Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Steam Link is the better choice for most people who already own a capable Windows PC. The PC runs the game and streams video and audio to your Android device, so compatibility is usually predictable and setup is relatively simple. Android PC emulation with Winlator is better when you want local, potentially offline play without a running host PC and your phone or handheld has suitable ARM64 Snapdragon hardware. It is more portable, but every game depends on translation layers, drivers and game-specific configuration.
The short answer
Choose Steam Link if your games are in Steam, your computer can run them, and you have a reliable connection between the computer and Android device. Choose Winlator if you need the game to run locally on Android, are willing to transfer legally obtained Windows game files, and have hardware with strong Vulkan support.

| Question | Steam Link | Android PC emulation with Winlator |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On a Windows, macOS or Linux computer running Steam; Android receives the stream. | On the Android device through Wine and Box86/Box64 translation. |
| Is a PC required? | Yes. The host computer must be powered on, running Steam and reachable over the network. | No host PC is required after compatible game files and the container are installed. |
| Does it work offline? | No. The Android device must maintain a connection to the host PC. | Potentially yes, after local installation; this follows from the local execution model, although some games still require online services. |
| Library convenience | High for games already installed in the host Steam library. | Lower. You must provide compatible installers or game files and configure titles individually. |
| Compatibility | Usually close to the host PC’s normal Windows compatibility. | Varies with the Android chip, Vulkan driver, translation layers and the individual game. |
| Setup effort | Install the app, pair it with the host and configure controls. | Install Winlator, create and tune containers, transfer files and adjust settings per game. |
| Primary weakness | Network latency, bandwidth and dependence on the host computer. | Crashes, missing features, driver limitations and inconsistent frame rates. |
There is no universal frame-rate, latency or “percentage of games working” figure that fairly represents either method. Results depend on the specific game, Android hardware, host computer and network.
What Steam Link actually does
Steam Link is Valve’s Android app for remotely playing games from a computer running Steam. Valve describes the process this way: “Video and audio data is sent from your computer, while your controller input is sent back in real time.” The important consequence is that Android is not rendering the Windows game. The host computer performs the game simulation and graphics work, encodes the output and sends a live stream to the phone, tablet or Android TV.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Because the host runs the normal PC version, the Android device does not need to emulate x86 Windows instructions or provide a compatible DirectX implementation. A demanding game can therefore be playable on an inexpensive Android screen if the computer can run it and the network can carry the stream with acceptable delay.
What you need
- A computer with Steam installed and the game installed or otherwise available in its Steam library.
- A supported Android phone, tablet or TV device.
- A network connection linking Android to the host computer. Valve recommends a 5GHz wireless router.
- A controller or usable touch controls. Valve lists the Razer Kishi, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9 or newer and Razer Raiju Mobile among supported inputs.
The host computer does not have to be physically next to you, but it must remain powered on, signed in as needed and connected to the network. Playing away from home introduces additional router, upload-bandwidth and internet-latency requirements that are not present when both devices are on the same home network.
Setting up Steam Link on Android
- Prepare the host. Install Steam on the computer, sign in to the account that owns the game and leave Steam running. Install updates and confirm that the game launches normally at the computer.
- Improve the network first. Connect the computer to the router with Ethernet when possible. Put the Android device on the router’s 5GHz Wi-Fi network rather than a congested 2.4GHz network.
- Install Steam Link. Get Valve’s Steam Link app from the official Android app store and open it.
- Pair with the computer. The app searches for computers running Steam. Select the host, enter the displayed pairing code on the computer and allow the connection.
- Run the network test. Steam Link reports whether the connection is suitable. Treat this as a starting point rather than a guarantee: interference, other traffic and distance can change performance during play.
- Connect the controller. Pair a Bluetooth or USB controller with Android before launching the game. Map any missing buttons in Steam’s controller settings.
- Launch from the Steam Link interface. Select the game from the host library. The computer renders it while Android displays the stream and returns your inputs.
What good Steam Link performance feels like
A strong local connection can make the stream feel close to a console session, but it can never remove the encode, network and decode steps. Fast action games expose delay more readily than turn-based strategy or slower role-playing games. If the picture becomes blocky, the image freezes or controls feel delayed, lower the stream resolution or bandwidth target before blaming the game itself.
Steam Link troubleshooting
- Stuttering or dropped frames: Move the Android device closer to the 5GHz access point, reduce competing traffic and use Ethernet for the host.
- High input delay: Check whether the host is overloaded, disable unnecessary video-quality enhancements and avoid routing the stream through a distant access point.
- Black screen or failed launch: Confirm that the game starts locally on the host, that the correct Steam account is signed in and that the host display driver is functioning.
- Controller not detected: Pair the controller with Android before opening the stream, then inspect Steam’s controller layout for the game.
- Connection works at home but not elsewhere: Remote play over the internet depends on the host’s upload capacity, router configuration and the latency of both internet connections.
What Android PC emulation with Winlator does
Winlator is an Android application that runs Windows x86_64 applications through Wine and Box86/Box64. Rather than receiving a finished video stream, the Android device executes the Windows program locally through compatibility and CPU-instruction translation layers.

