Android with Health Connect is more flexible for combining watches, rings, scales and health apps from different manufacturers. Neither platform is universally more accurate: results depend on sensors, fit, algorithms, permissions, software and your country.
The phone is the hub; the wearable does most of the measuring
A smartphone can count movement with its built-in sensors, store records and coordinate permissions. It is not, by itself, a continuous medical monitor. Heart-rhythm traces, overnight oxygen readings, skin temperature, sleep stages and similar measurements generally come from a watch, ring or other Bluetooth device.

This distinction explains many apparently conflicting comparisons. An iPhone with no Apple Watch cannot produce an Apple Watch ECG. An Android phone with no compatible wearable can still provide phone-level steps, estimated distance and active calories through Health Connect, but it cannot create a reliable overnight heart-rate or oxygen record that its hardware does not measure.
When comparing platforms, evaluate the complete system you will actually wear: phone, wearable, companion app, cloud account, permissions and regional availability. The dashboard on the phone may display fewer metrics than the wearable collected, because a partner app can choose not to share every field.

What iPhone Health and Apple Watch can measure
Cardiac and circulation features
Apple documents a broad set of heart-related functions when a compatible Apple Watch is paired with an iPhone:
- Periodic heart-rate readings and overnight heart rate.
- High- and low-heart-rate notifications.
- Irregular-rhythm notifications.
- The ECG app, which records a single-lead electrocardiogram.
- AFib History, where supported.
- Heart-rate variability (HRV).
- Low-cardio-fitness notifications.
- Possible-hypertension notifications on compatible models and in supported regions.
The ECG app creates a PDF that you can share with a clinician. An irregular-rhythm or possible-hypertension notification is a prompt to seek appropriate medical evaluation, not a diagnosis. Apple Watch and its sensors are not a substitute for clinical equipment.
Apple’s health material notes that “Your heart beats over 100,000 times per day.” That is Apple’s explanatory statement, not a measurement made by every watch user. Apple also reports that more than 350,000 people contribute health data to Apple Research; that participation figure is Apple’s own statement.
Sleep and overnight measurements
Apple Watch can send sleep duration, sleep stages and a sleep score to the Health app. It can also record overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature and blood oxygen when the watch model, software and region support those features. Sleep results require wearing the watch overnight with a reasonably secure fit and enough battery to cover the period.

Sleep stages and scores are algorithmic estimates. They are useful for trends, but a stage label is not equivalent to a clinical sleep study. Missing nights commonly result from charging, an uncomfortable fit, disabled permissions or an incomplete synchronization.
Activity, environment and safety
The Apple Watch ecosystem can contribute exercise and activity metrics, daylight exposure, environmental-noise levels and fall history. Apple also documents respiratory-rate tracking, wrist-temperature data and blood-oxygen measurements for supported hardware. Low-cardio-fitness notifications use activity and heart data to identify a pattern that may deserve attention.
Fall history is a record of detected events, not a guarantee that every fall will be recognized. Noise readings describe the sound level detected around the watch; they do not measure hearing damage directly.
Health records and manual entries
The Health app brings medications, sleep, activity and other information into one place. After you grant permission, third-party apps and Bluetooth health devices can write data. You can also enter menstrual cycles, medications, supplements and body measurements manually. Manual records are valuable for context, but their quality depends on consistent entry and accurate timestamps.

Privacy and sharing controls
Apple says, “Your health data is encrypted on your device and is accessible only with your passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID.” With default two-factor authentication, Apple says health data synchronized to iCloud is end-to-end encrypted so Apple cannot access it. Those statements describe Apple’s stated protection model; your passcode, account security and backup choices still matter.
What Android and Health Connect can measure
Phone-only tracking
Android Health Connect includes on-device tracking for steps, estimated distance and active calories. Android Developers says these values are generated from device sensors and made available to apps that receive permission. You can disable this tracking in Android Settings while previously recorded data remains stored.
Steps, distance and active calories are estimates. A phone left on a desk cannot count movement that never reaches its sensors, and calorie estimates vary with the data and formula used. Health Connect starts sharing only after you grant the relevant permission.

