There is no single Android switch that makes a phone private. A sound setup is to review which apps have accessed sensitive data, grant each app only the access its feature needs, use approximate or while-in-use options when they are sufficient, and revisit permissions when your apps or Android version change. The names and locations of these controls vary by manufacturer and Android release, so use the Settings search box if a path does not match your phone.
Start with an audit, not a blanket switch
Android’s privacy controls are separate because they govern different data flows. An app permission controls one app’s access to a data type; a Quick Settings sensor tile can block camera or microphone access for the whole device; ad-privacy controls govern specific advertising features rather than every advert you might see. Reviewing activity first helps you avoid breaking a feature you actually use.

Find the Privacy Dashboard
- Open Settings and search for Privacy dashboard. On many phones it is under Privacy or Security & privacy.
- Select a permission category such as location, camera or microphone to see which apps accessed it and when.
- Tap an app in the activity list to open its permission controls, then change the permission if its access is unexpected or no longer justified.
Google documents a rolling history of the previous 24 hours on Android 12 and the previous seven days on Android 13. Those windows are version-specific; check your phone rather than assuming the same history period on every release. The dashboard is an audit and a route to a setting, not a complete record of every piece of data an app may process. See Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions.

Permission Manager groups apps by the information or hardware they can use. Categories commonly include camera, microphone, contacts, location, photos and videos, nearby devices, notifications, phone and SMS. Search Settings for Permission Manager, or open Settings > Privacy > Permission Manager where that path exists. If you already know the app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions instead. Labels and category names differ across manufacturers.

A practical choice for each permission
| Option | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Allow all the time | A feature genuinely needs background access, such as a location-sharing function you deliberately keep running. | The app can access that data outside the moments when you are looking at it. |
| Allow only while using the app | The feature works when its screen is open, such as an in-app map or camera. | Background updates or alerts that require continuous access may stop. |
| Ask every time | You use the feature occasionally and can handle a prompt each time. Availability depends on the permission, app and Android version. | Repeated prompts can become inconvenient; declining a prompt prevents that operation. |
| Deny | The app has no credible reason to use the data, or you do not use the related feature. | The feature depending on that permission will not work until access is restored. |
Keep a permission only when it supports a function you actually use. Prefer foreground access over background access when both work. For an app installed once and forgotten, retain Android’s unused-app protection if your device offers it: Android can pause an unused app and remove its permissions automatically. Google explains these choices in its Android app-permission guide.
When an app stops working
- If a document scanner cannot capture an image, restore its camera permission temporarily.
- If voice input or a recording feature fails, check microphone permission and the global microphone control.
- If a navigation or delivery feature cannot find you, review both its location permission and the device Location setting.
- After testing, return to the narrowest setting that still performs the job; do not leave a broad permission enabled merely because an app once requested it.
Location: four decisions that are easy to confuse
Location privacy has separate dimensions: whether an app can access your location, how long it can access it, how precise the result is, and how the device calculates that result. Treat them as independent choices.
Choose an app’s duration
For an individual app, the available choices can include Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Deny. Some versions use wording such as Allow when sharing. A navigation app that must guide you while the screen is locked may need background access; a weather app generally can work with foreground or occasional access. Deny location to an app whose purpose does not require it.

Choose approximate or precise
On Android 12 and later, an app can receive an approximate area or your precise location. Google describes approximate location as an area of about 3 square kilometers, while precise location represents the device’s exact location. If a local-events, shopping or weather feature works with an area, turn off its precise-location switch and leave approximate location enabled. Reserve precise access for functions such as turn-by-turn navigation or a location-sharing feature you intentionally use.
Do not confuse app precision with Location Accuracy
Location Accuracy is a device-level setting. When enabled, Android can combine signals such as GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular networks and device sensors to improve its location estimate. An app’s Use precise location permission is a separate control. You can allow an app only approximate location while leaving Location Accuracy enabled for other device functions, or change both independently. Google documents the distinction in its app-location instructions and its device-location guide.
What turning off device location does not do
Disabling the device Location setting prevents normal location services from providing a device location, but it does not make all location inference impossible. Google notes that local results and ads can still be based on your IP address. That is why app permission, device location and network-based inference should not be treated as one master switch.

