If an Android link keeps opening in the wrong app, clear the saved link association and choose the correct app again. On most phones, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Opening links, select the app that is taking over, and tap Clear default preferences, Clear defaults, or switch off Open supported links. Open the link again, select the app you want, and choose Just once to test it or Always to save it.
The exact wording and location vary by Android version and manufacturer, but the setting is the same: Android has stored an association between a URL (or another file action) and an installed app.

What resetting a link default changes
When you tap a web address, Android decides whether to open it in an app, a browser, or a chooser. If you previously selected Always, Android remembers that decision. It can therefore send a YouTube, Maps, Reddit, PDF, or other link to an app you no longer want to use.

Clearing the default removes that saved choice for the relevant action. It does not uninstall the app, delete your account, erase app data, or reset every setting on the phone. The next time you perform the same action, Android can ask which installed app should handle it.

Google Pixel Help describes the result this way: “After you clear the default app settings, when you take that action again, your device will ask which app to use.”
Reset a wrong app association
Use the Default apps menu
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Default apps. Some phones place this inside an overflow menu or an Advanced section.
- Tap Opening links.
- Choose the app that is intercepting the link.
- Tap Clear default preferences or Clear defaults. On some versions, turn off Open supported links instead.
- Return to the message, email, notification, or webpage containing the link and tap it again.
- When Android displays the app chooser, select the app that should handle the address.
- Choose Just once for a one-time test or Always to save the association.
The menu may show a list of domains or supported web addresses after you select an app. Enable the relevant domain if you want that app to claim its own links.
Open the setting from the app’s page
If you cannot find Opening links, use the app currently opening the address:

- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Tap the app that opens the link incorrectly.
- Open Open by default.
- Tap Clear default preferences or Clear defaults, or disable Open supported links.
- Tap the original link and make a new choice in the chooser.
This route is useful when a manufacturer hides the central Default apps screen or gives each app its own link controls.

Choose between “Just once” and “Always”

Motorola’s support guidance notes that selecting Always prevents future prompts until the saved default is cleared. If you want Android to ask again, repeat the reset procedure rather than repeatedly tapping a different app in the chooser.
Why Android shows different labels
Android’s settings screens change between releases and manufacturer software. The same control can appear as:
- Default apps
- Opening links
- Open by default
- Clear default preferences
- Clear defaults
- Open supported links
These labels describe the same underlying relationship between an action or URL and an installed app. A Pixel phone may expose the control from Default apps; a Motorola phone documents Settings > Apps > Default apps > Opening links. Samsung and other manufacturers can nest equivalent controls elsewhere or use slightly different wording.
Finding the control with Settings search
On phones with a Settings search box, search for default apps, opening links, or open by default. Open the result that leads to app-link handling, not a browser’s internal settings. If search returns several results, choose the one under Apps.

Make YouTube, Maps, Reddit, or another app handle its links
Reset the app that currently owns the link, then assign the destination app when the chooser returns. For example, if a video address opens in a browser but you want the YouTube app, clear the browser’s relevant default or disable its supported-link handling, tap the video address again, and select the YouTube app. If a map address is being claimed by the wrong map application, clear that application’s default and select the map app you prefer.
The domain list shown in Open by default matters when an app supports several websites. Enable only the domains you intend that app to open. A domain that is not enabled may continue to open in a browser or trigger the chooser.
Test with a fresh link
After changing the setting, tap a new link from the same domain. Some apps display links inside their own web view, and that internal view may not invoke Android’s external app chooser. Testing from a text message, email, or another app that hands the URL to Android gives you a clearer result.

First repeat the user-side reset for the app that should own the domain. If the app remains unavailable or Android consistently opens the browser, the issue may be developer-side App Links verification rather than a saved preference on your phone.

Android Developers states that Android 12 and higher use the updated domain-verification process automatically for apps targeting Android 12 or higher. Verification connects a website to a particular app release. If that connection fails, Android may treat the address as an ordinary web link and send it to the browser even when the app is installed.
What the website owner must verify
The site must publish an association file at https://<domain>/.well-known/assetlinks.json. Android’s troubleshooting guidance calls for all of the following:
- The file is served over HTTPS.
- The response contains valid JSON.
- The request does not redirect.
- The package name and signing information identify the intended app.
- The SHA-256 certificate fingerprint matches the certificate used by the installed release.
- When Google Play App Signing is used, the fingerprint includes the Play App Signing certificate, not only a local upload key.
These checks require access to the website and app signing configuration. A phone user can clear defaults, but cannot repair a missing or invalid association file. Contact the app publisher when the user reset has no effect and the domain fails verification.

- If the chooser appears after clearing defaults, the problem was a local saved association.
- If the preferred app appears in the chooser but does not open automatically, review its supported domains.
- If the app never appears for a domain while the app is installed, the domain’s verification or the app’s declared links may be at fault.
- If only one website fails while other links from the same app work, report that domain to the app publisher.
Reset PDF, map, music, and other file links
The same pattern applies beyond ordinary web pages. Motorola lists PDFs, map links, music files, and other categories as actions for which Android may remember an Always choice.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Go to Default apps and then Opening links, if those menus exist.
- Otherwise open the app currently handling the file and choose Open by default.
- Clear the saved preference or disable Open supported links.
- Open the file or link again.
- Select the intended app and choose Just once before committing to Always.
For a PDF, for example, clear the PDF viewer that launches unexpectedly, then open the same document from the original message or file manager and select the viewer you want. For a map link, clear the unwanted map app and test the address before saving a permanent choice.
Troubleshoot a chooser that does not appear
The old app still opens immediately
- Confirm that you cleared the default for the app actually launching the link, not merely the app you want to use.
- Check both Default apps > Opening links and the interfering app’s Open by default page.
- Look for separate domain switches under Open supported links.
- Tap a link from a different source to rule out an in-app browser that bypasses the system chooser.
The intended app is missing
- Verify that the app is installed and enabled.
- Install pending updates, then retry the link.
- Check whether the app supports that particular domain or file type.
- Use the browser temporarily if the app publisher has not configured the domain for app links.
The chooser appears every time
Repeated prompts usually mean no permanent choice was saved, the selected app was set to Just once, or multiple apps remain eligible for the same domain. Select Always after confirming the correct handler. If Android continues prompting, inspect the domain switches in each eligible app and leave the preferred app enabled.
The app opens, but the wrong screen appears
That behavior can be caused by the app itself, an expired or malformed URL, an account requirement, or a link format the app does not support. Resetting Android’s association only determines which app receives the URL; it cannot change how that app interprets the destination.

Android can store separate associations for different apps and domains. If links from several services are misrouted, clear each interfering app individually rather than resetting every app preference at once. A broad reset can also affect notification permissions, background restrictions, or other app behavior depending on the manufacturer’s reset screen.

What not to do
- Do not uninstall the preferred app merely because Android saved the wrong handler.
- Do not clear all app data unless the app itself is malfunctioning; clearing a link default is a narrower fix.
- Do not assume a browser problem when the domain is failing App Links verification.
- Do not repeatedly choose different apps with Always; that creates another saved association instead of testing the result.

- Tap the original URL, PDF, map, or other file link again.