How partner devices appear in Google Health
Google’s current connection guide explains that Google Health can display information received through Health Connect or Apple Health, but not every partner shares every metric. Values can differ between dashboards because each app calculates from the data available to it.

| Connected device or source | Metrics Google lists as available when supported | Important gaps or limits noted by Google |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch through Apple Health | Steps, flights, distance, energy, sleep duration and stages, exercise routes, weight, VO2 max, heart rate, HRV, SpO2, breathing rate, resting heart rate and temperature variation | Exercise minutes, stand hours, ECG, irregular-rhythm alerts and full-day vitals are not yet available in Google Health for this connection. |
| Garmin watches | Steps, distance, floors, energy, sleep, exercise summaries, heart rate, resting heart rate and weight | Several detailed metrics may not be shared; the guide does not promise complete parity with the Garmin app. |
| Oura | Steps, distance, sleep duration and stages, exercise, heart rate, HRV and weight | Gaps include SpO2, skin temperature and ECG-type alerts. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | Steps, distance, energy, sleep, exercise, heart rate, SpO2, VO2 max and weight | Floors, skin temperature, HRV, breathing rate, minute-level steps and health alerts are not shared into Google Health. |
| Withings watches and scales | Supported activity, sleep, weight and other data exposed by the connection | Google explicitly says Withings blood-pressure data is not yet supported in Google Health. |
“Available” in this table means that Google lists the category for the connection; it does not mean every model, country, firmware version or account will expose it. The source app may retain a more detailed record than Google Health receives.
Permissions and data portability
Health Connect acts as a central permission layer. You choose which app can read or write each category, and you can change those choices later. Google’s privacy page states, “You decide who you want to share your data with and what types of data you want to share.” Google also says users can share, opt in, export or delete Google Health data, and that Google Health data is not used for Google Ads.
Granular permissions are useful when you want a fitness app to read steps but not medications, or a scale app to write weight without reading heart data. They also create more setup work: a missing permission can look like a sensor failure even when the wearable recorded the measurement correctly.

| Your priority | Better-documented fit | Why it fits | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECG, AFib History and irregular-rhythm alerts | iPhone plus Apple Watch | Apple documents the ECG app, AFib History and rhythm notifications in the integrated Watch and Health experience. | Compatible hardware, software and country restrictions apply; these are not medical devices. |
| Possible-hypertension pattern notifications | iPhone plus compatible Apple Watch | Apple documents notifications and a follow-up workflow using a blood-pressure cuff. | A notification is not a diagnosis, and supported models and regions vary. |
| Phone-only steps, distance and active calories | Android plus Health Connect | Android documents native sensor tracking for all three categories. | Values are estimates, and tracking requires permission. |
| Mixing brands and apps | Android plus Health Connect | Health Connect provides centralized permissions and documented connections for several watch, ring and scale ecosystems. | Partners may omit metrics or calculate them differently. |
| Sleep | Neither phone wins alone; the wearable decides | Both ecosystems can display sleep duration and stages when a compatible wearable supplies them. Apple additionally documents sleep score and overnight vitals in its ecosystem. | Wear time, fit, battery and algorithms determine the useful result. |
| Privacy controls | Different strengths | Apple emphasizes device and iCloud encryption; Google emphasizes granular sharing, portability, deletion and no Google Ads use for Google Health data. | These are different guarantees. Check the exact app, account and backup data flow. |
Accuracy: why there is no universal winner
The available official documentation does not provide one independent, head-to-head accuracy statistic proving that Android or iPhone is more accurate overall. Accuracy is a use-case question.

