Offline-First With a Server: Lessons From Pulse’s Sync Engine

Pulse’s sync design let auditors start inspections offline, required photos to reach the server before form submission, and made pending uploads visible.

Pulse’s central sync lesson is that finishing work on a device is not the same as getting that work onto a server. For its offline-first inspection app, the team let auditors begin records without a network, uploaded attached photos before submitting each inspection form, and showed how many items were still waiting. Those choices made identity, upload order, and status part of correctness—not merely implementation details.

What offline-first meant for Pulse

Pulse was an inspection app for auditors who needed to work even when connectivity was unavailable. Their records still had to reach a server so other people could see them. That made offline use a starting condition, not an alternative to synchronization: a record could be usable locally while its server delivery remained pending.

Abhishek Goyal, who says he owned Pulse’s Android and iOS mobile work, describes designing the sync contract with the backend and web teams before implementing the clients. His portfolio lists the article as published September 24, 2026. Read Goyal’s account on DEV Community.

How Pulse’s sync decisions worked

Give the inspection an identity before it reaches the server

An auditor could start an inspection without waiting for a connection or for the server to create an ID. The client therefore needed to assign an identity locally. The trade-off is that the app must distinguish the local ID from the server ID and know which one a given operation expects. That distinction persists beyond the moment a connection returns; it is part of how client and server refer to the same work.

Upload photos before submitting the form

Photos were uploaded in the background while the auditor continued working. Pulse submitted the inspection form only after the server confirmed every attached photo. This sequencing tied the form’s submission to the availability of its evidence: the record would not be submitted while its required attachments were still only on the device.

The choice illustrates why upload order is a correctness decision. If a record refers to attachments, teams need to decide whether the server can accept the record before those attachments arrive or whether the attachments must be acknowledged first. Pulse used the latter sequence for inspection photos.

Show the difference between submitted and synchronized

After submission, Pulse displayed upload progress and the number of items still waiting. That gave users a visible distinction between work they had finished and work the server had received. Goyal’s broader point is that offline-first products have a gap between “the user is finished” and “the server has it”; when the interface hides that gap, users may assume the wrong state. Goyal’s article on DEV Community describes this as a lesson extending beyond Pulse.

  • Can a user begin a record without server-issued identity, and how will the client track its local and server IDs?
  • Do dependent attachments need server confirmation before the parent record is submitted?
  • Can users see which work is pending and which has reached the server?

Goyal’s account says concurrent edits to a single inspection were uncommon and that the app was designed to keep that the common case. The available published passage does not establish how Pulse resolved a conflict when concurrent edits did occur. It does not specify a merge rule, locking approach, last-write-wins behavior, or conflict-resolution screen, so none should be inferred.
