Android built-in features: four utility apps you can replace today

Before installing another utility app, test the tools already on your Android phone. Gallery or Google Photos can handle routine edits, the camera can often read QR codes, Drive or Files by Google can scan paperwork, Quick Share replaces nearby-transfer apps, and Files by Google provides practical storage cleanup. These built-ins are not universal replacements: support varies by Android version, manufacturer, model and region, and professional editing, advanced OCR or specialized sharing can still require dedicated software.

What Android now handles without extra utility apps

Android’s default apps have absorbed many jobs that once required separate downloads. The result is fewer permissions to review, fewer accounts and cloud destinations to manage, and less duplicated storage. The trade-off is that built-in tools generally target common, occasional tasks rather than specialist workflows.

Everyday job Built-in option What it covers When a dedicated app still helps
Photo touch-ups Gallery or Google Photos Crop, rotate, filters, brightness, contrast, background removal and supported AI edits RAW processing, layer-based work, demanding colour control or professional delivery
QR codes Stock Camera or Quick Settings QR scanner Recognising a code and opening its link Your camera and Quick Settings both lack QR support, or you need a specialist workflow
Paper documents Google Drive, Files by Google or supported Pixel Camera Multi-page scans, crop, rotate, colour or grayscale adjustment, cleanup and PDF/JPG export Advanced OCR, batch processing, compliance controls or complex cloud integrations
Nearby transfers Quick Share Sending multiple files between nearby Android devices, with status notifications and QR fallback Cross-platform or remote transfers that need a different protocol or service
Storage review Files by Google Junk, duplicates, screenshots, large or recommended files and unused apps Organisational, enterprise or recovery features beyond normal housekeeping

Availability is conditional, not guaranteed. A missing button can indicate unsupported hardware or software rather than a mistake in your settings. Check the phone maker’s app version and Android release before assuming a feature has been removed.

1. Replace routine photo-editing apps with Gallery or Google Photos

For family pictures, social posts and quick corrections, the editor already installed on the phone is usually enough. The source workflow that once relied on several separate editors—one for filters, another for retouching and another for adjustments—can now be done in Gallery or Google Photos on many devices.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What the built-in editor can do

  • Crop and rotate an image to fit a post or straighten a horizon.
  • Apply filters and adjust brightness or contrast.
  • Remove a background or unwanted person on phones that support those tools.
  • Use manufacturer-specific or Google Photos AI editing features where the device and software support them.

The exact controls and names differ. Some manufacturers put editing under Edit in Gallery; Google Photos uses the Edit button and groups adjustments, filters and supported tools there. Saving a copy, when offered, preserves the original so you can undo the change later.

A dependable quick-edit workflow

  1. Open Gallery or Google Photos and select the picture.
  2. Tap Edit, then correct framing with crop or rotate before applying a look.
  3. Adjust brightness and contrast conservatively; inspect skin tones and highlights at full size.
  4. Use background-removal or object-removal tools only if they appear on your device, and check the result around hair, hands and fine edges.
  5. Choose Save copy or the equivalent option when you want the untouched original retained.

Where a specialist editor remains justified

Keep a dedicated editor for professional colour management, RAW files, masks and layers, precise retouching, print preparation or a repeatable batch workflow. Built-in AI features can also be limited by model, region or account, so their absence is not evidence that the phone is malfunctioning. For ordinary brightness, cropping and filters, however, an additional editor adds installation and storage overhead without solving a problem you have.

2. Stop installing a QR scanner before testing the camera

Many Android cameras recognise a QR code automatically. Point the camera at the code, wait for the detection banner or link, and tap it only after checking that the destination looks trustworthy. Google notes that QR recognition in the default camera varies by device model, so this is a test rather than a promise of universal support.

Try the stock camera first

  1. Open the phone’s default Camera app.
  2. Frame the entire QR code in good light without pressing the shutter.
  3. Hold steady until a banner, link or icon appears.
  4. Review the displayed address before opening it; a QR code can lead anywhere on the web.

If nothing appears, open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen and look for QR scanner or a similarly named tile. The tile may exist even when the camera does not recognise codes. You can edit the Quick Settings layout to add it if the phone exposes the feature.

