Wavelet: headphone equalizer is the Android app most closely associated with the experience in this headline. It can change the tonal balance of headphones you already own, using a model-specific AutoEq profile or manual controls. That may make the sound more to your taste, but it cannot repair damaged hardware or guarantee that you will prefer the result.
What Wavelet changes—and what it does not
Equalization raises or lowers parts of the audio frequency range. If headphones sound too bass-heavy, for example, lowering bass can change that balance; whether the result sounds better is personal. The app’s Google Play listing describes Wavelet as a system-wide Android equalizer and headphone equalizer, with AutoEq profiles, manual graphic EQ, a limiter, channel balance, virtualizer, and reverberation. The listing says root access is not required: Wavelet on Google Play.

Those controls affect playback processing, not the physical condition of a headphone. EQ does not fix a damaged driver, a poor connection, or other hardware fault, and a missing profile does not show that the headphones are defective. The effect also depends on whether the app is active on the playback route you are using.

Choose a headphone profile or adjust the sound yourself
Try an exact-model AutoEq profile
Wavelet’s feature guide documents more than 5,000 AutoEq headphone entries, with precalculated frequency-response compensation for particular models. That is Wavelet’s documented count, not an independent audit of the catalog. If your exact headphone model is listed, start there rather than assuming a similar model has the same response. A profile is a starting point, not a promise of a preferred sound. A headphone’s fit, individual hearing, playback level, and taste all affect the result. If the exact model is absent, Wavelet says its included data comes from AutoEq and a model cannot be included if none of AutoEq’s sources measured it. Custom compensation data can be imported when a suitable measurement exists; an absent entry is not evidence that the headphone is poor.
Use the nine-band graphic EQ for a manual change
Wavelet documents a nine-band graphic equalizer for cases where a model is not listed or you want to depart from the profile’s tuning. Make modest changes and listen to familiar material. Large boosts can consume digital headroom and cause clipping or distortion, so turning up a band is not a free gain in sound quality.

Wavelet describes its attenuator as the first digital signal-processing stage. Its automatic attenuation calculates the highest combined feature gain to reduce the risk of exceeding the digital limit. That is a safeguard, not a guarantee against clipping on every phone, audio route, or combination of effects. The feature guide describes the attenuator and other controls.

Check whether the app is active on your playback route
“System-wide” is a useful description, but it does not mean every Android app and device route behaves identically. Android’s Equalizer API says an effect can be attached to a particular audio session; attaching it to the global output mix through session 0 is deprecated. The practical result is that a player’s audio-session behavior and the phone’s audio implementation can affect whether a system effect works: Android Developers: Equalizer API.

Wavelet’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies Android version and audio HAL, manufacturer implementation, Bluetooth, external DACs, and other audio-effect apps as possible compatibility factors. On Android 15, the rollout of AIDL Audio HAL can leave some features unavailable on some devices. The app’s listing and troubleshooting information should therefore be read as broad compatibility guidance, not a guarantee for every combination: Wavelet troubleshooting guide.
- Connect the headphones you want to use and check whether the relevant features, including AutoEq, appear. Wavelet says features are displayed dynamically and AutoEq appears when headphones are connected.
- Play audio in the app you normally use. If no features appear, the player may not be notifying Android of active playback in a way Wavelet can use.
- Try another playback app to distinguish a player-specific session issue from a broader device or route issue.
- Check whether another equalizer or hearing-aid app is competing for the audio effect. Wavelet warns that such apps can conflict.
Wavelet documents a legacy mode that may work with some manufacturer audio frameworks when a player does not notify Android about active playback. It also documents experimental enhanced session detection for Android 10 and later, which requires additional permission setup. Make a fair comparison before deciding
To judge whether EQ helps, keep the headphones, playback, and connection route the same while comparing stock or flat sound, an exact-model AutoEq profile if available, and a restrained manual adjustment. Match perceived loudness as closely as practical: a louder setting can seem preferable even when the tonal change is not. Confirm that Wavelet indicates the expected device or profile, and check that the effect remains active during playback.
A phone or music-player preset is another possible starting point, but it may apply only inside that player or use a different adjustment. Compare it on the same route and at similar loudness. The key distinction is not which option is universally best; it is which one is active for your actual playback and which tonal balance you prefer.

Use device-specific fixes cautiously
Wavelet’s troubleshooting page offers some route-specific suggestions, but they are not universal fixes. For a Bluetooth issue in legacy mode, it suggests disabling “Disable Bluetooth A2DP hardware offload” in Android developer options. For some Bluetooth or DAC sample-rate problems, it suggests trying 48 kHz and/or SBC. Changing these settings can affect other audio behavior, so follow the guidance only when the described problem matches your setup.
For some Samsung devices, Wavelet says the UHQ upscaler can cause clipping and suggests changing it to “Bit upscaling only.” If Wavelet stops running, its troubleshooting page points to the phone maker’s battery restrictions as one possible cause. Neither symptom establishes a universal fault; use the guidance for the specific device and situation.
What to conclude if the sound still is not right
If Wavelet works and a restrained adjustment improves the tonal balance, that tells you EQ can address one part of what you hear with your current headphones. If no profile exists, you can try careful manual adjustment or look for suitable custom compensation data. If the app does not stay active, investigate the player, Android implementation, connection route, and competing effects before drawing conclusions about the headphones themselves.
