An Android Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) is a scheduled update inside an existing Android version, not a completely new Android generation. Google describes QPRs as quarterly releases delivered to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and Google Pixel devices, where they can appear as Feature Drops. Depending on the release, a QPR may contain new user-facing features, platform changes, bug fixes, and performance improvements. Eligibility and timing depend on your exact phone, build, region, carrier, support window, and update channel.
The practical rule is simple: identify the Android version, QPR sequence, build number, device model, channel, and rollout date before deciding what an update means for you.

What is an Android QPR?
QPR stands for Quarterly Platform Release. It is a maintenance-and-feature release made during the life of a major Android version. Google’s Android Beta Program describes a cycle in which a major platform release is followed by three Quarterly Platform Releases. The releases are issued on a quarterly cadence, but “quarterly” describes the planned rhythm rather than a guarantee that every phone receives an update on the same calendar day.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA QPR keeps the underlying Android generation in place while changing selected parts of the platform. One release may mainly address defects and performance. Another may introduce a visible Feature Drop or alter platform behavior that affects apps, settings, or device management. The scope is release-specific, so the QPR notes for the exact build are more useful than the label alone.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
QPR versus a major Android version
| Characteristic | Major Android release | Quarterly Platform Release |
|---|---|---|
| Role in the cycle | Starts a new Android platform generation | Updates an existing Android generation |
| Typical content | Broad platform changes and new APIs or behavior | Feature-drop changes, release-specific fixes, performance work, and selected platform adjustments |
| Public sequence | The initial platform release | Three QPRs are described as following the major release in Google’s public beta sequence |
| Testing path | May have its own developer and beta milestones | Google publishes QPR beta images for developers to test before public availability |
| Delivery | Depends on device support and manufacturer rollout | Also depends on device support, manufacturer and carrier adaptation, channel, region, and staging |
Calling a QPR “just a security update” is too narrow, while calling it a new Android version is inaccurate. Read the release notes to see whether your build contains a Feature Drop, a platform adjustment, fixes, performance improvements, or a combination.
What does a Quarterly Platform Release include?
There is no fixed feature checklist shared by every QPR. Google’s official notes list the changes and fixes for each release. The same notes also identify beta images intended for developer testing. In practice, a QPR can affect four broad areas.
Feature-drop changes
Some QPRs carry user-visible additions that Google groups with a Feature Drop. These can change system experiences or add capabilities without requiring a new Android generation. The existence, size, and availability of a feature can vary by device and market; do not assume that a feature shown in a Pixel announcement appears on every Android phone.
Bug fixes
QPR notes list release-specific defects that have been corrected. A fix may address a system component, connectivity behavior, a user-interface problem, or another identified issue. The notes are the authoritative way to determine whether a problem you are seeing is included.
Performance improvements
Google’s beta description explicitly includes performance improvements among the possible QPR contents. “Performance” is not a promise of a particular speed increase or battery-life percentage. It means the release may refine system behavior; results depend on the device, workload, apps, and configuration.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Platform adjustments and compatibility effects
A QPR can adjust platform behavior even when the change is not a headline feature. For developers and IT teams, these changes matter because an app, managed configuration, or device policy can behave differently on the new build. Check the release notes and test the exact build rather than relying on the Android version number alone.
How QPRs are delivered
QPR availability depends on the channel through which you receive it. The same release can appear at different times, or not at all, for different users.

| Delivery path | What it means | Who should use it |
|---|---|---|
| Stable over-the-air update | The public build is offered through the device’s normal update mechanism, often in a staged rollout | Most users who want the supported public release |
| Beta enrollment | A pre-release QPR build supplied through the Android Beta Program for supported devices | Users willing to accept pre-release behavior and developers testing compatibility |
| Manual developer image | A downloadable image used to install a specific test build | Developers and advanced testers who can follow the device-specific installation and recovery process |
| Manufacturer or carrier rollout | An OEM or carrier adapts, approves, and distributes the platform update | Owners of non-Pixel phones, subject to that company’s schedule and requirements |
A staged rollout means an update may be offered to some eligible devices before others. Seeing no update on the first day does not by itself mean your phone is unsupported.
Which phones get Android QPR updates?
Google Pixel devices
Pixel devices are the clearest QPR target because Google publishes QPR builds and beta images for supported Pixel models. Participation in a Pixel QPR beta requires a supported device and the enrollment or installation path specified by Google. Stable availability still depends on the model’s support status and the rollout channel.
Google publishes model-specific Pixel support windows. A Pixel that has passed its support period should not be promised future Android platform updates, including later QPRs. Check the support information for your exact model instead of inferring eligibility from the fact that it can run an earlier Android version.

