Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf an Android reminder appears only after you open the app, the usual cause is a blocked notification permission, disabled notification channel, Do Not Disturb rule, or battery restriction. Start by confirming the reminder has a date and time, then identify which app actually owns the alert. Check that app’s Android notification permission, the Alarms & Reminders special access, notification channels, active Modes, and battery policy. Finish with a two-minute locked-screen test before changing broader settings.
Start with the reminder itself and the app that owns it
A timed alert cannot be delivered if the item has no scheduled date and time. Google Tasks requires both for a task notification. Open the task or event, add a date and a specific time, save it, and then check the app responsible for sending the alert.

Tasks, Calendar, and the Google app can all be installed on the same phone. Google says only one of them notifies for a particular task when multiple apps are present, so changing settings in the wrong app will not help. If you created the item in Tasks, begin with Tasks; if it is a calendar event, inspect Calendar; if Google is handling task reminders on your device, inspect the Google app as well.

- Open Google Tasks.
- Tap your Profile picture.
- Open Settings and then Notifications.
- Enable All Tasks notifications.
If the setting is already enabled but alerts are still missing, continue with Android’s system-level controls. Those controls can override an app’s own preference.

Grant Android’s notification permission
On Android 13 and newer, notifications are opt-in. An app must request the android.permission.POST_NOTIFICATIONS runtime permission before it can post alerts. If you denied that prompt, or never accepted it after installing the app, the reminder can be scheduled correctly and still produce no notification.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, choose the app that actually owns the reminder, and open Notifications.
- Turn on Allow notifications (the wording can vary by manufacturer).
- If Android shows a permission prompt, choose Allow.
Do not assume that enabling notifications for Calendar enables them for Tasks. Each app has its own permission. Check every app that could be the configured notifier, but avoid changing unrelated apps.
Allow alarms and reminders special access
Some Android builds expose a separate permission for apps that need to schedule exact alarms or reminders. Google documents this control as a fix for delayed or missing Google Tasks notifications.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Special app access.
- Tap Alarms & Reminders.
- Select the reminder app and enable Allow setting alarms and reminders.
This menu is not present on every phone or Android release. If you cannot find it, use the Settings search box for Alarms, Reminders, or special app access. When the switch exists, it must be enabled for the app that schedules the alert, not merely for an app that displays the task later.
Inspect notification channels, not just the master switch
Android 8.0 and later divide notifications into channels. A channel can be disabled or set to silent even while the app-wide notification switch is on. This is a common reason a reminder is technically posted but produces no banner or sound.
- Open Settings > Apps > the reminder app > Notifications.
- Open the list of notification categories or channels.
- Choose the channel named Reminders, Tasks, or a similar label.
- Make sure the channel is enabled and set to Alert rather than Silent.
- If you want an audible alert, select a notification sound and confirm the phone’s media or ring volume is audible.
Channel names differ by app and manufacturer. If several task-related channels appear, enable the one used for scheduled reminders rather than changing every channel indiscriminately. Android also allows a channel to request Do Not Disturb override behavior; that option matters only when the active mode permits it.
Check Do Not Disturb and Android Modes
Do Not Disturb can block reminders and calendar events even when notification permission and channels are correct. For a quick diagnosis, pull down Quick Settings and turn off Do Not Disturb or the currently active Mode. Create a short test reminder and see whether it arrives.

Android 14 and newer
- Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb.
- Open Notification filters.
- Review the people, apps, and alarms or calendar-event categories that are allowed.
- Add the reminder app or allow reminders and calendar events where those options are available.
Some modes have their own schedules, so a mode can reactivate automatically after you turn it off from Quick Settings. Check the mode’s schedule if a test works manually but fails at a particular time.
Older Android releases
Older phones may place these controls under Settings > Sound & vibration or a page titled Do Not Disturb preferences. Google notes that menu names and available controls vary by phone and Android version. Use Settings search when the path shown above does not match your device.
Remove battery restrictions when alerts arrive only after opening the app
If a reminder appears immediately after you launch the app, Android may have deferred its background work. Doze extends battery life by deferring background CPU and network activity while a device is unused for long periods. Battery optimization and manufacturer-specific “sleeping app” systems can impose additional limits.

