Android Earthquake Alerts Not Working? Fix Missing or Delayed Notifications

If your Android phone did not warn you, first open Settings > Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts (or Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts), then turn on Wi‑Fi or mobile data and Location. Earthquake Alerts depend on internet connectivity, enabled location, geographic support and successful earthquake detection, so a missed or late warning does not automatically mean your phone is broken.

What Android Earthquake Alerts do—and why one can be missed

Android Earthquake Alerts is a built-in warning service that uses Android phones to detect earthquake-like shaking and sends a notification to devices in the affected area. Google says alerts are enabled by default where the service is supported, but the switch can be changed manually. The service uses your approximate location to determine whether your phone should receive a warning.

Three limits explain most complaints:

  • Connectivity: the phone needs Wi‑Fi or cellular-data connectivity to receive an internet-delivered alert.
  • Location: Location must be enabled so the system can identify the relevant area.
  • Detection and coverage: Earthquake Alerts are not available everywhere, and not every earthquake can be detected. Magnitude and shaking-intensity estimates can also be wrong.

Google cautions that you may receive an alert before shaking starts, while shaking is happening, or after it begins. A late message can therefore be a timing limitation rather than a notification failure.

Google announced in 2026 that the system covered more than 200 regions and had sent more than one billion alerts since launching in 2021. That global figure does not mean every country, phone or earthquake is covered; support remains location-dependent.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Run this quick fix sequence first

  1. Open the Earthquake alerts control. Go to Settings > Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts. If that page is not present, try Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts.
  2. Turn Earthquake alerts on. If the switch is already on, turn it off, wait a few seconds and turn it on again.
  3. Restore an internet connection. Enable Wi‑Fi or mobile data. Wi‑Fi alone is sufficient if it has working internet access; mobile data is not mandatory when you are connected to usable Wi‑Fi.
  4. Enable Location. Turn on the device-wide Location setting. Earthquake Alerts use approximate location to decide which devices should be warned.
  5. Confirm that your country or region is supported. The service is not available in all areas. Check Google’s current supported-country information for the country where the phone is being used.
  6. Inspect Wireless Emergency Alerts separately. Open Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts. Review enabled categories, sound, vibration, notification history and test-alert controls. The exact labels can differ by manufacturer and Android release.
  7. Check what actually happened. If an alert arrived before, during or after shaking, that timing can be consistent with the service’s design. If no alert arrived, continue with the coverage and detection checks below.
  8. Keep official warning channels active. Android Earthquake Alerts are supplemental. Continue using government and carrier warning systems and follow local emergency instructions.

Find and verify the correct Android setting

Primary path: Safety & emergency

On many current Android phones, open Settings, select Safety & emergency, then tap Earthquake alerts. The page normally contains a single on/off control and explanatory text. Switch it on, then return to the previous screen rather than using a back gesture that may discard an unsaved change on a heavily customized interface.

If you cannot find the option, use the Settings search field and search for Earthquake alerts. Search results can reveal the feature even when a manufacturer has placed it in a different section.

Fallback path: Location settings

Some Android releases place the control under Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. Open the control there and confirm that the main Location switch is also enabled. A disabled Location switch can prevent the service from determining whether your device is in the affected area.

When the menu is absent

An absent menu is not proof of a damaged phone. The feature may not be offered in the phone’s current country or region, may be hidden by a manufacturer’s software build, or may not be included in that Android release. Check the country in which the phone is currently operating, install any normally offered system update, restart the phone, and search both setting paths again. If the menu remains absent, treat geographic or software availability as the leading explanation rather than repeatedly resetting notification preferences.

  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Connectivity: does Earthquake Alerts work without mobile data?

It can work without mobile data when the phone has a functioning Wi‑Fi connection. Google’s guidance requires Wi‑Fi and/or cellular-data connectivity, so the essential requirement is an internet path, not specifically a cellular plan.

Wi‑Fi-only situations

A phone connected to home, office or public Wi‑Fi can receive the alert while cellular data is disabled, provided the Wi‑Fi network actually reaches the internet. A Wi‑Fi icon alone does not prove that internet access is available; captive-portal pages, expired logins and outages can leave the device connected but unable to receive cloud notifications.

When neither Wi‑Fi nor data is available

With both Wi‑Fi and mobile data turned off, or when the phone has no working internet connection, Android Earthquake Alerts cannot deliver its internet-based notification. Re-enable at least one connection before troubleshooting other settings.

Airplane mode and restricted connections

Airplane mode commonly disables the network connections that alerts need. If you use Airplane mode, verify that an active Wi‑Fi connection has been deliberately re-enabled and is providing internet access. Do not assume that a saved network name means the phone is online.

Location and geographic support checks

Enable device Location

Open Settings > Location and turn on the main Location control. Android Earthquake Alerts use approximate location, not a request for a precise address, to determine which devices should receive an alert. If Location is off, the service may not know that the phone is in an affected area.

Check the phone’s current country

Support is country- and region-dependent. Google states that “Earthquake alerts aren’t supported in all areas.” A phone purchased in a supported country may not receive the service when it is being used elsewhere, and a supported-country list can change as coverage expands. Compare the phone’s present location with Google’s current list rather than relying on the device’s purchase country.

