Android Earthquake Alerts vs. ShakeAlert: What’s the Difference?

Android Earthquake Alerts and ShakeAlert are related but not the same system. ShakeAlert is the USGS-led earthquake early-warning program that uses seismic instruments and sends ShakeAlert Messages to delivery partners. Android Earthquake Alerts is Google’s phone-based warning service. In California, Oregon, and Washington, Android uses ShakeAlert data; in other supported locations, it can detect earthquakes through a crowdsourced network of Android phone accelerometers.

That distinction explains why the same Android warning screen can represent different detection systems, why having Android alerts does not necessarily mean you are receiving ShakeAlert, and why neither service guarantees advance warning.

What is the difference between Android Earthquake Alerts and ShakeAlert?

ShakeAlert is the upstream earthquake early-warning system. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) operates and develops it for California, Oregon, and Washington, where seismic instruments detect significant earthquakes and generate ShakeAlert Messages. Authorized public and private partners then distribute those messages through cellular networks, apps, websites, radio, television, and automated systems.

Android Earthquake Alerts is a Google service built into supported Android phones. Google can use two different upstream sources:

  • Elsewhere that Android Earthquake Alerts is supported: Google can analyze aggregated vibration reports from stationary Android phones to estimate whether an earthquake is occurring and which nearby phones should be warned.

So “Android earthquake alert” describes the phone experience, while “ShakeAlert” describes a USGS earthquake-detection and message system. They overlap in the three ShakeAlert states but are not interchangeable terms.

How each system detects and distributes an earthquake warning

ShakeAlert: seismic instruments, messages, and delivery partners

ShakeAlert monitors earthquake activity through traditional seismic instruments. When the system identifies a significant event, USGS issues a ShakeAlert Message indicating that strong shaking is expected imminently. That message is not itself a single consumer app. Delivery partners turn it into the warning a person sees or hears.

Depending on location and the partner involved, delivery can use Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), the MyShake app, Google’s Android integration, San Diego’s ShakeReadySD service, or other authorized channels. A phone may therefore receive a ShakeAlert-powered warning without the user installing a dedicated ShakeAlert app.

Android Earthquake Alerts: a crowdsourced phone-sensor network

Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System can use accelerometers already present in Android phones. When a phone is stationary, its sensor may detect vibration. Google analyzes aggregated signals from many devices to estimate whether an earthquake is happening, where it may be centered, and which nearby phones should receive a warning.

This approach allows Android to supplement government alert systems in places without USGS ShakeAlert. It also means that an Android warning outside California, Oregon, or Washington may come from Google’s phone-sensor network rather than from the USGS system.

Why the same Android screen can have different upstream data

Android presents a common notification experience, but the upstream source depends on your location. In a ShakeAlert state, Google’s Android integration is powered by ShakeAlert. In another supported country, region, or U.S. state, Google may rely on its own Android Earthquake Alerts System. The interface alone does not identify which detection network produced a particular warning.

Google’s October 15, 2026 product update also reported more than one billion Android earthquake alerts sent since the service launched in 2021. That is a global service figure, not a measurement of ShakeAlert performance or a guarantee that every earthquake will generate an alert.

Does Android use ShakeAlert?

Yes, but only in the ShakeAlert-authorized states. Android’s earthquake alerts in California, Oregon, and Washington are based on ShakeAlert data. Google has described this integration as a partnership with USGS, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, and the ShakeAlert system.

Outside those states, an Android alert can be generated by Google’s own crowdsourced phone-sensor network. Saying that every Android earthquake alert is “a ShakeAlert” is therefore inaccurate. The correct description is that Android is one ShakeAlert delivery channel in the three-state program and an independent detection-and-warning service elsewhere it is supported.

What do “Be Aware,” “Be Ready,” and “Take Action” mean?

Google’s October 2026 Android update describes three alert levels. The labels communicate the expected severity of shaking, not a promise about the exact magnitude or the amount of warning time available.

Android label What it indicates What to do
Be Aware Light shaking is estimated; an earthquake was detected nearby Pay attention to the warning and be ready to protect yourself if shaking increases
Be Ready Stronger shaking is estimated Prepare to take protective action and review the safety guidance shown on the phone
Take Action Moderate to heavy shaking is estimated Follow the immediate full-screen safety instructions, such as Drop, Cover, and Hold On

Google’s earlier U.S. rollout described “Be Aware” and “Take Action” alerts for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater. Because labels and thresholds can change during staged software rollouts, an older article or screenshot may not match the controls or wording on your phone. The current alert shown by your device is the one to follow.

How to turn on Android earthquake alerts

Earthquake alerts are on by default where the feature is supported, but verify the setting before relying on it.

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
  2. Tap Safety & emergency.
  3. Tap Earthquake alerts.
  4. Review the switch and turn alerts on if they are disabled.
  5. Keep Wi-Fi or mobile data available. Android Help lists an internet connection as a requirement for receiving the service.

The exact menu wording can vary by Android version, manufacturer, language, or region. If “Earthquake alerts” is missing, your phone, software version, network, or location may not currently support the feature. A missing menu does not mean that ShakeAlert itself is unavailable; ShakeAlert warnings can also be delivered through WEA and other authorized partners.