Use an unrestricted policy only for the app that needs timely reminders. Doze exemptions reduce battery-saving protection, so they can increase power use. If the alert works with the normal policy, restore that policy instead of leaving a broad exemption enabled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a controlled two-minute test
Long delays make troubleshooting ambiguous. Use a repeatable test after each change:
Best Value
- Create a new reminder in the app you believe is the notifier.
- Give it a date and a time approximately two minutes in the future.
- Save it, close the app, and lock the phone.
- Wait for the scheduled time without waking the screen.
- Check for both a notification banner and the expected sound.
Interpret the result rather than changing several settings at once:
- Nothing appears until you open the app: revisit the battery policy, Doze-related restrictions, and the app’s alarms-and-reminders access.
- A banner appears but there is no sound: inspect the channel’s alert/silent state, channel sound, phone volume, and the active Mode.
- The test works only with Do Not Disturb off: add the reminder app or reminder/calendar category to that mode’s allowed filters.
- The test never appears: repeat the permission, channel, and special-access checks for the app that actually owns the task. Tasks, Calendar, and Google do not share one universal notification switch.
Choose the smallest fix that restores a locked-screen alert
These controls solve different failure points. Start with the narrowest change that addresses your symptom.
| Remedy | When it helps | Idle reliability | Battery trade-off | Do Not Disturb behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add a date and time; enable the app’s task notifications | The item is undated or the app’s own notifications are off | Restores the basic scheduling path | Does not change the battery policy | Does not bypass a mode |
| Allow Android notifications | Android 13 or newer permission was denied or disabled | Required before the app can post | Does not change the battery policy | Does not bypass a mode |
| Enable Alarms & Reminders | The device exposes this special access and Tasks alerts are delayed or missing | Improves scheduled delivery for the permitted app | Does not itself exempt the app from battery controls | Does not bypass a mode |
| Set the reminder channel to Alert with a sound | The channel is disabled or silent | Allows the posted alert to be visible and audible | Does not change background execution | Can still be silenced by Do Not Disturb |
| Allow the app in a Do Not Disturb or Mode filter | Alerts arrive only when the mode is off | Allows delivery during that mode | Does not change background execution | Specifically permits the selected app or category |
| Set the app to Unrestricted battery use | Alerts arrive only after opening the app or waking the phone | Reduces idle deferral | May increase power use | Does not override a mode |
Why reminders fail even when the task is saved
A reminder passes through several independent gates. The app must store a date and time, Android must allow the app to post notifications, the relevant channel must be enabled, any special alarm access must be granted when required, and the operating system must let the app run while idle. Do Not Disturb or another Mode can then filter the alert at the final stage. A failure at any one gate looks like a missing reminder.
Android’s behavior also changes with version and manufacturer software. Android 13 introduced the runtime notification permission. Android 8.0 introduced channel-level controls. Android 14 and newer present current Do Not Disturb controls through Modes, while older releases use different menu labels. Manufacturer battery managers can add their own restricted or sleeping-app lists.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking the wrong app: Google says only one of Tasks, Calendar, or Google notifies for a given task when several are installed. Identify the configured notifier first.
- Stopping after enabling the master switch: A silent or disabled channel can still block the reminder.
- Assuming Do Not Disturb affects only calls: Modes can explicitly block reminders and calendar events.
- Leaving every app unrestricted: Battery exemptions reduce Doze protection and can increase power consumption. Apply the change only to the reminder app, then retest.
- Testing with the screen awake: A reminder that works while the phone is active may still be deferred while it is locked and idle. Always perform the locked-screen test.
When to restore normal settings
After a successful test, keep only the changes that were necessary. If granting notification permission and enabling the correct channel fixed the alert, return the battery policy to its previous state. If an unrestricted policy was required, leave it on for that single app and monitor battery use for a day. Recheck the reminder after the phone enters its normal idle state, because an immediate test does not exercise Doze.
Google cautions that settings vary by phone. If a menu is missing, search Settings for notifications, Alarms & Reminders, battery, or Do Not Disturb. The labels may differ, but the underlying checks remain the same: the reminder needs a date and time, the correct app must be allowed to notify, its channel must alert, modes must permit it, and battery management must not defer its background work.
