You generally can’t—and shouldn’t try to—bypass Android Mobile Device Management (MDM). The authorized way to remove management is to have the organization that enrolled the phone release it. The next step depends on whether your Android phone has a work profile or is fully managed by an organization.
First identify what kind of management is on the phone
Android uses a device policy controller (DPC) app to apply management policies. An enterprise mobility management (EMM) service typically provides the DPC on the phone and a cloud console for administrators. Android distinguishes a work profile from fully managed, device-owner enrollment; the two have different scopes and removal paths. Android’s device management overview describes both enrollment types.

| Enrollment | Typical ownership | What is managed | Authorized removal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work profile | May be a personal or organization-owned device | Work apps and data are separated into a profile. The organization’s EMM manages that profile, with limited exceptions for device-wide policies. | Ask the administrator to remove the work profile or end enrollment. |
| Fully managed (device owner) | Intended for an organization-owned device | Policies can apply to the entire device. | Contact the organization that enrolled or owns the phone and request release. |
Google’s Android Open Source Project says fully managed device-owner management “can be used only on organization-owned (company-owned) devices that are used for work.” Enrollment behavior can vary by Android version, manufacturer, and EMM configuration, so the administrator is the best source for the status of a particular phone.

Check whether the profile is paused or removed
A paused work profile is still on the phone: its work apps and notifications are simply switched off. Android lets users pause or resume a work profile through Settings or Quick Settings. The exact label and location can vary by device.

Request removal of the profile
To end enrollment, contact your organization’s administrator and ask them to remove the work profile. Removing it is different from pausing it: the profile and its work apps and data are deleted. Google’s Android Enterprise Security Paper states that “user data in the primary profile remains on the device” whether the user or an IT administrator removes the work profile. That document dates to 2020; manufacturer-specific behavior and current administrator settings may differ.
What if the phone is fully managed or second-hand?
If a company- or school-owned phone is fully managed, contact the organization’s IT administrator and ask them to release it from management. If you bought the phone second-hand and it still shows organizational enrollment, ask the seller to arrange release with the organization that enrolled it. Android documents device-owner provisioning as an organizational setup process; a buyer or user should not try to bypass that enrollment.

If the seller cannot arrange release, resolve the issue with them rather than relying on a reset. Do not assume the phone is ready for personal use until the organization has confirmed it is released.
Will a factory reset remove Android device management?
No. A factory reset is not a reliable way to remove management. It erases local data, and setup may be subject to Factory Reset Protection or may return the phone to organizational enrollment. Android’s device-management documentation describes provisioning and reset constraints, while the Android Enterprise Security Paper explains that Factory Reset Protection can help ensure IT controls setup after a reset.

Before any reset, back up data you are entitled to keep and contact the administrator or seller about release. A reset does not replace an authorized unenrollment, and it may leave you unable to complete setup.
