Android Parental Controls vs. iPhone Screen Time: What Parents Can Monitor and Restrict

Short answer: Android phones supervised with Google Family Link provide the broader remote-management toolkit: app-activity reports, daily and per-app limits, Downtime and School Time schedules, app approval or blocking, permission controls, Google-service filters, remote locking and location checks. iPhone Screen Time, managed through Family Sharing, is stronger when your priority is Apple-integrated approval: contacts for Phone, Messages and FaceTime, Ask to Buy, website approval, detailed content and privacy restrictions, and Communication Safety.

Neither system lets a parent see everything a child is doing. The controls depend on the child’s device, operating-system version, account setup, age and region. Family Link’s supervision is centered on a supervised Android or ChromeOS device; Screen Time is centered on Apple devices in a Family Sharing group.

Android Family Link and iPhone Screen Time at a glance

The table shows the practical difference between the platforms. “Not documented” means the cited Apple documentation does not describe that capability as a Screen Time control; it is not proof that no separate Apple feature exists.

Capability Android with Google Family Link iPhone with Screen Time and Family Sharing
Usage monitoring Parents can review how much time a child spends in apps on supervised devices. Parents can check a child’s activity from their own Apple device through Family Sharing.
Time management Daily limits, individual app limits, Downtime, School Time, unlimited-time exceptions and remote device lock. Schedules, weekday and weekend routines, category-based Time Allowances, pause controls and day-specific changes.
Apps and purchases Approve or block downloads, control purchases, change permissions and apply Google Play content ratings. Ask to Buy, app approval, allowed or blocked lists, app blocking and App Store restrictions.
Web and service filters Filters for Chrome, Search, YouTube and other Google services; Google warns that filtering is not perfect. Ask to Browse, Approved Websites Only, Limit Adult Websites and manual website blocking in supported browsers.
Location Location checks for a child’s Android phone or compatible Fitbit device when it is powered on and online. Location is not described as a Screen Time control in the Apple documentation reviewed here; use Apple’s separate location-sharing tools when needed.
Communication The documented controls emphasize account activity, apps, permissions and Google-service supervision rather than a detailed contact-approval workflow. Parents can approve contacts for Phone, Messages and FaceTime and require approval before a new person communicates.
Content and privacy Google Account settings, app permissions, Play ratings, SafeSearch, Chrome, YouTube and Search filters. Age ratings for apps, music, books, movies and TV, plus Siri, Game Center, privacy, purchases and related device settings.
Coverage boundary Many controls apply only to supervised Android or ChromeOS devices. Family Link controls do not extend universally to a child’s iOS activity or general web activity. Availability varies with device, operating-system version, child age, country or region; newer controls may require every Family Sharing device to be updated.

What parents can monitor and restrict on Android

Reviewing app activity

Family Link gives a parent an account-level view of how a child is spending time on a supervised Android device. The useful question it answers is “which apps are consuming the day?” rather than “what exactly did my child read or type?” The documented feature reports time spent in apps and lets the parent act on that information with limits or blocks.

Remote screen-time and app management require the Family Link app on the parent side. The child’s handset must be the supervised Android device associated with the child’s Google Account. A parent should therefore verify the account and device relationship before assuming a setting applies.

Daily limits, app limits and schedules

Family Link supports a whole-device daily limit and separate limits for individual apps. A parent can also create Downtime periods, when ordinary use is paused, and School Time schedules for recurring periods that need fewer distractions. Selected apps can be granted unlimited time, which is useful for a calling, accessibility or school app that should remain available while entertainment apps are restricted.

When a schedule needs to change immediately, the parent can remotely lock the supervised device. That is different from deleting an app or changing the child’s account: it is a temporary access control applied from the management app.

“Family Link lets you set daily time limits, with School Time and Downtime schedules for their devices.” — Google, Family Link product page.

Approving, blocking and governing apps

Family Link can require approval for downloads and purchases, block an installed app, and apply Google Play content ratings. It also exposes app permissions, so a parent can review or change what an app is allowed to access. These are separate decisions: approving an app does not mean granting every permission, and blocking an app does not by itself change the child’s other account settings.

Purchase supervision is tied to the Google Play and child-account arrangement. Confirm that the child is using the supervised account when testing an approval request; an unsupervised account can sit outside the policy.

Filtering Google services and the web

Family Link provides filters for Chrome, Google Search, YouTube and other Google services. These controls can reduce exposure to mature material and restrict some browsing paths, but Google explicitly says SafeSearch, Chrome website restrictions and Play Store filters are not perfect. Treat them as risk-reduction tools, not a guarantee that every unsuitable page or video will be identified.

