Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare your Android phone while you still have coverage: download a complete offline Google Maps area, save essential information, enable Wi‑Fi calling if your carrier supports it, configure Emergency SOS, and decide whether Airplane mode should disable cellular radios while retaining Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth. Offline navigation and emergency features have important limits, so test the exact setup before you leave.
Start with the right goal: navigation, communication, or safety
“No cell service” can mean several different situations. You might have Wi‑Fi at a lodge but no carrier signal, be completely disconnected in a remote area, or have intermittent coverage that is too weak for dependable navigation. The best settings depend on which capability matters most.

- Offline navigation: save maps and route information before departure. This works without an internet connection, but only within the downloaded area and with fewer travel modes.
- Wi‑Fi communication: use Wi‑Fi calling or internet messaging where a trusted Wi‑Fi network is available. Carrier rules and charges still apply to Wi‑Fi calling.
- Emergency readiness: keep Location Services available, configure Emergency SOS and contacts, and understand that some emergency functions need a connection while others use the emergency-call system.
- Battery preservation: stop the phone repeatedly searching for a cellular network, while retaining only the radios and sensors you actually need.
Android menu names vary by device maker, Android release, carrier, country and language. If a path differs, open Settings and search for the feature name rather than guessing at a similarly named control.
Download and test offline Google Maps
Offline Maps is the most important preparation for a trip where navigation cannot rely on a signal. Download the area before leaving coverage and make sure it includes every road in the planned drive, not merely the destination pin.

Download a destination area
- Open Google Maps while connected to the internet.
- Search for the destination and open its place sheet.
- Choose More, then Download offline map.
- Adjust the rectangle so it covers the approach roads, destination and any likely detours, then confirm the download.
You can also open your profile in Google Maps, choose Offline maps, and select Select your own map to define a custom area. A route that crosses outside the saved area is not fully covered, even if most of the journey is inside it.
Know exactly what offline driving can and cannot do
Google says offline driving guidance can guide you when the entire route is inside the downloaded map and the internet connection is slow or unavailable. It does not provide live traffic information or alternate routes. Offline transit, bicycling and walking directions are unavailable. If your trip includes a bus connection, a hike or a cycle route, save those details separately while online instead of assuming the downloaded driving map will replace them.
Check storage, expiry and updates
Offline areas normally save to internal storage. On Android versions that support it, Google Maps can use an SD card; check the app’s offline-map storage setting before downloading a large region. Offline areas must be updated before they expire. Google Maps attempts to update an area automatically when it has 15 days or less remaining, provided the phone is connected to Wi‑Fi. Do not rely on that attempt for a trip: open Google Maps > profile picture > Offline maps and update the area manually before departure.
Run a no-signal test
After the download finishes, switch on Airplane mode, turn Wi‑Fi back off, and start Maps. Search for the saved destination or follow the route from your current position. This test exposes an incomplete map, missing storage, or a route that leaves the downloaded boundary while you still have time to fix it.
Save information that normally depends on a connection
Maps are only one part of a trip. While online, download or save boarding passes, reservations, permits, address details, reservation phone numbers, trail or road information, and any documents you may need to show. Keep copies in an offline-capable app or as files stored on the phone; a web page that requires a live login is not an offline copy.

Connect to your normal Wi‑Fi network and allow important app updates to finish before leaving. Android can save Wi‑Fi networks and reconnect automatically when Wi‑Fi is on and a saved network is nearby. This is useful at a hotel, airport or campsite office, but it does not create coverage where no network exists.
Enable Wi‑Fi calling when your carrier supports it
Wi‑Fi calling lets the phone place calls over an available Wi‑Fi connection instead of a cellular signal. It is carrier-dependent: the setting may be absent, disabled for a particular plan, or subject to destination-specific behavior and charges. Confirm the provider’s rules before relying on it, especially for international travel or calls to special numbers.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Network & internet > SIMs.
- Tap the carrier SIM you will use.
- Choose Wi‑Fi calling and enable it.
Labels can differ on Samsung and other manufacturer interfaces; Settings search for “Wi‑Fi calling” is the quickest alternative. Place a test call over Wi‑Fi before departure and verify which SIM is selected if the phone has more than one.
Airplane mode and Wi‑Fi calling
Some carriers, including Google Fi’s documented setup, allow Airplane mode with Wi‑Fi manually re-enabled for Wi‑Fi-only calling. Rates and behavior depend on the destination and carrier. Treat this as a carrier feature, not a universal Android rule. If the call fails in the exact configuration you plan to use, do not assume it will work in a remote location.
Use Airplane mode deliberately
Airplane mode initially turns off cellular, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth. That makes it useful for stopping the phone from repeatedly searching for a distant cell tower, which can drain the battery. On supported Pixel and Android devices, you can turn Wi‑Fi back on—and Bluetooth as well if you need earbuds, a watch or another accessory—after enabling Airplane mode. The phone can remember those choices for later flights.