Camera and microphone: visibility plus a hard stop
On Android 12 and later, the system shows a green indicator when an app uses the camera or microphone. Google’s Android Help states: “When apps use your camera or mic, a green indicator will show in the top right corner of your screen.” Tap the indicator to identify the app or service; from there you can manage its permissions. Details are in Google’s camera and microphone indicator guide.
Use Quick Settings for a device-wide block
- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open the full Quick Settings panel.
- Look for Camera and Microphone access tiles. If they are not visible, edit the tiles and add them when your phone provides them.
- Tap a tile to disable that sensor for all apps and services, then tap it again when you need the hardware.
This is stronger than revoking permission from one app, but it is also broader. Video calls, camera scanning, recording, voice input and accessibility features that depend on a sensor can fail while the global block is active. If a sensor-dependent feature suddenly stops, check these tiles before reinstalling the app or changing several permissions.
A sensible default
Deny camera or microphone access to apps with no clear reason to use them. Grant access when you invoke the relevant feature, and remove it afterward if the app does not need it regularly. Keep the global tiles available as a temporary block when you want every app and service prevented from using that sensor.

Android ad privacy: three limited opt-outs
Android’s ad-privacy menu may contain Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement. Search Settings for Ads or Ad privacy; the exact path and availability can vary as features roll out.
| Control | What it does | What switching it off means |
|---|---|---|
| Ad topics | Android may infer topics of interest from app use, and participating apps can request those topics for advertising. | You can turn the feature off or remove individual topics. Ads may still relate to removed topics through other signals. |
| App-suggested ads | Participating apps can recommend and store ad suggestions on the device. | You can block an app from suggesting ads. This does not stop that app or other apps from showing every kind of advert. |
| Ad measurement | Limited data can be shared to help measure advertising performance. | Turning it off prevents this Android feature from contributing its measurement signals, but it does not govern every measurement method used by apps or services. |
Set these features off if you do not want to participate in those particular Android ad systems, but do not expect an ad-free phone. Google says ads can remain and may still be personalized through advertising ID settings, other device signals or an app’s own policy. Availability also depends on the Android release, country and whether an app uses the feature. Read Google’s ad-privacy explanation before interpreting the switches as a universal advertising opt-out.
Other privacy controls you may see
Pixel’s privacy overview lists controls such as lock-screen notification visibility, clipboard-access notices, autofill, activity controls, Location History, ads and usage diagnostics. These settings do not all protect the same kind of information:
Best Value
- Lock-screen notifications: hiding sensitive content reduces what someone can read without unlocking the phone, but you may lose useful previews.
- Clipboard notices: alerts help you notice an app reading copied text; they do not prevent copying or pasting.
- Autofill: saves typing and can expose saved addresses or credentials to an approved autofill service; choose the service you trust and review saved entries.
- Activity controls and Location History: govern particular account or history records, not every location signal generated by the device.
- Usage diagnostics: optional diagnostic sharing can help improve products; disabling it does not erase data an app needs to function.
That list is documented for Pixel and should not be presented as a universal menu for every Android phone. Manufacturer software can rename, relocate or omit controls. Google’s Pixel-specific overview is at Manage security and privacy settings on your Pixel phone.
A repeatable privacy review for any Android phone
- Identify the software context. Check Android version and manufacturer, because history periods, labels and available choices depend on them.
- Review recent access. Open Privacy Dashboard and investigate camera, microphone, location and other sensitive categories.
- Correct individual apps. In Permission Manager or an app’s Permissions page, remove access that has no current feature need.
- Reduce duration. Replace background access with while-in-use or ask-every-time access when the feature still works.
- Reduce precision. For location, switch off precise access when approximate location is adequate.
- Check device-wide sensor state. Confirm Camera and Microphone Quick Settings tiles are enabled when a trusted feature needs them, and disabled when you want a hard block.
- Review ad-privacy participation. Decide separately about Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement; record what each switch actually changes.
- Recheck after updates. Android updates, app redesigns and new features can introduce a legitimate permission need or change a menu label.
Use Settings search whenever a cited path is missing. If an app’s request still seems disproportionate, deny it, test the app’s core function, and restore only the specific permission required for that function. Privacy is maintained by these periodic, narrow decisions rather than by enabling or disabling an entire screen once.