Winlator’s current guidance highlights DirectX 9–12 support through DXVK and VKD3D, gamepad support, resolution scaling and optimization for Snapdragon Adreno graphics. These features make some older or less demanding PC games practical on a phone or gaming handheld, but they do not turn Android into a universal Windows computer. Each title can depend on a different graphics API, launcher, copy-protection system, audio path or input method.
Practical hardware requirements
- Android 9 or newer.
- An ARM64 processor.
- Vulkan 1.1 or newer support from the device’s graphics driver.
- About 6GB of RAM as a practical target for 3D games.
- A Snapdragon processor with Adreno graphics is the most favorable configuration according to Winlator’s guidance.
MediaTek and Exynos devices can work in some cases, but Winlator warns of compatibility problems. The processor name alone is not enough: Vulkan driver quality, available memory, thermal behavior and the particular game all influence the result. A powerful chip with an unsuitable or unstable driver can perform worse than a slower device with a better-supported graphics stack.
Installing and preparing a game in Winlator
Winlator is intended for software you are entitled to use. Its February 8, 2025 guidance describes transferring legally obtained game files, such as GOG backups or free demos. It does not provide a normal integrated Steam-library workflow.
- Check the device. Verify Android version, ARM64 support, Vulkan capability and available storage. Leave thermal headroom; sustained emulation can make a thin phone throttle.
- Obtain legitimate files. Copy an installer or an already installed game directory from a source that grants you the right to use it. Do not treat Winlator as a way to bypass ownership checks or copy protection.
- Install Winlator from its official distribution. Keep the application and any required components aligned with the version documented by the project.
- Create a container. A container is the isolated Windows-like environment in which the game runs. Choose a Windows version profile and graphics settings appropriate to the title rather than assuming one profile fits every game.
- Transfer the files. Use Android storage that Winlator can access, and avoid placing large game folders in a location that Android’s permission system will later block.
- Install or launch the game. Run the legitimate installer inside the container, or create a shortcut to the executable if the game is already installed.
- Select the graphics translation path. DXVK is used for many DirectX 9–11 games, while VKD3D targets DirectX 12. The best choice depends on what the game actually uses and on the device’s Vulkan driver.
- Configure controls and resolution. Map a physical gamepad, set a resolution the device can sustain and enable resolution scaling when available.
- Test before tuning. Launch the game, observe frame pacing and temperature, then change one setting at a time. Record a working configuration so an update does not force you to rediscover it.
Why one Winlator game can work while another fails
Windows games are not interchangeable workloads. A DirectX 9 title may run acceptably through one translation path while a DirectX 12 title exposes a Vulkan-driver limitation. A game can also fail because of a launcher, anti-cheat component, installer dependency, video codec, 32-bit requirement or an assumption about Windows input devices. “Runs on Winlator” therefore means that a particular combination of device, container and game version has worked, not that every release in the series is supported.

Steam Link versus Winlator by decision factor
Portability and offline use
Winlator has the advantage when you are travelling with only the Android device and have prepared the files beforehand. The game executes locally, so there is no host PC to wake and no stream to carry across Wi-Fi. Online features may still require an internet connection, and storage can become a serious constraint because the complete game is on the Android device.
Steam Link is portable only when the host computer and network remain available. It is excellent for playing around the home, but the Android device alone is not enough.
Compatibility and reliability
Steam Link inherits the host computer’s normal Windows support. If the game launches correctly on that PC, the Android side mainly needs to decode the stream and transmit controls. Winlator adds several compatibility layers, so success depends on the Android architecture, Vulkan implementation, translation layer and title-specific behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImage quality and performance
With Steam Link, the host computer determines the game’s rendering performance and Android determines how smoothly it decodes the stream. Network conditions can reduce image quality or add delay even when the PC is powerful.