Understand what “more than 200 regions” means

Google’s 2026 announcement says the system now covers more than 200 regions. That is a broad coverage count, not a promise that every location inside every region receives identical warnings. Local rollout, network availability and the event’s distance from the device still affect delivery.

Earthquake Alerts and Wireless Emergency Alerts are different channels

Android’s Earthquake Alerts control is separate from Wireless Emergency Alerts. Wireless Emergency Alerts are government or carrier emergency messages, with their own categories and notification controls. Check them at Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts; manufacturers and Android versions may use slightly different names.

Characteristic Android Earthquake Alerts Wireless Emergency Alerts
Coverage Available only in supported countries and regions; Google says coverage exceeds 200 regions as of its 2026 announcement. Depends on the government and carrier emergency-broadcast systems operating in your area.
Trigger source Android’s earthquake-detection system, using participating phones and its estimates of magnitude and shaking intensity. Carrier or government emergency-authority messages, including Wireless Emergency Alerts or Emergency Alert System notices.
Connectivity requirement Wi‑Fi and/or cellular-data internet connectivity is required. Delivered through the participating carrier or broadcast emergency channel; availability depends on local network and authority support.
Controls Controlled at Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts or Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. Controlled at Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts, including categories, sound, vibration, history and test-alert options.
Priority and timing May arrive before, during or after shaking, and some events can be missed. Wireless Emergency Alerts and Emergency Alert System messages appear above Earthquake Alerts in the notification priority order.

Because the channels are independent, turning on Wireless Emergency Alerts does not turn on Android Earthquake Alerts, and enabling Earthquake Alerts does not replace government or carrier warnings. Keep both available when your local systems support them.

Diagnose the symptom you saw

No alert and no notification history entry

First verify the Earthquake alerts switch, Location and an active Wi‑Fi or data connection. Then check whether the location is supported. If all four conditions are satisfied, the event may not have been detected, may have fallen outside the service’s coverage or may not have been estimated as strong enough to trigger a warning. Google explicitly says not all earthquakes can be detected.

An alert arrived after shaking started

This can be normal. Google says an alert may arrive before, during or after shaking begins. Detection, estimation and network delivery take time, and the system may not have enough information to warn every device in advance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The alert appeared but made little or no sound

Open Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts and inspect sound and vibration controls, then review notification history. Those controls apply to Wireless Emergency Alerts and may not be identical to the Earthquake Alerts behavior on your device. Menu names and available controls vary by manufacturer and Android release.

The Earthquake alerts page is missing

Try both documented setting paths and the Settings search field. If the page is still absent, check whether the phone is in a supported country or region and whether its software is current. An unsupported location or software build is more likely than a damaged notification subsystem.

You received a warning for weak or no shaking

Magnitude and shaking-intensity estimates can contain errors. The system may warn devices based on an estimate that differs from what you personally felt, especially near the edge of the affected area. Treat the alert as a prompt to protect yourself and check official instructions, not as a precise measurement of the shaking at your exact position.

Only government alerts appear

Wireless Emergency Alerts and Emergency Alert System messages have higher notification priority than Earthquake Alerts. Seeing one channel while not seeing the other does not indicate that the phone’s entire emergency-notification system has failed. Check each channel’s separate switch and settings.

Why a warning can be early, simultaneous or late

An earthquake begins at its source and the resulting waves travel outward. An alert system must detect the event, estimate its size and affected area, select devices and deliver a message over available networks. A device close to the source may receive little or no advance time, while a farther device may receive a warning before strong shaking arrives.

Network congestion, a weak internet path, disabled connectivity or a phone outside the estimated area can reduce the practical warning time. Even with every setting correct, the service cannot promise an advance alert for every earthquake. The documented timing range is before, during or after shaking.

Safe actions when an alert arrives—or does not

If an alert arrives

  • Follow the emergency instructions shown in the notification and those issued by local authorities.
  • Protect yourself immediately according to local earthquake guidance; do not wait for a second notification.
  • Expect aftershocks and check for hazards such as broken glass, falling objects, fire or damaged utilities.

If shaking starts without an alert

  • Take protective action immediately; do not spend time reopening settings.
  • After the shaking, check Wi‑Fi or mobile data, Location and the Earthquake alerts switch.
  • Consult government emergency channels for instructions and updates.

Android describes Earthquake Alerts as supplemental. Keep official government and carrier warning channels active because they can provide information that the Android service does not, and because any detection system can miss an event.

Final troubleshooting checklist

  • Earthquake alerts switch is on.
  • Location is enabled.
  • Wi‑Fi or mobile data has working internet access.
  • The phone is in a supported country or region.
  • Wireless Emergency Alerts are reviewed separately.
  • Notification history and sound/vibration settings have been checked.
  • You understand that an alert can arrive before, during or after shaking.
  • You understand that not every earthquake is detected and estimates can be wrong.
  • Government and carrier emergency channels remain enabled.

If every item is satisfied and a particular earthquake still produced no alert, the most likely explanations are geographic coverage, detection limits, an inaccurate estimate or insufficient warning time—not necessarily a defective phone.
