AetherTune: Is Terminal Radio Right for Your Listening Style?

AetherTune is an open-source Rust application for browsing and streaming internet radio from a terminal. It pairs station search and genre browsing with favorites, listening history, stream information and an audio visualizer. It is best suited to readers who prefer keyboard-driven tools and are willing to check platform-specific setup; it is not a conventional desktop radio app.

What AetherTune does

The AetherTune maintainers describe it as “A terminal-based internet radio player with real-time audio visualization, built in Rust.” Public stations are discovered through the RadioBrowser API. The README says users can search by station name, filter by genre and receive popularity-sorted results, with broken streams and spam filtered. An optional two-letter country setting blends local stations into results. These are project descriptions, not independently verified assessments of station coverage or stream reliability.

Beyond finding stations, the app records favorites and listening history in JSON and can keep a rolling log of song changes based on ICY stream metadata. Its stream-health panel displays bitrate, buffer, codec and connection uptime. Configurable keybindings and built-in color themes allow some interface customization; the README also lists a performance profiler.

How the controls and browsing work

The documented defaults are keyboard-oriented. Press / to search stations, use [ and ] to move through genres, press Enter to play a selection, f to favorite it and q to quit. The README says bindings can be remapped, so these defaults need not be the final layout.

Ocean Digital WR-03M Internet Radio Receiver (No Built-in Speaker) with Bluetooth, FM, Wi-Fi, LAN, Optical & Line Out, UPnP/DLNA Streaming, Alarm Clock, Podcasts HiFi Component for Home Audio System
  • All-in-One Internet Radio Component: Seamlessly access thousands of global stations via Wi-Fi or LAN, using Skytune, enjoy Podcasts, local FM radio, and stream music from your phone via Bluetooth (Requires external speakers or amplifier—no built-in speaker driver).
  • HiFi Integration Ready: Easily connect to your home audio system with stereo line-out or optical output. No built-in speaker—designed as a pure tuner for audiophiles who want flexibility, or if you already have an amplifier or stereo systems to connect with.
  • Smart Streaming & Playlist Control: Supports UPnP and DLNA for streaming music from networked PCs or NAS drives. Create and manage playlists or stream directly from your home server.
  • Enhanced User Control: Comes with a full-function remote control and 3.2" color screen. Browse stations, set sleep timers, alarms, EQ sound modes, and manage your favorites. Option to display a clock while playing with adjustable dimmer settings.
  • Multiple Playback Modes & Alarms: Supports alarm via favorite station, FM, or tone. Sleep timer, kitchen timer, podcast playback with resume function, and remote web control via Skytune website.

This design makes AetherTune a natural fit for people comfortable navigating text interfaces. Readers who expect mouse-first browsing, a conventional desktop player window or a fully graphical station guide may find the terminal interface a poor match.

Installation and platform requirements

The project documents installation routes for Arch Linux through the AUR, Ubuntu Noble 24.04 through a PPA, Homebrew on Linux and macOS, prebuilt macOS and Linux archives, Windows ZIP files, Nix flakes, and Cargo or source installation. Release assets and package availability can change, so consult the official AetherTune repository for current instructions.

Requirements depend on the chosen installation route and desired features. The README names mpv as a playback dependency for several installation methods. Real-time visualization has additional operating-system-specific audio-capture requirements; it is separate from the ability to browse stations and play radio.

  • Linux: Real-time visualization needs PulseAudio/PipeWire-related capture support, such as parec or pipewire-pulse. Without audio capture support, the visualizer falls back to simulation.
  • Windows: Visualization uses WASAPI loopback. The project recommends Windows Terminal because legacy cmd.exe has limited support for the keyboard input and ANSI rendering expected by TUI apps. This is a user-experience recommendation, not a stated installation blocker.
  • macOS: Real-time capture requires macOS 14.4 or later and a one-time permission prompt. On older macOS versions, the visualizer is simulated while browsing and playback remain available.

What to expect from the visualizer

The visualizer is a distinct feature from the radio player: a machine can still browse and play stations when real-time audio capture is unavailable. In that situation, AetherTune documents a simulated visualization rather than live analysis. This fallback is specifically relevant on Linux without capture support and on macOS versions earlier than 14.4.

Internet radio versus a personal music server

Optional Subsonic-compatible server support serves a different purpose from public station browsing. The README says users can connect to a server they operate, with Navidrome, Gonic and Airsonic named as examples, then browse artists, albums and playlists, search their library and play songs through AetherTune. This mode depends on having access to a compatible personal music server; it does not replace the RadioBrowser station-discovery feature.

Who should choose AetherTune?

  • Consider it if you like terminal applications, want keyboard-driven access to internet radio, and value favorites, listening history, station metadata or stream-health information.
  • Check your setup first if live visualization matters to you. Confirm the capture path for your operating system, and distinguish simulated visualization from live audio analysis.
  • Look elsewhere if you want a conventional graphical radio app or need independently verified evidence about stream reliability, performance, security or usability. The project documentation describes features, but does not establish those qualities through independent testing.

Verdict

AetherTune’s appeal is its combination of terminal-based station discovery, playback, personal listening records and stream details, with optional Subsonic library access. The main trade-off is that the terminal interface and platform-dependent audio-capture setup will not suit every listener. Its documented visualizer fallback helps preserve the basic radio experience when live capture is unavailable, but readers should treat the README’s feature and performance statements as maintainer claims rather than hands-on findings.
