

2. Transfer data during the initial Android setup
Start the new phone and follow the setup wizard. When it asks whether you want to copy apps and data, choose the transfer option instead of skipping it. On many phones, the complete transfer tool is available only during initial setup; postponing it can mean a reset is required to get the same workflow later.
Choose cable or wireless transfer
| Method | Best for | What to check | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cable | Large photo libraries, many apps, or the most dependable connection | Inspect the connector on both phones. A USB-C to USB-C data cable may be needed, and some combinations require an adapter. | Usually faster and less dependent on Wi-Fi, but you must have a compatible data cable or adapter. |
| Wireless | Phones with incompatible ports or no suitable cable | Keep both devices close, unlocked when prompted, and connected to the same or an automatically created transfer network. | More convenient, but can take longer and is more sensitive to battery level, distance, and connection interruptions. |
Google recommends cable transfer when possible. Check both ports before you begin: a charging-only cable, damaged connector, or missing adapter can make the phone appear not to detect the other device. If the wizard offers a QR code or pairing prompt, complete it on the old phone and approve the requested connection.
Select what to copy
The transfer screen normally lets you choose categories such as apps, contacts, messages, call history, photos, videos, and device settings. Select the categories you need, but keep expectations realistic: transfer tools do not create a perfect clone of every file and account.
- Review the estimated size and available storage on the new phone.
- Start the transfer with both phones connected to power if the estimate is long.
- Do not disconnect the cable, leave the transfer screen, or restart either phone until the wizard reports completion.
- Finish the setup wizard, connect to Wi-Fi, and allow the new phone to restore apps and updates before judging what is missing.
3. Check what did not transfer
A successful transfer means the selected categories copied; it does not guarantee that every local file, account, or app state moved. Keep the old phone intact while you perform this audit.
Files and media to inspect manually
- Files in Downloads, documents saved by browsers, and files stored in app-specific folders.
- Photos, videos, or music in hidden folders or locations not indexed by the normal gallery or media picker.
- Ringtones, alarms, notification sounds, and other audio files you added yourself.
- Files on removable storage or in a manufacturer-specific folder that the transfer wizard did not list.
Apps and accounts that need separate work
- Apps installed outside Google Play may need to be downloaded again from their original, trustworthy source.
- Apps that do not use Android backup may restore only the app itself, not its local data. Open each important app and check its own export, sync, or sign-in option.
- Non-Google accounts, including work, school, email, and social accounts, may require a fresh sign-in and additional verification.
- Some non-Google contacts and calendars may be stored only in the old phone’s local database or a manufacturer account. Export or sync them before wiping the old device.
- App permissions, notification channels, home-screen layouts, and other settings can differ after restoration even when the app is present.
A practical verification pass
- Open the phone app and confirm recent contacts, call history, and voicemail access.
- Open your messaging app and check recent conversations, attachments, and verification-message delivery.
- Browse the camera gallery, Google Photos or your chosen photo service, Downloads, and a file manager.
- Launch financial, password-manager, authenticator, health, travel, and work apps. Confirm that sign-in and stored records are available before deleting the old installation.
- Place a test call, send a message, connect Bluetooth accessories, and verify mobile data after the SIM or eSIM is active.
4. Confirm a usable cloud backup
After setup, check backup status on the new phone as well as the old one. Go to Settings > Google > All services > Backup and use Back up now if the status is stale or incomplete. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power while the backup runs; Google states that a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours.

Check the date and time of the most recent backup, the Google Account receiving it, and the categories included. A backup is useful only if you can access the account that owns it. If you use more than one Google Account, verify which account the phone is using for backup rather than assuming it is the first account you added.
5. Set a strong screen lock
Open the phone’s screen-lock settings and choose a PIN, pattern, or password. Google recommends a PIN of six digits or longer. A longer PIN or a password resists guessing better than a short code, while a pattern can be convenient but may leave visible traces on a smudged screen.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Lock type | When it fits | Security consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Six-digit-or-longer PIN | Most users who want a fast, strong default | Use a non-obvious sequence; avoid birthdays, repeated digits, or keypad shapes. |
| Password | People who can tolerate slower unlocking for stronger resistance to guessing | Use a unique password that is not reused elsewhere. |
| Pattern | Users who prefer gesture entry | Choose a complex pattern and clean the display regularly to reduce visible trails. |
Biometric unlock can remain enabled for convenience, but retain the primary PIN, pattern, or password. The primary credential is required after some restarts and security events, and it is the credential associated with protecting backed-up data. Swipe-only unlocking and Smart Lock do not provide the same protection.
6. Secure account recovery and factory-reset protection
Add the correct Google Account during setup and review its recovery details. Confirm that the recovery phone number and email address are current, and complete any security prompts or two-step verification requests while you still have access to the old phone.
Android device protection is designed to prevent someone else from using a phone after an unauthorized factory reset. After a protected reset, the device can require the existing screen lock or a Google Account that was previously synced to it. Before you erase the old phone, record the account credentials you will need and verify that you can sign in from another device or browser.