- [Quality Service] If you find any damage or other issues with the product upon receipt, please contact us immediately. We will handle it quickly
With Winlator, there is no stream-compression step, but the phone must perform the game workload and translation locally. Performance can vary sharply between scenes, and sustained heat may reduce clock speeds. Neither method has a universal performance advantage across all games.
Library management
Steam Link presents a familiar library and lets you launch supported games from the host. Winlator requires file management, container selection, shortcut creation and often separate settings for each game. Steam is not supported by Winlator as a normal integrated-library workflow according to the project’s February 8, 2025 guidance.
Controls
A physical controller is strongly preferable for most Windows games. A telescopic Android controller can serve both approaches: Steam Link sends its button presses back to the PC, while Winlator maps them inside the container. Touch controls may be adequate for menus or slower genres but are a poor substitute for analog sticks, triggers and a full button layout in action games.

| Your situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You already own a gaming PC and Steam games. | Steam Link | The PC supplies Windows compatibility and the library is immediately available. |
| You want to play during travel without carrying or powering a PC. | Winlator | Games can run from local files after setup, subject to title compatibility. |
| Your Android device uses a Snapdragon processor and Adreno GPU with Vulkan support. | Winlator is worth testing | This is the hardware category Winlator’s guidance favors. |
| Your phone uses MediaTek or Exynos graphics. | Steam Link, if a host PC is available | Winlator’s own guidance warns that compatibility problems are more likely. |
| You need the least configuration work. | Steam Link | Pairing and network setup are simpler than per-game emulation tuning. |
| You have unreliable Wi-Fi but a capable Android handheld. | Winlator | Local execution avoids stream interruptions, though game compatibility must be checked. |
| You want to play a competitive, latency-sensitive game. | Usually the method with the shorter measured input path | Steam Link adds network delay; Winlator may have lower transport latency but can suffer from local frame-time spikes. Test the specific title. |
Do you need a gaming PC for Steam Link?
You need a computer that can run the Windows game and Steam. Steam Link does not replace that computer or move its rendering workload to Android. A very low-powered host may stream a simple game acceptably, while a demanding modern title still requires appropriate PC hardware. The Android phone’s graphics capability is less important than its ability to decode the stream and maintain the connection.

Can Winlator run a Steam library?
Not as a straightforward, supported library mirror. Winlator’s February 8, 2025 guide describes transferring legally obtained installers or game files, including GOG backups and free demos, rather than signing into Steam and browsing the library as you would on a PC. Some users may manually run files associated with a game they own, but that is a game-by-game compatibility exercise and is not equivalent to Steam Link’s integrated workflow.
How to choose an Android device for emulation
Prioritize the characteristics that affect translation and sustained load rather than choosing by brand alone:
- ARM64 CPU: Required by Winlator’s practical guidance.
- Snapdragon and Adreno graphics: The most favorable target for current Winlator optimization.
- Vulkan 1.1 or newer: Necessary for the highlighted DXVK and VKD3D graphics paths.
- At least about 6GB of RAM for 3D games: More memory can help avoid pressure from Android and the game running together, but it does not guarantee compatibility.
- Cooling and battery capacity: Long sessions can produce heat and drain the battery even when average frame rate initially looks acceptable.
- Physical controls: Built-in buttons or a compatible controller make PC control schemes practical.
- Fast, expandable storage where possible: Local PC games can occupy many gigabytes, and repeated installer transfers are inconvenient on a nearly full device.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting Steam Link to work when the host computer is asleep, shut down or disconnected.
- Using a weak or congested 2.4GHz connection and assuming the Android device is at fault.
- Assuming a high benchmark score guarantees Winlator compatibility.
- Installing game files without confirming that you have the legal right to use them.
- Changing several Winlator settings at once, making it impossible to identify which change helped or caused a crash.
- Judging a game after a short launch when thermal throttling appears only after sustained play.
- Attempting to play controller-focused games entirely with touch controls.
A practical recommendation
Start with Steam Link when a suitable host PC is already part of your setup. It is the lowest-friction route to a large Windows library because the computer handles compatibility and Android only handles the interactive stream. Improve the experience with a wired host connection, 5GHz Wi-Fi and a physical controller.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Winlator as the deliberate portability option. Confirm that your Android device has ARM64, Vulkan 1.1 or newer and preferably Snapdragon/Adreno graphics; then test one legally obtained, modestly demanding game before transferring a large library. Expect to maintain per-game containers and settings, and treat compatibility as a title-specific result rather than a promise about all Windows software.
