Then check whether audio is routed to Bluetooth, inspect the phone’s receiver for an obstruction, and compare calls in another place. These checks help separate a simple setting or coverage issue from a phone fault.
1. Raise call volume during an active call
Call volume is separate from media and ringtone volume. While connected to a call, press the phone’s Volume Up button. If an expanded volume panel appears, raise the call slider—not the media or ring slider. Google Android Help defines call volume as the volume of the other person during a call: Change volume, sound, & vibrate settings. Samsung likewise says in-call volume can be adjusted only while on a call.

2. Check where the call audio is routed
A phone may send call audio to paired earbuds, a headset, or a car system instead of its receiver. During the call, use the audio-output control to select the phone, or briefly turn Bluetooth off to see whether sound returns. You can also inspect the accessory under Settings > Connected devices and check whether its Phone audio option is enabled. Menu labels vary by Android device.
Google’s Connect through Bluetooth on your Android device guidance notes that not every car supports making or receiving calls over Bluetooth. If you are using earbuds, confirm that they are connected for phone-call audio, worn correctly, and not muted. Fit, connection stability, sound settings, and surroundings can affect call quality; some of Samsung’s specific advice applies to Galaxy Buds and should not be assumed to describe every headset. 3. Inspect the receiver, case, and sound settings
If the problem occurs when listening through the phone itself, check that the small earpiece receiver at the top of the phone is not covered by a case, film, dirt, or another obstruction. On Galaxy phones, Samsung warns that an ill-fitting third-party screen protector can block the top receiver. Remove a film that covers it or replace it with one designed for the exact phone model; receiver and vent locations differ across devices. Samsung’s instructions are in Fix low or no sound during calls on your Samsung Galaxy device.
For a Galaxy phone, also check whether Accessibility > Hearing enhancements > Mute all sounds is enabled. The path can vary with the model and software version.

4. Compare calls, contacts, and locations
If sound fails only sometimes or in one place, end the call and try again, then test from another location or at another time. Try a different contact as well. A temporary connection or coverage problem may affect a particular call or area; Samsung identifies surroundings and coverage as possible reasons for location-specific call trouble in its Galaxy call-audio troubleshooting guidance.
If every call is affected, note whether the problem began after adding an accessory or calling app, or after the phone was dropped or exposed to liquid. Remove a newly added case or accessory and test again. These comparisons can help narrow down whether the issue follows the phone, an accessory, a particular call, or a location; they are troubleshooting clues, not a definitive diagnostic test.

5. Check for a microphone problem without confusing it with receiver audio
If the other person also says they cannot hear you, the microphone may be involved. Samsung recommends making a short recording in Voice Recorder or Camera and playing it back on a Galaxy phone. A clear recording is evidence that the microphone is working normally, but it does not prove that the incoming-call receiver is functioning correctly. Follow Samsung’s Microphone issues with Galaxy phone or tablet guidance for the model.
If the phone got wet, Samsung advises drying it with a clean, soft cloth and letting it air-dry. Do not put tools into openings or use compressed air; Samsung warns that compressed-air cans can damage the device.

6. Escalate persistent problems safely
For a Galaxy phone, Samsung’s Safe mode can help check whether a downloaded app is causing an audio issue. Use the official instructions for your specific model. Do not start with a factory reset: it erases data, and simpler checks should come first. If call audio remains faulty—especially after a drop or liquid exposure—contact the phone manufacturer or arrange service. If the phone works normally in other respects but cellular calling problems persist after device troubleshooting, contact your carrier.

For other Android brands, use the manufacturer’s own diagnostics and service guidance because menu names and repair routes vary. A problem following physical damage is a stronger reason to seek device service than one limited to a particular location or call.
