Focus mode and Do Not Disturb solve different interruption problems. Focus mode pauses the distracting apps you select: you cannot use those apps while Focus mode is active, and their notifications are suppressed. Do Not Disturb is a broader interruption filter that can manage calls, messages, app notifications, alarms, media, reminders, calendar events, touch sounds, and visual disturbances according to the people, apps, and categories you allow.
Use Focus mode when the problem is opening particular apps. Use Do Not Disturb when the problem is the phone interrupting you, especially during sleep, meetings, driving, or concentrated work.

Focus mode and Do Not Disturb at a glance
| Question | Focus mode | Do Not Disturb |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | Selected distracting apps | Incoming interruptions across the device |
| What it blocks | Use of selected apps and notifications from those apps | Calls, messages, app notifications, alarms, media, reminders, calendar events, touch sounds, and visual interruptions, subject to your filters |
| Can you open the affected app? | No, while it is paused | Yes; Do Not Disturb does not make apps unavailable |
| Calls and messages | Not a phone-wide call or message filter | Can be allowed or silenced through People filters |
| Scheduling | Yes, with Set a schedule | Yes, with schedules or duration controls where supported |
| Temporary exception | Take a break for a chosen time limit | Allowed people, apps, categories, and a duration rule |
| Best fit | Work, study, or reducing access to chosen distracting apps | Sleep, meetings, driving, or controlling who and what can interrupt you |
The distinction is about scope. Focus mode acts on a list of apps. Do Not Disturb acts on types of interruptions that arrive through the phone.
What Focus mode silences
Focus mode is part of Android’s Digital Wellbeing tools. Google describes its behavior directly: “When Focus mode is on, you can’t use these apps and won’t get notifications from them.” You choose the apps that cause distraction, and Android pauses those apps for the duration of the mode.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
A paused app is both inaccessible and quiet. Its icon may remain visible, but opening it produces a notice that the app is paused rather than launching the normal interface. Notifications generated by the selected apps are also suppressed while Focus mode is active. This makes Focus mode useful when simply muting alerts is not enough; it removes the easy path to repeatedly checking a feed, game, shopping app, or chat service.
What Focus mode does not globally silence
Focus mode is not described by Google as a phone-wide sound or interruption filter. Functions outside the selected app list are not automatically muted. For example, enabling Focus mode does not by itself set a universal rule for every caller, every message, alarms, media playback, touch sounds, or notifications from apps you did not select.
That limitation is important for calls. Focus mode is not the Android setting to choose when the requirement is “no calls can ring.” Incoming calls are handled by the phone’s interruption controls, especially Do Not Disturb. Focus mode can suppress notifications from selected apps, but it should not be treated as a general call-blocking mode.
How to turn on and schedule Focus mode
The Digital Wellbeing path is consistent on many Android phones, although manufacturers can rename menus:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing (sometimes shown as Digital Wellbeing & parental controls).
- Choose Focus mode.
- Select each app you want paused. Pick the apps that create the distraction rather than every app you might need for essential phone functions.
- Tap Turn on now for an immediate session, or choose Set a schedule to define recurring days and times.
When a scheduled session begins, the selected apps are paused automatically. To make a one-time exception, return to the Focus mode screen and choose Take a break. Select the offered time limit; the chosen apps become available for that period and then pause again when the break ends.
Choosing the Focus app list
Build the list around the behavior you want to change. If the problem is checking short videos during study, pause the video and social apps rather than the entire communications category. If you need to remain reachable for work, leave the work chat or email app active and use Do Not Disturb separately to control its alerts.
Focus mode’s app-level design also lets the rest of the phone continue operating. Navigation, a browser, a notes app, or an authenticator can remain usable if they are not on the paused list. The exact list of selectable apps and the appearance of the pause screen can vary by manufacturer.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.

- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What Do Not Disturb silences
Do Not Disturb is one of Android’s Modes. Google describes Modes, including Do Not Disturb, as tools to “silence your device and to manage when and how you want to be notified.” Instead of making selected apps unusable, Do Not Disturb evaluates incoming interruptions and applies the filters you configure.
Current Android settings organize those filters into three broad areas:
- People: controls which calls, messages, and conversations can interrupt you.
- Apps: determines which apps may send notifications while Do Not Disturb is active.
- Alarms and other interruptions: covers alarms, media, touch sounds, reminders, and calendar events.
You can also control visual disturbances. Depending on the phone and Android version, Do Not Disturb can prevent notifications from appearing over the screen while it is on and can stop the display from turning on when the screen is off.
Calls, messages, and conversations
Do Not Disturb is the setting to use when calls or messages are the main concern. In the People filter, you can decide whether calls are allowed, whether messages or conversations are allowed, and which people can bypass the mode. The available choices differ by device, but the principle is the same: Do Not Disturb can silence most people while preserving an exception for selected contacts or conversation types.

