On a supported Android phone, the built-in Notification history screen can bring back a notification you swiped away—but only if history was enabled before that alert arrived. Open your notification settings, switch on the history control, and use the resulting log for future alerts. On Google Pixel, entries are organized into Recently dismissed and Last 24 hours; Google says the Pixel log covers dismissed notifications from the previous 24 hours.

Find a dismissed notification on Android

Notification history is Android’s built-in recovery view for recent alerts. It is not a permanent archive and it cannot reconstruct an alert that the phone never recorded. The most important check is therefore whether the feature was already enabled when you dismissed the notification.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Choose Notification history. If the item is not visible, use the Settings search box and search for notification history.
  4. Turn on Use Notification history, or the similarly named switch shown by your phone.
  5. Return to this screen whenever you need to inspect a recent alert. On Pixel, check Recently dismissed and then Last 24 hours.
  6. Tap an entry when the screen offers it. On Pixel, tapping a listed notification opens the app that generated it.

Turning the switch on now starts recording future notifications; it does not populate the screen with alerts dismissed earlier while logging was disabled.

Google Pixel: use Recently dismissed and Last 24 hours

Pixel phones expose the clearest version of the feature. After you enable history, the screen separates alerts into two useful areas:

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  • Recently dismissed: notifications you actively swiped away recently.
  • Last 24 hours: the broader one-day history of notifications recorded by the phone.

Google Pixel Help states that, when history is turned on, the phone keeps a list of notifications dismissed in the last 24 hours. That time limit is measured from the alert’s recent appearance, not from the moment you first open the history screen. An item that is already older than that window may no longer be available.

Selecting a Pixel entry can take you to the originating app. This is useful when the alert’s wording is brief but you remember which app sent it, or when you want to continue the task from the app rather than merely reread the text.

Samsung Galaxy: enable history under Advanced settings

On many Samsung Galaxy models, the control is placed one level deeper than on Pixel:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Advanced settings.
  4. Choose Notification history.
  5. Turn on the history switch.

Samsung describes this feature as a way to view recent notifications “exactly as they appeared.” Samsung’s support guidance does not establish a universal retention period for every Galaxy model, so treat the log as a recent-notification view rather than a guaranteed archive. Menu names can also vary with the phone’s software edition and language.

When your Android phone does not show Notification history

Android’s general help guidance tells users to check Settings and then Notifications to determine whether their device offers the feature. Manufacturers can rename, move, or omit the control, so the absence of the exact Pixel wording does not prove that every Android phone behaves identically.

Search the Settings app

Use the Settings search field and enter notification history. Try the shorter term history if the first search returns nothing. Open only a result that leads to a notification-log control; similarly named options may concern notification permissions rather than the history screen.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Check the manufacturer’s advanced notification area

If the main Notifications page has no match, inspect sections labelled Advanced settings, More settings, or an equivalent submenu. Samsung commonly uses Advanced settings. Other manufacturers may place the switch elsewhere or provide no built-in log at all.

Confirm that you are changing the phone’s system settings

A third-party launcher or an individual app’s notification page cannot create Android’s system history. The setting must be enabled in the device’s Settings app. If a work profile or administrator manages the phone, that profile may also affect which notification controls are available.

What Notification history actually records

Android Open Source Project documentation describes Notification history as a device screen containing snoozed notifications, a limited group of recently dismissed notifications, and a history covering the last day of notifications. Those categories explain why the screen can contain more than the one alert you remember swiping away.

  • Snoozed notifications: alerts temporarily deferred through Android’s snooze action.
  • Recently dismissed notifications: a limited set of alerts you removed from the shade.
  • Last-day history: notifications recorded during the device’s recent one-day window.

The word “history” should not be read as an unlimited message store. Android keeps a short, bounded record, and the exact presentation depends on the phone’s software. It is intended to help you recover a recent alert, not to preserve every notification delivered over weeks or months.

How long does Android keep dismissed notifications?

For Google Pixel, the published guidance is the last 24 hours when Notification history is enabled. Android’s platform documentation also describes a last-day history and only a handful of recently dismissed items. That means a notification can disappear because it has aged out, even if you have not manually cleared the history screen.

Samsung’s support material calls the entries recent notifications but does not state one retention period that applies to every Galaxy phone. Other Android manufacturers may implement different limits. Unless your phone documents a specific duration, do not assume that an alert will remain available for a full day—or that every model uses the same cutoff.