The coverage boundary is important in mixed-device families. Google states that some Family Link features, including app management and filtering, do not apply to a child’s iOS activity or to general web activity outside the supervised environment. A child who moves from the supervised Android phone to an iPhone, another browser or another unsupervised device is no longer under the same set of controls.

Checking location

Family Link supports location checks for a child’s Android device and for a compatible Fitbit device. Two conditions are explicit: the device must be powered on and connected to the internet. A location that is old, missing or unavailable may therefore reflect a dead battery, airplane mode, no data connection or a device that has not recently reported, rather than a precise real-time position.

Android setup sequence

  1. Give the child a supervised Android phone and sign it in with the child’s Google Account; confirm that the parent account is the managing account.
  2. Install and sign in to the Family Link app on the parent’s device.
  3. Open the child’s profile and review the device, app-activity and account sections before setting restrictions.
  4. Set a daily limit, then add individual limits for high-use apps. Create Downtime and School Time schedules and mark any essential apps as unlimited if appropriate.
  5. Turn on approval for downloads and purchases, set Google Play content ratings and review app permissions.
  6. Configure Chrome, Search, YouTube and other available Google-service filters, then test them with a harmless known page or search.
  7. Enable location viewing and confirm that the child’s phone is powered on and online.
  8. Explain the rules to the child and test a limit, an app request and a remote lock while both devices are available.

What parents can monitor and restrict on iPhone

Activity reporting through Family Sharing

Screen Time is administered through Apple Family Sharing. A parent or guardian can check the child’s activity from the parent’s Apple device, then adjust limits and restrictions without taking the child’s phone. The activity view is a management signal: it shows how the device is being used, while the controls determine what can happen next.

Schedules and category allowances

Screen Time Schedules let a family define when the device may be used. Weekday and weekend routines can differ, and a parent can pause use or change the schedule for the current day. Category-based Time Allowances cover areas such as entertainment, games and social media, allowing a parent to manage a type of activity instead of entering every app one by one. Unlimited-use exceptions are available for apps that need to remain reachable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apps, websites and purchases

Ask to Buy handles eligible app downloads and purchases by sending a request to the parent. Parents can also use app approval, allowed or blocked lists, app blocking and App Store restrictions. This gives two layers of control: whether a child may obtain an app and whether an already-installed app may be used.

For browsing, Ask to Browse can require approval before a new website is opened. Approved Websites Only is the most restrictive listed mode, while Limit Adult Websites applies a broader filter. Parents can also manually allow or block particular apps and websites in supported browsers.

Communication and contact approval

Apple documents explicit contact controls for Phone, Messages and FaceTime. A parent can approve the people a child may contact and require approval before a new person communicates. This is the clearest platform difference for families whose main concern is who can reach the child, not only how long an app remains open.

Communication Safety is a separate protection layer. It can help protect children from viewing or sharing photos or videos with detected nudity, gore or violence in messages and FaceTime video calls. Detection is a safety aid, not a promise that every image or context will be classified correctly, so parents should still discuss what to do when a disturbing message arrives.

Content and privacy restrictions

Content & Privacy Restrictions cover age ratings for apps, music, books, movies and television. They also include Siri, Game Center, privacy settings, purchases and related device settings. These controls are useful when a parent wants to restrict a capability—such as changing privacy settings or making purchases—rather than merely reduce daily minutes.

iPhone setup sequence

  1. Create or verify the family group in Family Sharing and add the child’s Apple Account with the correct age information.
  2. On the parent’s Apple device, open the child’s Screen Time settings and confirm that activity reporting is enabled.
  3. Set a schedule for school nights and weekends, then add category-based Time Allowances and any unlimited-use exceptions.
  4. Configure Ask to Buy and app approval, then choose allowed or blocked apps and App Store restrictions.
  5. Choose Ask to Browse, Approved Websites Only or Limit Adult Websites, and add manual website rules where supported.
  6. Review Communication settings, approve contacts for Phone, Messages and FaceTime, and decide how new-contact requests should be handled.
  7. Turn on Communication Safety and explain its warnings and reporting path to the child.
  8. Open Content & Privacy Restrictions and set age ratings, purchase, privacy, Siri and Game Center rules.
  9. Test a harmless app request, website request, contact request and schedule change from the child’s phone before relying on the setup.

Which platform answers each parent question better?

“Can I see what my child is doing?”

Both platforms provide activity information rather than a live transcript of the child’s screen. Family Link reports app time on supervised Android devices. Screen Time reports activity through Family Sharing. Neither documented system should be described as silently showing every message, keystroke or page viewed.

“Can I block apps and websites?”