Non-Pixel Android phones
Other Android phones do not receive a QPR automatically merely because they use the same Android version. The manufacturer must adapt the platform to its software, hardware, and testing process, and a carrier may need to approve or distribute the result. Availability can vary by country, carrier, sales channel, and staged deployment.

A statement that “Android version X has a QPR” does not establish that every phone running version X will receive it.
Why two identical models may update at different times
- Region: regulatory, localization, or product-channel differences can change the rollout.
- Carrier: a carrier-branded build may require additional approval.
- Build channel: beta and stable releases follow different paths.
- Staging: an eligible update can be enabled gradually rather than offered to every device simultaneously.
- Support window: a model near or beyond its published support period may not qualify for a future platform release.
How to find out whether your phone will get the next QPR
There is no universal recipient list or global percentage for QPR updates. Determine eligibility from the device and rollout information that applies to you.
- Record the exact device. Write down the model name and variant, not just the product family. Regional and carrier variants can follow different schedules.
- Record the current build. In Android settings, open the device information or software information page and note the Android version and build number. Menu labels vary by manufacturer.
- Identify the channel. Determine whether the phone is on a stable public build, enrolled in a beta program, or using a manually installed developer image.
- Check the support window. Confirm that the model remains eligible for platform updates in the manufacturer’s published support information. For Pixel phones, use Google’s model-specific support window.
- Read the matching release notes. Match the Android version, QPR sequence, build, and release date. Do not use notes for a different model or channel as proof of availability.
- Check the rollout status on the phone. Use the system-update screen and the manufacturer or carrier notice. If the rollout is staged, wait for the update to be enabled for your device.
If the exact model is supported but the update is not visible, the most likely explanations are staging, regional or carrier approval, a channel mismatch, or a build that has not yet been adapted by the manufacturer. Avoid forcing an installation intended for another model or region.
What developers and IT teams should do before deploying a QPR
QPR testing is not limited to people who want new features. Google provides QPR beta images specifically so developers can check behavior ahead of the public release schedule.

Build a test matrix
- Test the exact QPR beta or stable build, including its build number.
- Include the device model, screen configuration, language, region, and managed or unmanaged state relevant to your users.
- Exercise critical app flows, background work, notifications, permissions, storage, connectivity, and account sign-in.
- Record regressions separately from expected platform changes documented in the release notes.
Validate managed configurations
Organizations should test device policies, enrollment, compliance checks, work profiles, certificates, VPN settings, and any automation that depends on system behavior. A QPR platform adjustment can expose assumptions that were harmless on the previous build. Validate both newly provisioned devices and upgrades of already-managed devices.
Plan the rollout and rollback
Start with a small group, monitor failures, and expand only after critical workflows pass. Keep a documented recovery plan for the tested channel. Beta and developer images can have different recovery or rollback requirements from stable over-the-air updates, so follow the instructions for that exact image and device rather than applying a generic procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read QPR release notes
Release notes are most useful when read as a build-specific change record.
- Confirm the release identity: Android version, QPR sequence, build identifier, channel, and publication date.
- Separate feature changes from fixes: a Feature Drop item describes a user-facing addition, while a fix addresses an identified problem.
- Look for device scope: a note may apply to Pixel devices, a subset of models, or a particular beta image.
- Check compatibility implications: platform behavior changes can require app or policy testing even when the change is not visible to users.
- Compare with your current build: only changes after your installed build are relevant to your upgrade decision.
Do not treat a QPR label as a guarantee that every listed change reaches every Android phone. The release notes describe the platform release; the manufacturer and carrier determine how, when, and whether it is delivered on a particular device.

Confusing a beta with the public QPR
A beta image is a test channel. It may contain unfinished behavior and can require enrollment or manual installation. A stable QPR is the public release path; the two should not be treated as interchangeable.
Using the Android version alone
Two devices can report the same Android version while running different builds, feature sets, or manufacturer adaptations. Always capture the build number and channel.
Ignoring the support end date
A phone outside its published platform-support window should not be expected to receive a future QPR, even if similar models do.
Installing an image for the wrong device
Developer images and manual packages are device-specific. Verify the model and installation instructions before changing software, and maintain a recovery plan.
When will the next QPR arrive?
QPRs follow a quarterly cadence, but there is no single worldwide delivery date for every Android phone. Google may publish a release for AOSP and supported Pixel devices while manufacturers and carriers continue adaptation and approval for other models. Country, channel, and staged rollout decisions can move the offer date again.
For the most accurate answer, track the release notes and update notice that match your device, region, build, and channel. A quarterly schedule tells you the expected place in the Android cycle; it does not promise a particular day or universal availability.
