The feature is enabled by default where it is supported. It needs an Android phone with compatible Google Play services, device location and an internet connection through Wi-Fi or mobile data. It is designed to supplement—not replace—government emergency alerts and official earthquake guidance.

What Android Earthquake Alerts are
Android Earthquake Alerts is a built-in safety feature that attempts to warn people near an earthquake. Google’s public guidance says the service generally targets earthquakes estimated at magnitude 4.5 or above. That threshold is an estimate used to decide whether a warning should be sent; it is not a promise that every event at that size will trigger an alert or that smaller earthquakes will always be ignored.
Where the feature is active, alerts are normally switched on automatically. A compatible phone must have Google Play services, device location enabled and Wi-Fi or mobile data available. Exact behavior varies with the phone model, Android software build, country, Google Play services version and network conditions.

How the warning system works
Two systems serve different regions
Google describes two sources for Android earthquake warnings. In California, Oregon and Washington, Android can deliver warnings from the US Geological Survey’s ShakeAlert system. ShakeAlert is based on data from a dedicated seismic sensor network. In other supported areas, Google operates the Android Earthquake Alerts System, which uses motion sensors in participating Android phones to detect likely earthquake shaking and estimate where it is occurring.
Phone accelerometers measure changes in movement. When many devices report a similar pattern, Google’s processing can estimate an event’s location, magnitude and expected shaking area, then target phones in that area. An alert may be issued while the event is still developing, so the first estimate can change as more data arrives.
Location targeting is intentionally coarse
Google says it uses approximate or coarse location to determine which devices should receive an alert. Its documentation states that these coarse locations are used to select alert recipients and are not used to identify or locate a specific user. The system therefore needs enough location information to decide whether a phone is near the estimated earthquake, but it is not presented as a precision-tracking feature.

Are Android earthquake alerts accurate?
They can be valuable, but accuracy is conditional rather than guaranteed. Google says its measured performance has been similar to established seismic networks in some evaluations and, in some cases, better. That is a Google-reported technical claim, not an independent accuracy score that applies to every earthquake, country or phone.
Google does not publish one universal percentage for alert accuracy in its consumer help material. Accuracy and usefulness depend on the event, the phone and the communications path. A nearby, larger earthquake with strong participation and reliable connectivity gives the system more information than a small or distant event detected by fewer phones.

What the timing warnings mean
Google lists three timing possibilities: an alert can arrive before shaking begins, while shaking is already happening, or after shaking has started. The warning is not a prediction of an earthquake; it is a rapid estimate made after ground motion has been detected. Phones closest to the source may feel shaking before an alert can reach them, while phones farther away may receive several seconds of warning.
Network delay, weak mobile coverage, disabled data, a phone that is powered off, or an event that is not detected can eliminate useful warning time. A late alert does not necessarily mean the system failed to detect the earthquake; it may reflect the distance to the source and the time required to estimate the event and deliver the message.
Events the system can miss or misjudge
- Not all earthquakes are detected.
- Magnitude estimates can contain errors.
- Shaking-intensity estimates can contain errors.
- An earthquake may occur outside a supported area or outside the service’s current coverage.
- A phone may not receive a message if location, data connectivity or required Google services are unavailable.
For these reasons, treat the alert as an additional source of time to take protective action, not as proof that an earthquake is occurring or as a guarantee that no alert means no danger.
Does the feature replace government warnings?
No. Android alerts should supplement official government systems, emergency broadcasts and local instructions. In California, Oregon and Washington, the Android notification can carry ShakeAlert information, but it remains a delivery channel on your phone rather than a replacement for public-safety agencies.
Keep government emergency alerts enabled, follow local earthquake guidance and use the standard protective response: drop to the ground, cover your head and neck under sturdy furniture if possible, and hold on until shaking stops. If officials issue evacuation or other instructions, follow those instructions even if an Android alert did not appear.

Does Google track my location for earthquake alerts?
Android uses location information for two separate purposes: selecting phones that should receive a nearby-earthquake warning and, where enabled, contributing sensor information that helps detect shaking. Google describes the alert-targeting location as approximate or coarse and says it is not used to identify or locate a specific user.

