Use Android Keystore, biometrics, and Play Integrity for different boundaries rather than choosing one as an all-purpose security layer. Keystore protects non-exportable key material on the device; Jetpack Biometric and BiometricPrompt establish local user presence; Play Integrity gives your backend signals about app recognition, licensing, device integrity, and abuse. Your server must still authenticate the session, authorize the action, and apply fraud and rate-limit controls.
The production design that usually pays off is a combination: keep refresh-token wrapping, database-encryption, or signing keys in Keystore; require a biometric step before narrowly scoped high-risk local operations; and request Play Integrity verdicts when a backend action is valuable enough to justify latency, quota, and possible false positives.

What each Android control actually protects
Security failures often start with assigning a control the wrong job. The following boundaries are deliberately different.
Recommended Free Tools
| Control | Primary boundary | Where the decision is made | Useful for | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Android Keystore | Custody and use of cryptographic keys | Device hardware or trusted operating-system services | Non-exportable wrapping keys, database-encryption keys, signing keys, and keys restricted by purpose or user authentication | That a remote request is authorized or that the app process is uncompromised |
| Jetpack Biometric / BiometricPrompt | Local user presence | Device user interface, with a Keystore operation often unlocked after success | Confirming the person at the device before releasing a sensitive local action | Account identity, server authorization, or a guarantee that a remote API call is legitimate |
| Play Integrity | App recognition, licensing, device-integrity and abuse signals | Your backend after verifying a token through Google Play | Risk-based decisions for recovery, transfers, entitlement changes, and abuse-sensitive actions | A complete identity system, a session, an authorization policy, or a substitute for fraud controls |
Android Keystore is intentionally a key-protection system. Google describes it this way: “The Android Keystore system lets you store cryptographic keys in a container to make them more difficult to extract from the device.” That reduces extraction risk; it does not make every operation performed by a compromised app process safe.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Biometric success means that the device accepted a configured biometric or device credential under the prompt’s policy. It is best treated as a local gate for one defined operation. Play Integrity is a backend input: the client obtains a signed and encrypted token, but the backend verifies it and decides whether to allow, challenge, throttle, or deny the request.
Android Keystore: the right place for app-held keys
What Keystore gives you
Keys generated in or imported into the Android Keystore system can be marked non-exportable. Key authorization can constrain the permitted algorithm, purposes such as encryption or signing, padding or digest choices, and whether a user must authenticate before use. Where a device offers secure hardware, request hardware-backed protection, but treat that as a capability rather than a universal guarantee: hardware support varies by device, Android version, and key type.
Typical production uses include a key that wraps a refresh token, a key that protects a local database, and a signing key used to attest or authenticate a device-held object. The server should remain the authority for refresh-token validity, account status, and permission. Keystore protects the local copy and limits how it can be used.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
A practical Keystore pattern
- Define the asset and operation. Decide whether the key will wrap a token, encrypt records, sign a challenge, or perform another specific job. Do not create one unrestricted key for unrelated features.
- Generate the key with narrow authorizations. Select only the required purpose, algorithm, digest, padding, and user-authentication requirement. Prefer a hardware-backed key when the device reports that capability.
- Store only ciphertext or wrapped material outside Keystore. A database, preferences file, backup, or cache should contain encrypted data, not the raw secret.
- Handle capability differences. If a device cannot satisfy the requested hardware or authentication policy, choose an explicit fallback: a less sensitive feature set, a re-enrollment flow, or a server-side step-up challenge. Do not silently downgrade a high-value operation.
- Plan invalidation and rotation. Biometric enrollment changes or device security-state changes can invalidate keys configured for user authentication. Detect the failure, discard unusable ciphertext when appropriate, and require a controlled re-enrollment rather than looping on the same key.
Keystore’s important limit
Non-exportability does not stop a malicious or compromised process from asking an available key to perform an allowed operation. Authorization flags reduce that surface, but they do not replace server checks, least-privilege API design, or monitoring. For a refresh token, for example, the backend must still validate the session, rotate or revoke tokens according to its policy, and detect unusual use.