Yes, with different strengths. Family Link combines app blocking, Play approval, permissions and Google-service filters, but its web filters are explicitly imperfect and its coverage does not follow a child onto every device or the open web. Screen Time offers app blocking, Ask to Buy, website approval, Approved Websites Only, Limit Adult Websites and manual rules in supported browsers.

“Can I track location?”

Family Link documents location checks for an online, powered-on Android phone or compatible Fitbit. Screen Time documentation does not present location as a Screen Time control; families choosing an iPhone should use Apple’s separate location-sharing tools and configure them independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Can I approve who my child messages?”

iPhone Screen Time has the more explicit documented answer: contacts for Phone, Messages and FaceTime can require parental approval. The Google material described here does not detail an equivalent message-contact approval workflow at the same level.

Choosing between Android and iPhone

Start with the child’s handset and the parent’s devices. Family Link is the natural choice when the child will use a supervised Android phone and the parent needs remote location checks, School Time, per-app limits or remote locking. Screen Time is the natural choice when the household already uses Apple devices and needs contact approval, Ask to Buy, Communication Safety and Apple’s detailed content and privacy controls.

If your highest priority is… Better documented fit Why
Remote supervision and a device lock Android with Family Link Family Link combines app activity, schedules, per-app limits and remote locking in its supervised-device workflow.
Location checks for the child’s handset Android with Family Link Location is documented for an online, powered-on Android or compatible Fitbit device.
Approval of who can call or message iPhone with Screen Time Apple documents contact approval for Phone, Messages and FaceTime.
Purchase requests Either, depending on the family account Family Link supports Google Play download and purchase approval; Screen Time uses Ask to Buy for eligible Apple purchases.
Strict website allow-listing iPhone with Screen Time Approved Websites Only and Ask to Browse are explicit Apple options; Google cautions that its filters are not perfect.
Google-service filtering Android with Family Link Chrome, Search, YouTube and other Google-service filters are part of the documented controls.
Apple content, privacy and communication settings iPhone with Screen Time Content & Privacy Restrictions and Communication Safety are integrated with Family Sharing.

This is not a universal ranking. A family with an Android child device cannot apply iPhone Screen Time controls to it, and a family with an iPhone cannot turn Family Link into a full iOS-management system. Hardware choice is therefore the first parental-control decision: an Android smartphone is the supervised Family Link device, while an iPhone is the Screen Time and Family Sharing device.

Important limits, compatibility checks and failure modes

The rule is attached to the managed account and device

Before troubleshooting a missing limit, check that the child is signed in with the supervised Google Account or Apple Account and that the device appears in the parent’s management view. A second account, a reset phone or an unlisted device can make a correctly configured rule appear ineffective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power and connectivity affect remote actions

Family Link location requires the child’s Android device to be powered on and connected to the internet. Remote screen-time and app management require the Family Link app. If a change is not visible, restore connectivity, open the management app and allow time for the device to report.

Filters are not guarantees

Google’s warning about imperfect SafeSearch, Chrome and Play filters should shape the household rule: filtering lowers risk but does not replace supervision, conversation or device-use boundaries. Apple’s Communication Safety similarly detects certain categories of harmful imagery; it is not a complete moderation system.

Updates, age and region can change availability

Apple’s parental-control documentation published September 14, 2026 describes iOS 27-era controls and notes variation by operating-system version, child age, device, state, country and region. Some newer controls require every device in the Family Sharing group to be updated. Google’s help and product materials are current to 2026, but Android menus and supported devices can also change after major releases. Record the phone model, operating-system version and account region when setting up a child’s device, then recheck controls after a major update.

A practical family rollout

  1. Choose the platform based on the child’s actual phone and the parent’s management ecosystem, not on a single feature name.
  2. Write down the goals: daily hours, school-night downtime, allowed apps, purchase approval, website mode, communication contacts and location needs.
  3. Configure one control at a time and test it from the child’s device. Confirm the expected request, block screen or schedule appears.
  4. Keep essential calling, accessibility and school apps available where the platform permits unlimited-use exceptions.
  5. Tell the child what is monitored, which requests require approval and how to ask for a legitimate exception.
  6. Review activity and rules together periodically. Adjust limits for age, school requirements and demonstrated responsibility rather than leaving an untested default in place.
  7. After an operating-system, account or device change, repeat the tests; a policy that worked on one device or version may not cover another.

Google describes Family Link as a way to understand device use and set daily limits, schedules and other restrictions. Apple describes Screen Time as a way to manage the apps and websites a child can access, who they communicate with and when they use their devices. In practice, the deciding factor is whether your family needs Android-centered remote supervision and location or Apple-centered communication, purchase and privacy approval.