- Sensor hardware: optical heart-rate sensors, temperature sensors, accelerometers and pulse-oximetry components differ by model.
- Fit and placement: a loose band, movement during exercise, tattoos, skin contact and sleeping position can affect readings.
- Algorithms: two apps can calculate calories, sleep stages, HRV or VO2 max from the same underlying signal and produce different values.
- Permissions and synchronization: a blocked read or write permission creates an incomplete record rather than an inaccurate sensor.
- Wear time and charging: removing a watch for several hours leaves gaps that can distort daily or overnight trends.
- Region and software: regulatory clearance, firmware and country availability determine whether ECG, blood oxygen or hypertension features appear.
For trends, use the same device, fit and measurement routine over time. For symptoms, an alert or unusual reading should be discussed with a qualified clinician rather than treated as a diagnosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up iPhone Health and Apple Watch correctly
- Check compatibility. Confirm that your Apple Watch model, iPhone, watchOS and iOS versions support the features you want, and verify regional availability for ECG, blood oxygen, AFib History and hypertension notifications.
- Pair and update. Complete Apple Watch pairing in the Watch app, install available system updates and keep Bluetooth enabled during synchronization.
- Review Health permissions. Open the Health app, select your profile, then review Apps and Devices. Allow only the categories each app needs to read or write.
- Configure heart features. In the Watch app and Health settings, enable high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications and any supported cardiac features. Follow the on-screen setup for ECG and AFib History.
- Configure sleep. Set a sleep schedule, enable sleep tracking and wear the watch overnight. Charge before bed or use a routine that leaves enough battery for the night.
- Check data sources. In Health, open a metric and inspect Data Sources & Access. Put the preferred device first when multiple sources record the same category.
- Share deliberately. Use Health sharing or the ECG export option only with people and services you trust. Revisit sharing permissions when you stop using an app.
Set up Android Health Connect and connected wearables
- Open Health Connect. Find Health Connect in Android Settings or the Health Connect app, depending on your Android version and manufacturer interface.
- Grant phone tracking permission. Enable on-device steps, distance and active-calorie tracking if you want a phone-only baseline. Disabling it stops new tracking but does not erase previously recorded data.
- Connect the wearable’s companion app. Sign in to the manufacturer app, enable its Health Connect or Apple Health connection, and select the categories to share.
- Set read and write permissions. In Health Connect, review each app’s permissions by data type. A fitness app may need exercise and heart rate but not medications or reproductive-health records.
- Choose source priority. If two devices write steps or weight, inspect the metric’s source list and avoid counting duplicate records from overlapping devices.
- Verify synchronization. Record a short walk, wait for the companion app to sync, then check Health Connect and Google Health. If the source app has data but the dashboard does not, revisit permissions and the partner’s supported-metrics list.
- Export or delete when needed. Use Google’s available export and deletion controls before changing phones or closing an account, and check whether the companion app keeps a separate copy.
Choose by the workflow you will actually use
Choose the iPhone route when cardiac documentation is the priority
Choose an iPhone with a compatible Apple Watch if you specifically want the documented combination of ECG, AFib History, irregular-rhythm notifications, possible-hypertension notifications and integrated safety features. Confirm that your model and region support each feature before buying or relying on it.
Choose Android when you need a mixed-device setup
Choose Android with Health Connect if you expect to combine brands, switch between apps or control access category by category. Its strength is interoperability rather than a single manufacturer’s complete feature set. Verify the exact metrics your chosen watch, ring or scale will share before assuming that the Google dashboard will show everything.

Choose based on sleep habits, not the phone logo
For sleep, the device that you can wear comfortably every night is usually more useful than a phone preference. Compare battery routines, fit, charging time and the sleep metrics your wearable actually exports. Both ecosystems can show duration and stages, while Apple’s integrated system also documents sleep score and overnight vitals.
Use a cuff or clinical device for blood pressure
Possible-hypertension notifications are pattern prompts. If blood pressure is your concern, use a validated cuff according to clinical guidance and share readings with a healthcare professional. Do not treat a watch notification, or the absence of one, as proof that your blood pressure is normal.
Troubleshoot missing or conflicting health data
- No steps or distance: confirm that phone tracking is enabled, the app has activity permission and the phone was carried during the activity.
- Heart-rate data appears on the watch but not the phone: check Bluetooth, account synchronization and Health or Health Connect write permission for heart rate.
- Sleep stages are missing: check that sleep tracking is enabled, the wearable was worn overnight and the battery did not run out.
- SpO2, HRV or temperature is absent: verify model, firmware, region and the partner’s supported-metrics list. A connection may share heart rate while omitting these additional fields.
- Duplicate steps or weight: inspect source priority and disable writing from one overlapping device.
- Different numbers in two dashboards: compare timestamps, source devices, units and calculation methods. Differences do not automatically mean that one app is broken.
- ECG or rhythm alerts unavailable: check country eligibility, watch model, software version and age or account requirements shown during setup.
- Withings blood-pressure values missing in Google Health: Google currently documents that this data type is not supported in that destination, even if the originating service stores it.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you need ECG, AFib History or documented rhythm notifications? Verify a compatible Apple Watch and supported region.
- Do you want to combine Garmin, Oura, Samsung, Withings and other services? Check Health Connect’s current supported-metrics list for each device.
- Will you wear the device overnight? Prioritize comfort, battery and charging routine over the phone brand.
- Are you comparing calories, sleep stages or VO2 max? Expect algorithm differences and use one consistent source for trends.
- Do you share health data with apps or clinicians? Review read/write permissions, export options and account security before connecting anything.
- Are you making a medical decision? Treat consumer readings as informational and use appropriate clinical testing.
The best ecosystem is the one whose wearable supports your priority, whose permissions you can understand and whose data you will consistently collect. iPhone and Apple Watch lead on documented first-party cardiac and safety functions; Android and Health Connect lead on cross-brand flexibility. The measurement itself still comes from the hardware on your body, not from the phone’s logo.