Biometrics: a local user-presence gate
Use the Jetpack Biometric library and its BiometricPrompt API instead of writing sensor-specific cryptography or custom biometric plumbing. Google identifies financial, healthcare, and identity-management apps as strong candidates for biometric authentication because these apps often need a convenient confirmation before a sensitive action.
Recommended operation flow
- Ask the server for a narrowly scoped operation. The backend can issue a short-lived challenge or mark a specific transfer, recovery step, or key use as requiring local confirmation. The server’s normal session and authorization checks still apply.
- Prepare a Keystore key for that purpose. Configure the key so use requires the permitted user-authentication mode and only the cryptographic operation the feature needs.
- Show
BiometricPrompt. Request the allowed authenticator strength that matches your threat model and provide a device-credential fallback where the product and policy allow it. - Use the key only after successful authentication. Sign the challenge or unwrap the narrowly scoped secret. Do not treat a boolean “biometric succeeded” value as a server authorization token.
- Send the resulting proof to the backend. The server verifies the challenge, session, freshness, and authorization before committing the action.
Biometrics are not an account-recovery mechanism. Users can lose enrollment, replace a device, or be unable to present a biometric. Provide a recovery path based on your account-security policy, such as re-authentication and a controlled re-enrollment process. Avoid making the prompt the only way to regain access.

When biometrics add little value
A prompt on every low-risk screen creates friction without protecting a meaningful boundary. Conversely, a prompt that merely unlocks a long-lived bearer token for unrestricted API use is weaker than a design in which the server authorizes one operation and the key signs one fresh challenge. Scope the prompt to the value at risk and to a time window that can be audited.
Play Integrity: backend anti-abuse signals
What the service is for
Play Integrity can help your backend assess whether a request is associated with a recognized, unmodified app installed through Google Play on a genuine or certified device, along with licensing and other abuse indicators. These are signals, not identity. A user can have a valid account on an untrusted device, and a trusted device can still be used for an abusive account or stolen session.
Standard-request sequence
- Set up the projects. Play Integrity requires a Google Cloud project linked to Play Console. Keep testing and production projects isolated where practical so test traffic and policies do not contaminate production telemetry.
- Prepare the token provider in the app. Standard requests require a token-provider preparation step. Google documents up to five preparations per minute per app instance; design the client to reuse a prepared provider rather than repeatedly preparing it in a tight loop.
- Bind the request. Hash the relevant request data into
requestHashso a verdict cannot simply be copied to a different operation. Never put raw sensitive business data in the field: Google warns that the data is visible to the app and Google, so hash or encrypt it first. - Request the token at the valuable moment. Obtain the token immediately before the action you want to protect, not at login and then days later.
- Send it to your backend. The client should send the token alongside the operation request over an authenticated, properly protected endpoint.
- Verify through Google Play on the server. The backend sends the token for verification, checks the returned request details, app-recognition and licensing signals, and then applies its own policy. Final entitlement and authorization decisions belong here.
Choose moments that justify the cost
Good trigger points include account recovery, high-value transfers, entitlement changes, and abuse-sensitive game actions. Calling Integrity for every harmless read adds latency and consumes quota while producing little risk reduction.

Interpret verdicts in tiers
Verify baseline request details, app recognition, and licensing before interpreting device labels. A policy can allow a request, require step-up verification, rate-limit it, or deny it. Requiring the highest device tier for every feature can exclude many legitimate users because fewer devices qualify for higher trust tiers. Match the response to the action’s value and fraud cost instead of turning one label into a universal block.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the three controls fit together
A defensible architecture separates local proof from remote authority. Consider a high-value transfer:
- The signed-in session reaches the backend, which checks account permissions, transfer limits, and fraud signals.
- The backend returns a short-lived challenge tied to the transfer details.