Choose a radio setup
| Situation | Recommended radio state | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Completely disconnected area | Airplane mode on; Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth off unless needed | Stops cellular searching and reduces unnecessary radio use. |
| Known Wi‑Fi at a hotel or base camp | Airplane mode on; Wi‑Fi on; Bluetooth optional | Retains internet access and possible Wi‑Fi calling without cellular searching. |
| Offline navigation with accessories | Airplane mode on; location on; Bluetooth on only for the accessory | Keeps GPS-based navigation and the required accessory while limiting other radios. |
| Intermittent coverage where messages may arrive | Airplane mode off, or toggle it only when battery conservation is the priority | Airplane mode prevents cellular registration until it is turned off again. |
Airplane mode is not an “offline safety” mode. Emergency SOS does not work while Airplane mode is on, and turning radios off can prevent ordinary emergency communications. Use it only after deciding how you will contact help and whether the emergency features on your device require connectivity.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep Location Services available for navigation
Leave Location Services on when you need navigation. Location Accuracy can combine GPS, nearby Wi‑Fi, mobile signals and device sensors to estimate position. Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning can help apps obtain a better location even when you are not connected to those networks.
Turning off Location Services to save power can make your map position unavailable or less reliable. A better compromise is to leave location on for the trip, disable radios you do not need with Airplane mode, and carry a power bank. If your phone offers separate scanning controls, understand that disabling Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth scanning may reduce location quality in areas where GPS reception is obstructed.
Emergency location is a separate pathway
During an emergency call or text, Emergency Location Service or a carrier may transmit your location. This mechanism is distinct from the location sharing you configure for friends or family, and its availability depends on the device, carrier and region. Do not assume that a map pin shared with a contact will work when there is no internet connection.
Configure Emergency SOS before you leave
On supported devices running Android 12 or later, open Settings > Safety & emergency > Emergency SOS. Set the local emergency number, choose whether the action starts automatically or after confirmation, and review the actions your phone offers. In Personal Safety, add emergency contacts and medical information where those options are available.

Understand the hard limitations
- Android states that Emergency SOS does not work in Airplane mode.
- Emergency SOS also does not work while Battery Saver is on.
- Real-time emergency sharing requires Wi‑Fi or mobile internet.
- Availability of Emergency SOS, Personal Safety and individual actions varies by device and region.
These limits matter in a no-service trip. Keep Airplane mode off if Emergency SOS is your primary plan, and avoid Battery Saver when you may need the feature. If you must conserve power, carry a charged backup battery rather than disabling a safety function without an alternative.
Verify the trigger without placing a real emergency call
Read the confirmation screen and your device’s on-screen instructions so you know how the chosen trigger behaves. Do not activate a real emergency sequence as a test. Confirm that contacts, medical details and the local emergency number are correct, and tell your travel companions what you configured so they know what to expect if the feature is triggered accidentally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Balance battery life against useful sensors
Remote travel often means fewer charging opportunities. Battery-saving changes should remove unnecessary work, not the functions your plan depends on.
- Use Airplane mode to stop cellular searching when you truly do not need a signal.
- Keep Location Services on for offline navigation.
- Turn Bluetooth on only when an accessory is in use.
- Use Wi‑Fi only where a known network is available; otherwise leave it off if conserving power is critical.
- Do not enable Battery Saver if you are relying on Emergency SOS, because Android says Emergency SOS is unavailable while Battery Saver is on.
- Carry a power bank and charge before leaving the last reliable outlet.
Screen brightness, navigation screen time and background syncing can also consume power, but changing them should not interfere with your emergency or route plan. Downloading maps and files before departure prevents repeated attempts to fetch them over a weak connection.

A departure-day checklist
- Check the Android version, device model and carrier support for Wi‑Fi calling and Emergency SOS.
- Download every Google Maps area needed for the complete driving route, including approach roads and likely detours.
- Open Offline maps, confirm the area is present, check its expiration date and update it over Wi‑Fi.
- Test the route with Wi‑Fi and mobile data unavailable. Confirm that you can see your position and destination.
- Save tickets, reservations, addresses, permits, emergency numbers and other essential documents for offline viewing.
- Enable Wi‑Fi calling if supported, then place a test call using the configuration you expect to use.
- Configure Emergency SOS, emergency contacts and medical information. Check the local emergency number and trigger behavior.
- Decide whether Airplane mode will be on. If it will, manually re-enable Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth only where needed, and remember that Emergency SOS will not work in that state.
- Leave Location Services on and charge the phone and power bank fully.
Common failure modes and fixes
The route works until the last section
The downloaded rectangle probably ends before the destination or a connecting road. Download a larger custom area and repeat the no-signal test. Offline driving requires the entire route to be inside the saved map.
Best Value
Maps shows a route but no traffic or alternatives
That is an offline limitation, not a malfunction. Offline driving does not include live traffic or alternate routes. Check conditions and possible detours while online, or carry a local road map as a backup.
Walking, cycling or transit directions are missing
Google Maps does not provide offline transit, bicycling or walking directions. Save turn-by-turn details, timetables and relevant addresses while connected, and do not rely on the offline driving download for those modes.
Wi‑Fi calling is not in Settings
Your carrier or plan may not support it, or the manufacturer may place the control under a different SIM menu. Search Settings for “Wi‑Fi calling,” install carrier updates while online, and confirm support with the provider. Do not assume another phone’s menu proves your plan has the feature.
Emergency SOS cannot be enabled or does nothing
Check that the device runs Android 12 or later and that the feature is supported in your region. Turn off Airplane mode and Battery Saver, then review Safety & emergency and Personal Safety. Real-time sharing still needs Wi‑Fi or mobile internet; without that connection, it may not be available.
The phone battery falls quickly in the wilderness
A weak or absent cellular signal can cause repeated network searching. Use Airplane mode when you do not need cellular service, keep only necessary Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth enabled, retain Location Services for navigation, and use a power bank.
What to remember about a phone with no signal
Offline Maps can replace an internet connection for driving only when the complete route fits inside a downloaded, current area. Wi‑Fi calling can restore ordinary calls only where a compatible Wi‑Fi network and carrier service are available. Airplane mode can preserve battery while allowing Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth to be turned back on, but it disables Emergency SOS. Location Services supports navigation, while emergency location transmission and contact sharing follow different connectivity rules. Preparing, testing and carrying a power source are more reliable than changing a single setting at the trailhead.