- Move authenticator entries, passkeys, and recovery codes using each service’s supported transfer process.
- Remove work or school management only according to the organization’s instructions; managed-device policies can change which reset and transfer options are available.
- Sign out of accounts that you are transferring or retiring, then remove the old phone from account device lists when appropriate.
- Only after the checks above should you remove the SIM or eSIM and perform a factory reset.
7. Run the Security & privacy audit
On Android 13 and later, security and privacy controls are commonly grouped under Settings > Security & privacy. Older versions may show separate Security and Privacy pages. Treat this area as a checklist rather than a single switch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Install system and app updates
Check for Android system updates and Google Play system updates, then open Google Play and update installed apps. Restart if the phone requests it. A new phone may have been manufactured months before you bought it, so its first update check is important.
Check Play Protect and account alerts
Review Google Play Protect’s scan status and resolve any warning. Read account-security alerts for unfamiliar sign-ins, changed recovery details, or devices you do not recognize. Do not dismiss an alert until you have identified the activity.
Review permissions and app access
Inspect which apps can access location, camera, microphone, contacts, files, nearby devices, and notifications. For each permission, decide whether the app needs it all the time, only while in use, or not at all. Revoke access that does not match the app’s purpose, then test the app so you can restore a permission if a feature genuinely requires it.
Control lock-screen exposure
Review lock-screen notification visibility. Showing full notification content can expose messages, one-time codes, appointment details, or work information to anyone who can see the screen. Hiding sensitive content preserves alerts while limiting what appears before unlocking.

Confirm device finding
Check that Google’s device-finding service (Find Hub or the equivalent label on your version) is enabled, that the phone is signed in to the intended Google Account, and that location and connectivity settings meet its requirements. Test the account’s device list from another trusted device if practical.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Enable theft-protection controls when your phone supports them
Google documents several theft-protection features, but availability depends on Android version and model. Look for them in Security & privacy or related device-security settings; do not assume that a missing option means it is hidden under a different name or available on every phone.
Theft Detection Lock
This feature is designed to respond to signals associated with a phone being snatched. If your device offers it, read the description and enable it if the behavior suits you. Test how it affects your normal use before relying on it.
Offline Device Lock
Offline Device Lock can lock the screen when a phone remains disconnected from the internet under the conditions defined by Android. It is useful against attempts to keep a stolen phone offline, but its exact triggers and availability vary.
Failed Authentication Lock
Failed Authentication Lock can respond to repeated unsuccessful unlock attempts. Use a screen lock you can reliably remember; repeated mistakes can make recovery slower and may trigger additional verification.

Tinplate-reinforced connectors help protect against breakage at stress points. With gold-plated USB-C contacts, 86% high-purity tinned copper conductors, and a triple-layer shielding system (graphene + aluminum foil + internal shielding), it ensures reduced interference and consistently stable transmission
Remote Lock
Remote Lock requires a screen lock, an active SIM, a verified phone number, Find Hub, and an internet connection. Check each prerequisite before you need it. If the phone is offline, a remote request cannot take effect until it reconnects.
9. Tune privacy and convenience settings deliberately
After the security audit, adjust convenience features one at a time so you know what changed. Review default apps, backup account selection, location access, notification behavior, Bluetooth visibility, and automatic app permissions. A stricter setting can reduce exposure but may remove functionality; test navigation, payments, media casting, and work apps after each change.
Keep a short record of important choices
- Write down the phone’s model, Android version, and the Google Account used for backup.
- Store the screen-lock credential in your password manager or another secure place, not in an unsecured note.
- Record which authenticator, passkey, and recovery-code transfers are complete.
- Note any app or account that still exists only on the old phone so you do not erase it accidentally.
10. Troubleshoot common setup problems
The phones do not detect a cable
- Check that the cable supports data, not only charging.
- Inspect both connectors for debris or damage and try the adapter recommended for the port combination.
- Unlock the old phone and accept any USB or transfer prompt.
- If cable transfer still fails, restart both phones and use the wireless option during setup.
The transfer stopped or appears incomplete
- Reconnect both phones to power and Wi-Fi, then restart the transfer from the setup wizard if it offers that option.
- Check free storage on the new phone and deselect large categories temporarily.
- Do not erase the old phone; use the manual audit for files and app data that Android backup does not cover.
An app is present but its data is missing
Sign in to the app and look for its own restore, sync, export, or import function. Apps that do not use Android backup may not restore local databases, downloaded media, or device-specific settings. Contact the app provider only after checking its documented migration path.
You cannot pass account verification after a reset
Use the Google Account previously synced to the protected phone or the screen-lock credential requested by the device. If you recently changed the account password, allow Google’s security systems time to recognize the change and use the account’s official recovery process rather than repeatedly guessing credentials.
