To get a Starlink connection working, use the Starlink app to check for obstructions, place the dish with the sky view recommended for your kit, connect the dish and router to power, wait for the dish to orient and establish service, then join the default Wi-Fi network and create your own network name and password. The exact cable layout and Ethernet options depend on the Starlink dish and router generation, so identify the labels on your hardware before adding adapters, mesh equipment or another router.
What you need before starting
Gather the Starlink dish, its matching router and cables, a power outlet, a phone or tablet with the Starlink app, and the mount or base supplied for your kit. Keep the equipment together while you plan the location; cable lengths, connector types and mounting hardware vary among Starlink generations.

- A clear installation site: the dish needs an unobstructed view of the sky. Trees, branches, poles, rooflines and other objects can interrupt the satellite link.
- The Starlink app: use it to run Check for Obstructions, complete network setup and inspect connection status.
- A safe mounting plan: a ground-level base may work when the sky view is open. Otherwise, use a mount compatible with your exact dish and the roof, pole or wall surface.
- Your router model: port availability differs between Gen 2, Router 3 and Router Mini.
The procedure below uses the Standard Actuated kit as the concrete example because its official guide documents the automatic leveling and tilting sequence. Do not assume that its cable arrangement or movement applies to every Starlink model; follow the setup guide for the label on your equipment.
1. Choose a location with an unobstructed sky view
Run the obstruction check first
- Install or open the Starlink app on your phone or tablet.
- Open the location or setup tools and select Check for Obstructions.
- Hold the phone where the dish will sit and follow the on-screen scan. Check the view from the actual planned position, not from a nearby open area.
- If the app identifies objects in the dish’s view, test a different position before permanently mounting anything.
Starlink describes the requirement plainly: the dish needs a clear view of the sky so it can stay connected with satellites as they move overhead. Even a site that looks open from the ground can be blocked by a roof edge, chimney, tree canopy or utility pole at the dish’s elevation.

Decide whether the base is enough
Start with the supplied base on stable ground when the obstruction scan is clear. The Standard Actuated instructions advise installing the dish as close to vertical as possible. If the ground-level scan is blocked, an elevated roof, pole or wall position may provide a better view. Select a mount designed for your dish model and the material you are attaching it to; a mount that fits one generation may not fit another.
Do not climb, drill or place the dish where a fall, electrical contact or structural failure is possible. If you cannot create a safe installation, use a qualified installer rather than improvising a mount.
2. Place and power the dish
Standard Actuated setup sequence
For the Standard Actuated kit, connect the dish and router using the cables supplied with that kit, connect the router to power, and place the dish in its base or selected compatible mount. Keep connectors fully seated and route the cable so it is not sharply bent, pinched by a door or exposed to avoidable strain.

- ⚠️ COMPATIBILITY WARNING: Designed EXCLUSIVELY for Starlink Standard Actuated Gen 2. ❌NOT COMPATIBLE with Starlink Gen 3, Flat High-Performance, or any other models. Please verify your dish model before purchase!
- PLUG & PLAY INSTALLATION: Simply connect the adapter between your Gen 2 Starlink router and the cable. No drivers or complex setup needed. Ensure a firm click on both ends for a stable connection.
- ENABLE HARDWIRED SPEEDS & STABILITY: Unlock the full potential of your Starlink by connecting gaming consoles, PCs, and smart TVs directly via Ethernet for lower latency and smoother streaming.
- RELIABLE DATA TRANSFER: Experience lag-free online gaming, 4K video conferencing, and ultra-fast file transfers with a stable, wired internet backbone.
- TROUBLESHOOTING TIP: If not working, first check both connections are secure and restart your Starlink router.
At first power-on, the Standard Actuated dish automatically levels itself, makes an initial connection after a few minutes and then tilts to an optimum angle for its hemisphere. Leave it free to move. Do not push, twist or manually set the dish angle during this process. Other Starlink dishes may use a different movement or mounting method, so use their model-specific instructions instead of copying this sequence.
What to watch during startup
- Keep the dish and router powered while the initial orientation and connection take place.
- Make sure the cable ends remain firmly inserted at both the dish and router.
- Use the app to view setup status rather than judging success only by the dish’s physical position.
- If the dish cannot be installed safely in the chosen location, stop and relocate it or obtain professional help.
3. Connect a phone, computer or TV over Wi-Fi
Join the default network
- Open Wi-Fi settings on the phone, laptop, television or other device you want online.
- Select the network named
STARLINK. That is the default network name documented for the Standard Actuated setup. - Wait for the device to obtain a network connection, then open the Starlink app.
The default network is not password protected until you configure one. Treat the first connection as a setup step, not as a finished home network.
Set a private network name and password
- In the Starlink app, open Settings.
- Select Router.
- Enter the Wi-Fi network name you want household devices to see.
- Create a Wi-Fi password and save the changes.
- Reconnect each phone, computer, streaming box and smart-home device to the new network name using the new password.
The setup guide describes the password step as optional but recommends securing the network. A unique password prevents nearby people from joining the unprotected default network and gives you a clear name to use when adding devices later.

4. Connect a wired device or add Ethernet ports
First identify the router generation. Ethernet capability is not uniform across Starlink hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
| Hardware | Ethernet provision | What you need for a wired device |
|---|---|---|
| Gen 2 router | No built-in Ethernet ports | The Starlink Ethernet adapter, installed according to the adapter and router instructions |
| Router 3 | Two LAN ports beneath the back cover | An Ethernet cable from a LAN port to the computer, TV, console or switch |
| Router Mini | One latching LAN port | An Ethernet cable from that port to the wired device or a switch |
For Router 3, open the back cover to reach the two LAN ports. Router Mini has a single latching LAN connection. A Gen 2 owner should not buy a generic cable and expect it to work directly with the router: the documented path requires the Starlink Ethernet adapter.
If one port is not enough, connect a compatible network switch to an available LAN port, then connect additional wired devices to the switch. A switch expands the number of local Ethernet connections; it does not replace the Starlink router or create a second internet service.