- The app asks
BiometricPromptto authorize use of a Keystore key. - The key signs the challenge or unwraps a narrowly scoped secret; the app never exports the key material.
- The app obtains a fresh Play Integrity token with
requestHashbound to the transfer request. - The backend verifies the Integrity token through Google Play, verifies the signed challenge, and evaluates session, authorization, rate limits, and fraud rules.
- The backend commits the transfer only after all required checks pass, records the decision, and returns an idempotent result.
For a lower-risk action, you might omit the biometric step and use a lighter Integrity policy. For an offline feature, Keystore and local authentication can protect local data, but Play Integrity and server authorization cannot make an offline decision authoritative until the app reconnects.

Measures that are usually not worth the complexity
- Using Play Integrity as authentication. It does not replace sessions, account credentials, authorization, fraud detection, or rate limits.
- Verifying tokens only inside the APK. An attacker who controls or modifies the client can bypass a client-only decision. Verification and entitlement decisions belong on an authenticated backend.
- Caching a successful verdict for later actions. A cached result can be replayed after the app, device state, account, or request has changed. Bind each protected action and request a fresh verdict at the risk boundary.
- Putting raw secrets or business data in
requestHashor a nonce. Hash or encrypt sensitive values before binding them. - Blocking every device below the top tier. High-trust labels cover fewer devices. Use step-up verification, limits, or review when the business risk permits access.
- Writing custom biometric cryptography. Jetpack Biometric plus Keystore authorization already provides the relevant local boundary for most apps; custom code adds failure and maintenance risk.
- Copying a sample server unchanged. Google’s codelab intentionally omits endpoint authentication and persistent storage. Production code must add those controls, protect keys and credentials, validate replay and freshness, and retain an auditable decision record.
Operations, testing, and failure handling
Measure before enforcing
Start Play Integrity in telemetry or a report-only policy where possible. Record the action type, returned labels, app version, country or region where relevant to your policy, latency, and outcome without storing unnecessary personal data. Compare fraud reduction with false-positive impact before turning a signal into a hard deny.
Design explicit failure branches
- No network or token timeout: fail closed for the protected action, offer a safe retry, and do not reuse an old verdict.
- Unrecognized or unlicensed app: direct the user to the supported installation or account path, or require a stronger review step according to the action’s value.
- Device-integrity signal below policy: step up, rate-limit, or deny; explain the next safe action rather than exposing sensitive policy details.
- Biometric lockout or enrollment change: fall back to the approved device credential or account-recovery flow, then rotate or re-enroll affected keys.
- Keystore key unavailable: treat it as a state transition, not a reason to weaken authorization silently. Recreate keys only after the server-approved recovery process.
Secure the integration itself
Authenticate the API endpoint that receives Integrity tokens, enforce replay protection, validate that requestHash matches the exact server-side request, and store only the evidence needed for investigation and audit. Keep policy decisions server-side so changing a threshold does not require shipping a new APK. Test rooted, modified, side-loaded, outdated, offline, and newly reset devices, as well as biometric enrollment changes and interrupted requests.
Quick Recap
A production decision checklist
- Need to keep a secret from ordinary extraction? Use Keystore with the narrowest key authorizations and hardware backing where available.
- Need a person-at-the-device confirmation? Use Jetpack Biometric and bind success to one Keystore operation, with recovery.
- Need to raise the cost of tampered-client or risky-device abuse? Use Play Integrity at the valuable backend action.
- Need to decide whether an account may perform an action? Use server authentication, authorization, fraud rules, and rate limits; Integrity is only an input.
- Need offline protection? Use Keystore and local authentication for local assets, while recognizing that authoritative remote decisions wait for connectivity.
- Need broad reach? Prefer tiered responses over a universal highest-tier requirement.
- Need predictable operations? Budget for quota, a few hundred milliseconds of standard-request latency, project linkage, telemetry, and recovery paths.