What happens if Location Accuracy is off
Google’s documentation says turning off Google Location Accuracy stops the phone from contributing to earthquake detection. The phone may still have other location functions, but it will not provide the same location-assisted contribution to the crowdsourced detection system.
What happens if device Location is off
Turning off the phone’s device Location prevents it from receiving nearby-earthquake alerts, according to Google’s help guidance. This is separate from the broader privacy controls for individual apps and services: the alert feature needs device-level location available to determine whether the phone is in the affected area.
Other information handled by Google Play services
Google’s Location Accuracy documentation says location data can be used without identifying specific individuals to maintain a crowdsourced wireless-signal database and improve location-based services, including earthquake detection. Google Play services documentation also says safety and emergency features may use information such as battery level and Wi-Fi details under Google’s Privacy Policy. That statement describes information handling for safety services; it is not a claim that Google is continuously monitoring your exact position or measuring a particular amount of battery drain.
Do Android earthquake alerts drain battery?
There is no official battery-drain percentage, controlled test result or comparison published in the documentation covered here. The mention of battery level in Google Play services material concerns information that may be collected for safety and emergency services; it does not quantify power consumption.

Because the feature is integrated with Android and Google Play services rather than running as a conventional, constantly open app, its battery impact cannot be inferred from the alert setting alone. It also varies by phone hardware, Android version, signal conditions and other services using location or sensors. If battery life is a priority, review the phone’s Battery usage screen after normal use instead of relying on an unsupported percentage claim.
Where are Android earthquake alerts available?
Availability is country- and region-specific and can change. Google’s October 2026 announcement said the service had expanded to more than 200 regions. That headline does not mean every feature works identically in every region, and it does not establish support for every territory or handset model.
Google’s Android Help country list is the authoritative place to check current availability before relying on the feature. A phone can show an Earthquake alerts setting yet still be unable to receive warnings if the country is unsupported, Google Play services are incompatible or network access is unavailable.

How to turn earthquake alerts on or off
The menu wording differs slightly between Android versions and manufacturers. Google documents these paths:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety and emergency.
- Choose Earthquake alerts.
- Use the switch to enable or disable alerts.
On some phones, the path is Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. If neither path appears, update Google Play services and the phone software, confirm that the country is supported, and search Settings for “earthquake.” A missing switch can indicate that the feature is unavailable for that device or region rather than a hidden fault.

Requirements for receiving an alert
- Wi-Fi or mobile data must be turned on.
- Device Location must be enabled.
- The phone must be in a supported country or region.
- Google Play services must be installed and functioning.
- The device must be powered on and able to communicate with the network.
Google Play services documentation notes that some safety and emergency features work only on Android 9 and newer. Support can still differ by manufacturer, software build and region, so the Android version number alone is not a guarantee.
Troubleshooting missing or unexpected alerts
You did not receive an alert during an earthquake
- Check whether the country and region are on Google’s current supported list.
- Confirm that Earthquake alerts are enabled in Settings.
- Verify that device Location and mobile data or Wi-Fi were enabled at the time.
- Check that Google Play services is updated and not disabled.
- Remember that Google says not all earthquakes are detected and that an alert can be late or absent.
You received an alert but felt no shaking
The notification is based on an estimate of magnitude and expected shaking. Estimates can contain errors, and the event may be farther away or weaker at your location than the first calculation suggested. An alert is not confirmation that damaging shaking will occur where you are.
The setting is unavailable
Look for the alternate menu path under Location, install available Android and Google Play services updates, and check regional support. If the feature remains absent, the phone, software build or location may not be eligible. Do not install an unknown “earthquake alert” app merely to reproduce a system setting; use official local warning channels when Android support is unavailable.

Use the notification as a prompt to act immediately, not as a measurement you can debate while shaking is underway. If an alert arrives, protect yourself first. If no alert arrives, do not assume conditions are safe: earthquakes can be undetected, outside coverage or too close to the source for advance notice.
The safest arrangement is layered protection: keep Android alerts enabled where supported, leave government emergency notifications on, maintain a basic earthquake plan, and know how to shut off gas or electricity only if local authorities advise it. Android’s service can add warning time, but no phone-based system removes the need for preparation.