Retention also depends on when recording began. Enabling the switch after an alert was dismissed does not backfill that earlier event. The phone can retain only notifications that arrived after history was active, subject to the device’s own limit.

Why a dismissed notification may be missing

History was disabled when the alert arrived

This is the most decisive limitation. Notification history is not a time machine. If the switch was off, Android had no history entry to display, and enabling it later starts a new record for future alerts.

The alert is outside the retention window

On Pixel, check whether more than 24 hours have passed. The platform also keeps only a limited number of recently dismissed items, so an older alert can fall out as newer notifications arrive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone does not implement the feature

Notification history is device-dependent. If Settings search and the manufacturer’s advanced notification menus show no such control, that model or software edition may not provide the built-in screen.

The app did not include the information you need

History can display only the content that the original notification supplied. If an app posted a short title, omitted the message body, or used privacy settings that hid sensitive text, the history view cannot recreate information that was never exposed in the notification.

You are looking in the wrong profile or account context

Android can separate personal and managed work activity. If the alert came from a work profile, look for it in the profile that generated it and verify that the relevant profile is active. A system history screen cannot substitute for an app’s own account-specific activity log.

Device differences at a glance

Device or platform Where to look Retention described by the cited guidance What tapping an entry does
Google Pixel Settings > Notifications > Notification history Dismissed notifications from the last 24 hours; Android also describes a limited recent set Opens the originating app when the entry is tapped
Samsung Galaxy Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history Recent notifications; one universal duration is not stated in the cited Samsung material Behavior is not established as identical to Pixel
Other supported Android phones Usually under Settings > Notifications; search Settings and inspect advanced notification menus Depends on the manufacturer and software; not stated universally Depends on the device’s implementation

The table’s differences matter when you follow instructions written for another phone. A Pixel owner should expect the two named sections and a 24-hour description; a Galaxy owner should start in Advanced settings; another Android user may need to locate a manufacturer-specific version or confirm that no built-in history exists.

Use notification history as a recovery workflow

Enable it before you need it

Because earlier alerts cannot be reconstructed after the fact, enable the switch as soon as you decide that recovering accidental dismissals matters. Do this in the system Settings app, not only inside a frequently used app.

Check the log soon after a mistake

A short retention period and a limited dismissed list make prompt checking worthwhile. On Pixel, inspect Recently dismissed first, then Last 24 hours. On Samsung, open the Notification history page reached through Advanced settings.

Open the source app when the alert is actionable

If a history entry offers an app shortcut, use it to continue the task. Reading the saved text may tell you what happened, but the app is where you can respond, review the underlying record, or mark the item complete.

Use the app’s own activity view for older information

When Android history has aged out, look for the originating app’s inbox, account activity, order list, message thread, or other internal record. That is a separate data source; Notification history cannot extend its own retention period.

Privacy and sensitive notification text

Notification history can expose information that is no longer visible in the notification shade, so consider who can unlock and use the phone. The history view is still governed by what the original notification displayed and by privacy choices that concealed sensitive content. If an app masked a message on the lock screen or supplied no detailed text, history will not reveal a complete message that the notification never contained.

Review the screen on a device shared with family members or used for work. A dismissed alert may include previews, account names, delivery details, or other context that you intentionally removed from the shade. Android’s history feature does not turn a notification into a separate permanent archive, but while an entry remains in the supported window it can make that information visible again.

Practical answers to common recovery questions

Can I recover a notification that I dismissed before enabling history?

No. Enabling the switch begins future recording; it does not recreate an alert that arrived while the feature was off.

Does Notification history save every notification forever?

No. Android describes a last-day history and a limited number of recently dismissed items. Pixel’s current guidance specifies the previous 24 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the history show a complete message?

Only if the app placed that information in the original notification and device privacy settings allowed it to be shown. Missing text cannot be reconstructed by the history screen.

Why do instructions look different on my phone?

Notification history is device-dependent. Pixel and Galaxy put the control in different locations, and other manufacturers may rename, relocate, or omit it.

What to remember

Android’s Notification history is the right first stop after an accidental swipe, provided it was enabled in advance and the alert is still within the phone’s short retention window. Pixel users can work through Recently dismissed and Last 24 hours, while Galaxy users generally reach the control through Notifications and Advanced settings. For every other Android phone, search the system settings and verify the device-specific behavior instead of assuming that another manufacturer’s path or retention period applies.