Compatibility and settings checks

A supported country alone is not enough. You need a compatible Android phone with working accelerometer hardware, current system software, and an internet connection. Keep mobile data or Wi-Fi enabled, allow emergency notifications, and avoid placing the phone in a mode that suppresses urgent alerts. Menu names and available controls differ among manufacturers and Android releases, so search Settings for “earthquake” if the Safety & emergency page is organized differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If alerts do not appear, first confirm that the feature is listed and enabled, then check connectivity, location permissions, notification permissions, battery-saving restrictions, and whether the device is powered on. A phone that is offline, has no usable data connection, or is outside the supported area cannot be expected to receive the built-in service. These checks do not change ShakeAlert’s upstream detection; they affect whether your particular phone can receive a delivered message.

Do you need the MyShake app if you have an Android phone?

Not necessarily. In California, Oregon, and Washington, Google’s built-in Android integration is one authorized way to receive ShakeAlert-based warnings. MyShake is another ShakeAlert delivery route, so installing it is optional for someone who already has working Android alerts and wants only the built-in phone warning.

Installing an additional authorized app can provide a separate delivery path, but it does not change the underlying earthquake detection or guarantee more warning time. Keep the app’s requirements, notification permissions, and connectivity in mind if you choose that route.

Do not confuse MyShake or Android earthquake alerts with the USGS Earthquake Notification Service (ENS). ENS sends customizable email or text notifications after earthquakes occur in an area you select. USGS explicitly states that ENS is not an early-warning system, although the service itself is free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens near a state border?

Routing follows the system authorized for the phone’s location. Android Help explains that when an event crosses state borders, a device receives alerts from the system authorized for that state. A person traveling between California, Oregon, Washington, and another state may therefore see different upstream behavior without changing phones or settings.

That border rule is another reason not to infer the source solely from the Android design. Two people watching the same earthquake can receive Android warnings generated from different paths, depending on where each phone is located and which service is authorized there.

Why did an Android earthquake alert arrive after the shaking?

An alert can arrive before, during, or after shaking begins. Neither Google nor USGS promises that every recipient will receive advance notice.

  • Detection takes time: The system must detect an event, estimate its location and shaking, and decide which devices or delivery channels to notify.
  • Your location matters: A phone close to the source may begin shaking before there is enough information to issue a warning. A phone farther away may receive useful notice earlier.
  • Connectivity can delay delivery: Android requires Wi-Fi or mobile data for its alert service. Congestion, weak signal, disabled data, or a device that is offline can prevent or delay the notification.
  • Not every earthquake is detected: Google says earthquakes may be missed, and magnitude and shaking estimates can contain errors.
  • Warnings are estimates: The alert describes expected shaking, not a guaranteed intensity at your exact address.

An alert that arrives during or after shaking is therefore not proof that the service failed. It may reflect the event’s location, the time needed to confirm the signal, or the phone’s connection. It is an opportunity to take protective action, not a guaranteed countdown.

Android Earthquake Alerts and ShakeAlert compared

Comparison point Android Earthquake Alerts ShakeAlert
Who operates the core service? Google operates the Android alert service USGS operates and develops the U.S. earthquake early-warning system with regional and delivery partners
Primary data in the three ShakeAlert states ShakeAlert Messages integrated into Android Seismic instruments feeding the ShakeAlert system
Primary data elsewhere the service is active Aggregated signals from stationary Android phone accelerometers Not the upstream source for Android alerts outside its current authorized states
Geographic scope More than 200 countries and regions as reported by Google on October 15, 2026; U.S. rollout previously described all 50 states and six territories California, Oregon, and Washington in the current U.S. program
How a consumer receives it Built-in Android notification, including full-screen instructions for the highest level WEA, MyShake, Android integration, ShakeReadySD, and other authorized partners
Connection requirement Compatible Android phone plus Wi-Fi or mobile data Depends on the delivery partner; ShakeAlert itself is a message system rather than one consumer app
Warning certainty Not all earthquakes are detected; estimates can be wrong; timing may be before, during, or after shaking Designed to warn that strong shaking is expected imminently; no universal warning-time guarantee is stated

What information does Android use about your location?

Android uses your approximate location to decide which devices are close enough to an estimated earthquake to receive an alert. Google says coarse locations are not used to identify or locate a specific user. The service still needs location and connectivity conditions that allow it to target nearby phones, so review your phone’s location, data, and emergency-notification permissions if alerts do not appear.

Location targeting also explains why two phones in the same building can receive different warnings. Their reported locations, connectivity, software, notification permissions, or eligibility for the estimated shaking area may differ.

What should you do when an alert appears?

  1. Read the alert level and the safety instruction displayed on screen.
  2. If shaking starts or the alert instructs immediate action, Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Move away from windows and objects that can fall when it is safe to do so.
  3. Do not wait for a second notification or assume that a lower-level alert guarantees the shaking will remain light.
  4. After the immediate danger, check household members and follow local emergency instructions.

Preparedness supplies are separate from both warning systems. USGS preparedness guidance recommends organizing disaster supplies. An emergency kit can help after an earthquake, but it does not improve detection accuracy, alert delivery, or warning time. Include basics appropriate for your household and review the kit periodically; preparedness is useful whether or not a warning arrives.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Which service should you rely on?

Use every authorized warning channel available in your location. In California, Oregon, and Washington, keep Android earthquake alerts enabled and consider other official ShakeAlert delivery routes that fit your needs. Elsewhere, Android’s built-in service may be the available phone-based option, but verify that your country or region is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat one enabled setting as a guarantee of coverage. Maintain mobile data or Wi-Fi, keep the phone charged, allow emergency notifications, and follow local earthquake-preparedness guidance. The practical distinction is simple: ShakeAlert is the USGS warning infrastructure; Android Earthquake Alerts is Google’s delivery and, in many places, detection layer.
