Android Has More Ways to Type Than the Keyboard You’re Using

Android lets you type by swiping, speaking, entering braille, using switches, or connecting a physical keyboard. Here’s how to choose the right method.

You don’t have to tap every letter on Android. You can trace words with a finger, dictate into a text field, use speech to control the whole device, enter braille, or connect a physical keyboard. The right option depends on whether you want to change on-screen typing, avoid touch, or use something beyond a keyboard.

Start by changing the keyboard you already have

If your goal is a different typing experience rather than a new input method, check your current keyboard’s settings first. On devices with Gboard, open an app with a text field, bring up the keyboard, open its features menu, and choose Settings. Gboard’s options include Glide typing, text correction, and voice typing. Google’s Gboard setup guide describes this route; labels and system Settings paths can differ across phones.

You can also change Gboard’s appearance and feedback under its theme, sound, and vibration preferences. Device-level vibration settings may override Gboard’s vibration setting; see Google’s theme, sound, and vibration guide. Customizing Gboard is different from installing or selecting another keyboard app, which is managed through your device’s input-method settings.

Swipe across letters instead of tapping them

Gboard’s Glide typing lets you keep a finger on the screen and slide from letter to letter to form a word; lift your finger when the word is complete. It’s a simple alternative if you want to stay with an on-screen keyboard but reduce individual taps.

To check it, open Gboard settings and look for Glide typing. Google notes that the feature is not supported in every language, and instructions can vary with Android version and customized devices. See Google’s Glide typing instructions. There is no basis here for promising a particular typing-speed improvement.

Dictate words into a text field

For text entry without typing, open Gboard and tap its microphone, then speak. Gboard voice typing can enter speech in many places where a keyboard is available. You can say punctuation commands such as “period,” “comma,” “question mark,” “new line,” or “new paragraph,” though supported languages and punctuation commands vary. Google’s voice typing guide explains the feature.

Use Voice Access to control more than typing

For braille input, TalkBack includes an on-screen six-dot braille keyboard. Connect a physical keyboard

Android supports external keyboards over USB or Bluetooth. A physical keyboard can be useful if you prefer tactile keys, use a tablet, or need a non-touch input option. If you are looking for one, “Bluetooth keyboard for Android” is a useful category to search; compatibility depends on the device and keyboard, and no particular model is established here.

On Android 16 and up, Google documents additional physical-keyboard accessibility settings, which appear when a physical keyboard is attached. These include Bounce Keys, which can ignore rapid repeated presses, and Mouse Keys, which let keyboard keys control the pointer. These specific settings should not be assumed to exist on older Android versions or every device. See Google’s physical-keyboard accessibility guide.

Explore switch and camera-based input

If touch input is difficult and speech or a keyboard is not the right fit, Android’s accessibility features also include Switch Access and Camera Switches. These offer other ways to interact with a device; what is available and what the feature is called can vary by market and device. Start in your device’s Accessibility settings or consult the manufacturer’s help. Google’s Android accessibility overview summarizes the options.
