These settings can limit background work or make an alert silent or hidden. Change one setting at a time so you can see whether it affects the problem.
1. Check whether battery settings restrict the app
Start with the app whose alerts are late. Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity; Google warns that apps, network connections, and some features may experience delays while it is on. Check whether the issue coincides with Battery Saver or an automatic battery-saving schedule. Google’s Android battery guidance describes this behavior.

On Pixel phones, Adaptive Battery may reduce performance and delay notifications. Google’s documented path to the affected app’s battery setting is Settings → Apps → See all apps → [app] → App battery usage → Allow background usage. Available choices and labels can vary by Android version and phone maker. Google discusses Adaptive Battery and app optimization in its Pixel battery optimization guidance.

2. Check background data and Data Saver
Background data lets an app update or provide notifications when you are not actively using it. If Data Saver is enabled, look in Settings for an option that permits unrestricted data or background data for the affected app. The exact path and available controls differ by Android version and device.
Google Play’s background-data guidance explains the relationship between background data, notifications, and Data Saver, including version-specific instructions. Its steps should not be assumed to apply identically to every app or Android phone.

3. Make sure notifications are enabled and not silent
Open the affected app’s notification settings and confirm notifications are allowed. If the app has notification categories or channels, check the one used for the alert: it may be set to Silent rather than Alerting. On Pixel, alerting notifications can make a sound or vibrate; silent notifications appear in the notification shade without sound or vibration. That can make an alert seem late even if it arrived earlier. See Google’s Pixel notification settings guidance.
Google also cautions that settings that save battery or reduce interruptions can sometimes delay or stop notifications. If the app’s notifications are enabled but still missing or delayed, continue to the mode and schedule checks below.

4. Check Do Not Disturb and scheduled modes
Do Not Disturb and modes such as Bedtime or Driving can silence or filter alerts. Review which apps, people, and interruption types are allowed, then check whether a schedule or automatic rule turns a mode on at the time notifications seem to disappear. A notification that was filtered or silenced may be mistaken for one that arrived late.
Menu names and controls vary; some of Google’s current instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Use Settings search for “Do Not Disturb” or “Modes” if the path differs on your phone. Google’s Android guidance on Do Not Disturb and modes explains filters and schedules.

5. Use notification history to narrow down what happened
If your phone offers Notification history and it is enabled, check it for recent alerts, including notifications you dismissed or snoozed. History may help establish whether an alert appeared quietly or was cleared, but it cannot by itself explain why delivery was delayed. Not all devices offer the feature, and the setting path varies. Google explains the availability caveat in its notification history guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChange one setting at a time
- Choose one affected app. Note when its next expected notification should arrive and whether it appears late, silently, or only after you open the app.
- Check battery restrictions. Review Battery Saver and that app’s background-use setting; adjust the app-specific setting only if the battery tradeoff is acceptable.
- Check data access. Review Data Saver and whether the app may use background data.
- Check alert settings and modes. Confirm the relevant notification category is enabled and review Do Not Disturb, other modes, and schedules.
- Observe the next alert before changing another setting. If the issue remains, move to the next check rather than changing several controls at once.
Settings are not the only possible explanation for a specific late alert. The guidance above identifies phone settings that can limit background work, data, or visible interruptions; it does not diagnose app-server, carrier, or connectivity problems in an individual case. If these checks do not help, consult the phone maker’s support and the app developer’s help for device- and app-specific troubleshooting.