Because these are allow-list controls, check them before relying on Do Not Disturb for sleep or a meeting. A contact, conversation, or repeat-caller rule that you allowed can still interrupt you by design.
Alarms, media, and system sounds
Do Not Disturb can govern more than notification banners. The “Alarms and other interruptions” area may include alarms, media audio, touch sounds, reminders, and calendar events. Decide explicitly which categories should remain audible. Someone who wants a quiet meeting may silence media and touch sounds but allow a calendar reminder; someone preparing for sleep may allow an alarm while blocking messages and app notifications.
Critical system notifications can still appear regardless of these filters. Do Not Disturb reduces interruptions; it is not a guarantee that every Android system message will disappear.
How to configure Do Not Disturb
On Android 14 and newer, the controls are generally found through the Modes settings. Menu names and paths vary, so use the Settings search field for “Do Not Disturb” if the label is not visible.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Modes, then choose Do Not Disturb (some phones place the mode directly under Notifications or Sound and vibration).
- Open Notification filters or the equivalent filter screen.
- Review People and choose the calls, messages, or conversations that may interrupt you.
- Review Apps and decide whether any app notifications should be allowed.
- Open Alarms and other interruptions and set the behavior for alarms, media, touch sounds, reminders, and calendar events.
- Open the visual-interruption controls and choose whether notifications may appear over the screen or wake the display.
- Turn the mode on immediately, set a duration, or create a recurring schedule.
For a quick one-time session, use the Do Not Disturb tile in Quick Settings when available. A duration option can prevent the mode from remaining on indefinitely; the exact choices depend on the phone.
Can you still open apps in Do Not Disturb?
Yes. Do Not Disturb filters interruptions; it does not pause or lock apps. You can open a social app, read an email, or play media while the mode is active. The app may still generate notifications later according to your filter settings, but access to the app itself is not removed.
This is why Do Not Disturb is a poor substitute for Focus mode when the habit you are trying to stop is launching a distracting app. It can make the phone quiet while leaving the distraction one tap away.
Scheduling and temporary exceptions
Both tools can be automated, but they automate different rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Focus mode schedules
Focus mode’s Set a schedule option is based on the apps you selected. A weekday schedule can pause those apps during work or school hours. The exception mechanism is Take a break, which temporarily unpauses the selected apps for the time limit you choose.
Do Not Disturb schedules and durations
Do Not Disturb schedules are based on the interruption policy: who may contact you, which apps may notify you, which categories are audible, and whether visual alerts are permitted. A duration control is useful for a meeting or a nap because it ends the mode automatically. Recurring schedules are useful for regular sleep or commuting periods.
Some phones expose additional Modes scheduling options, while older versions show a simpler “turn on for” duration or separate schedules for sound profiles. Always verify the resulting behavior with a test notification before depending on it.

Which setting should you use?
For concentrated work or study
Choose Focus mode if the principal risk is opening selected distracting apps. Pause the apps that pull your attention, schedule the mode for your working hours, and use Take a break only when a genuine need arises.
Choose Do Not Disturb instead, or in addition only if your requirement is incoming silence: for example, you need calls and messages from most people muted while a specific person or work app remains allowed. Do Not Disturb will not stop you from opening the distracting apps yourself.
For sleep
Do Not Disturb is usually the closer match because sleep requires control over calls, messages, app alerts, alarms, media, and screen activity. Configure the people and apps that may bypass the mode, decide whether alarms and reminders are allowed, and disable visual disturbances that would wake the display.
Focus mode can still be useful before bed if certain apps keep you scrolling, but it does not replace the call, sound, and screen controls in Do Not Disturb.
For meetings and driving
Use Do Not Disturb when the priority is preventing incoming banners, sounds, calls, and screen wake-ups. Set a duration so the mode ends after the meeting or trip. Use Focus mode when you also want selected apps to be inaccessible during that period.
For silencing only certain app notifications
If you want to keep using an app but stop its alerts, Do Not Disturb’s Apps filter is the more suitable tool. Focus mode pauses the selected app itself, so it is excessive when notification suppression is the only goal.

Android settings are not identical across devices. Google notes that settings can vary by phone, and some current Modes steps apply only to Android 14 and newer. A recent phone may use the Modes label and expose separate People, Apps, and Alarms and other interruptions filters. Older Android releases may instead show options such as Total silence, Alarms only, or Priority notifications only.
Manufacturers can move the controls or change their names. Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other phones may place Do Not Disturb under different Settings sections, and the available visual or repeat-caller controls can differ. If a menu described here is missing:

A distracting app still sends something
Confirm that the app is selected in Focus mode, not merely listed in a Do Not Disturb exception. Focus mode suppresses notifications from apps it pauses; an app left off the list remains outside that rule.
A call gets through during Do Not Disturb
Open the People filter and inspect allowed callers, messages, conversations, and any repeat-caller option. The call may be getting through because the contact or category is explicitly permitted.
The screen still lights up
Review Do Not Disturb’s visual-disturbance settings. Silencing sound does not necessarily prevent banners or the display from waking; those behaviors are controlled separately where the device supports them.
An alarm does not behave as expected
Check Alarms and other interruptions. Do Not Disturb can treat alarms separately from app notifications, and older Android versions may use a dedicated “Alarms only” mode. Verify the setting with a short test alarm before using it overnight.

Critical system notifications may still appear even when Do Not Disturb is active. This is expected behavior rather than evidence that every filter failed.
A practical decision rule
Ask what you are trying to remove:
- If the answer is “my access to these particular apps,” use Focus mode.
- If the answer is “calls, messages, alerts, sounds, or screen activity,” use Do Not Disturb.
- If you need both restricted app access and tightly controlled incoming interruptions, configure each mode for its own job and test the resulting exceptions on your specific phone.
Focus mode is an app-access and app-notification control. Do Not Disturb is an interruption policy for the wider device. That difference determines which setting will solve the problem instead of merely making the phone appear quieter.