5. Use a third-party router or mesh system
A separate router or mesh system is optional. It can make sense when you need a particular Wi-Fi layout, more advanced local-network controls or broader coverage than the supplied router provides. It is not required for ordinary phones, computers and televisions.
Typical connection path
- Identify whether your Starlink router has a usable Ethernet port. Gen 2 requires the Starlink Ethernet adapter before this connection is possible.
- Connect the third-party router’s Internet/WAN port to the Starlink router’s Ethernet connection.
- Open the Starlink app and enable Bypass Mode when the third-party router is intended to perform routing and Wi-Fi duties.
- Configure the new router’s Wi-Fi name, password and any mesh nodes using that router’s instructions.
Starlink says compatibility and performance with third-party routers are not guaranteed, and some Starlink app features may not work as expected. Bypass Mode is therefore an advanced configuration, not a prerequisite for getting online.
Before enabling bypass mode
- Record the current Starlink Wi-Fi settings and make sure you know how to access the third-party router’s administration page.
- Confirm that the third-party unit is configured to receive an Internet connection on its WAN port.
- Plan how you will recover if the new router does not connect or a Starlink feature disappears.
The Gen 3 setup guidance notes that exiting bypass mode requires a manual factory reset. Do not enable it casually if you cannot reach the router or reset it at the installation site; a reset can erase your custom router settings.

6. Add mesh coverage without losing track of the network
Mesh equipment is useful when one router cannot cover the rooms where you use devices. Decide first whether you want Starlink’s own compatible mesh path or a separate mesh system behind a third-party router. The choice affects cabling, management and whether bypass mode is involved.
- Keep the Starlink router as the main router: follow the supported mesh procedure for your Starlink hardware and manage the resulting network through the available Starlink controls.
- Use a separate mesh router: connect it through Ethernet and configure it as the routing system; bypass mode may be required, with the compatibility and app-feature limitations described above.
Place mesh nodes where they still receive a strong connection from the main node, not in the room where the signal has already disappeared. Exact pairing steps depend on the mesh model and are not universal across Starlink generations.
7. Troubleshoot interruptions and failed setup
The app reports obstructions or service keeps dropping
- Run Check for Obstructions again from the dish’s current position.
- Move the dish to a clearer location if possible.
- If relocation is not enough, raise it with a mount designed for the dish and installation surface, or have a professional evaluate the site.
- After moving the dish, unplug and reboot the system so it can repeat its orientation and connection process.
Do not trim branches, drill into an unstable surface or place the dish near electrical hazards merely to improve the scan. A safe, slightly different location is preferable to an unsafe permanent installation.

No device can see the STARLINK network
- Confirm the router has power and that the cable from the dish is fully seated.
- Stand near the router and refresh the device’s Wi-Fi list.
- Check that you are looking for the exact default name,
STARLINK, before you change the network settings. - Use the Starlink app to inspect router status. If you already changed the network name, connect to that new name instead.
Wi-Fi works but a wired device does not
- Check the router generation before troubleshooting the cable. Gen 2 has no built-in Ethernet port and needs the Starlink Ethernet adapter.
- On Router 3, verify that the cable is connected to one of the two LAN ports beneath the back cover.
- On Router Mini, use its single latching LAN port and confirm the plug is locked in place.
- Test the cable with another known-good device or connect a switch only after the direct connection works.
The third-party router loses access or Starlink controls are missing
Check the Ethernet path and the third-party router’s WAN configuration first. If the problem began immediately after enabling bypass mode, remember that Starlink warns that app features may not work as expected in this arrangement. If you need to return to the original setup, follow the model’s manual factory-reset procedure; the Gen 3 guidance specifically requires a manual reset to exit bypass mode.
Choosing the right accessory or network path
| Your goal | Likely path | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Put the dish where the ground view is blocked | Compatible roof, pole or wall mount | Confirm dish model, mounting surface and safe installation method |
| Connect one wired TV or computer | Router 3 or Router Mini LAN port; Gen 2 Ethernet adapter | Identify the router generation before buying anything |
| Add several wired devices | LAN port plus a network switch | Use an available LAN connection and appropriate Ethernet cabling |
| Improve coverage in distant rooms | Compatible mesh arrangement or separate mesh router | Decide whether Starlink remains the main router or bypass mode is used |
| Replace the supplied Wi-Fi system | Third-party router connected behind Starlink | Compatibility, performance and some app features are not guaranteed |
Do not assume an Ethernet adapter, mount or mesh node is needed before identifying the actual problem. A clear sky view and a correctly powered, model-matched setup come before network expansion.
After setup: a practical connection checklist
- The dish location passed the app’s obstruction check.
- The dish is secured in its base or a mount compatible with its model and surface.
- The dish completed its automatic orientation sequence where that behavior applies.
- Your device joined the default
STARLINKnetwork or the custom name you created. - A private Wi-Fi password is enabled.
- Every wired device uses the correct port or, for Gen 2, the required Ethernet adapter.
- Any third-party router or mesh system is connected and configured with a recovery plan.
Key model differences to keep in mind
The Standard Actuated instructions are a useful worked example, not a universal wiring diagram. Starlink has multiple hardware generations and kits. Dish movement, router ports, adapters and reset procedures can differ. Read the guide that matches the labels on your dish and router whenever a cable, mount or app option does not match the steps here.