When a scanner app is still reasonable

Install a separate scanner only when both the camera and Quick Settings lack support, or when your work requires a particular history, export or enterprise control. Avoid apps that demand unrelated permissions, and remove a scanner you no longer need. QR support can change after a system or camera update, so retest after major software changes.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Scan receipts and paperwork with Drive, Files by Google or Pixel Camera

Document scanning is a separate task from reading a QR code. Google Drive for Android can turn receipts, letters and billing statements into scans, while Files by Google can create searchable PDFs. Supported Pixel phones can also show a document-scan prompt in Pixel Camera. These options cover the normal “scan, clean up and send” job without a CamScanner-style download.

Google Drive: a multi-page PDF workflow

  1. Open the Google Drive app and tap the camera or scan control, depending on the app version.
  2. Capture the first page with the document inside the frame.
  3. Use the editing controls to crop or rotate it, choose colour or grayscale, and clean marks such as stains or fingers when available.
  4. Add another page, or delete and retake a page that is blurred or clipped.
  5. Save the finished scan as a PDF or JPG in the chosen Drive location.

Use a flat, contrasting surface and even light. Keep the phone parallel to the page to reduce perspective distortion, and check every page before sharing the file.

Files by Google: searchable PDFs and a Scanned folder

Files by Google can scan documents into searchable PDFs, remove unwanted objects, combine pages and place the result in a Scanned folder. The exact scan button may appear in the app’s categories or action area. After capture, review the page order and the text recognition before relying on the PDF for a search or record.

Google describes the feature this way: “You can quickly scan documents in Files by Google and save them as searchable PDFs.”

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

Pixel Camera prompt

On supported Pixel phones, Pixel Camera may recognise a document in view and offer a scan prompt. Follow that prompt to create a document image, then verify the crop and readability. The prompt is model- and software-dependent, so its absence does not indicate a camera fault.

Limits of built-in scanning

Dedicated scanning software can still be worthwhile for high-volume batches, specialised OCR languages, automated naming, regulated retention, direct business-system integrations or strict compliance requirements. Built-in scanning is best for a handful of receipts, forms, letters or invoices where a clean PDF or JPG is the goal.

4. Share nearby files with Quick Share instead of transfer utilities

Quick Share is Android’s integrated way to send files to nearby devices from the share menu or Files by Google. Google documents multi-file selection, transfer-status notifications, a QR-code fallback and availability on Android 6 and later. Some Galaxy settings and simultaneous-sharing behaviours differ by model, so the menus may not look identical on every phone.

Send files from the share menu

  1. Open Gallery, Files by Google or the app containing the files.
  2. Select one or more items and tap Share.
  3. Choose Quick Share. If it is not visible, expand the share sheet or check Quick Settings and system settings for the feature.
  4. Select the nearby device when it appears. The recipient may need to unlock the screen or accept the request.
  5. Watch the transfer notification until it reports completion, then open the received file on the other device.

Use QR fallback when discovery fails

When the recipient does not appear, Quick Share can offer a QR-code option. Have the other person scan that code with their camera; this can establish the handoff without waiting for the device list to refresh. Keep both devices nearby, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled if Quick Share requests them.

Google’s description is direct: “With Quick Share, you can immediately send and receive files from nearby devices.”

Compatibility and privacy checks

Android 6 or later is the documented baseline, but current menus and visibility controls depend on the manufacturer and software release. Before sending, confirm the recipient name and the files selected. Review Quick Share’s visibility setting—such as contacts, everyone for a limited time or hidden—so strangers cannot automatically discover your phone. Quick Share is for nearby exchange; it is not a replacement for a remote backup or a link-sharing service.

5. Let Android manage RAM and use Files by Google for storage cleanup

Modern Android manages memory and background processes itself. A RAM-cleaner app that repeatedly kills processes is not necessary for ordinary use, and the reviewed material provides no controlled statistic showing that such an app improves speed or battery life. Closing processes can also make frequently used apps reload, trading one kind of activity for another.

Review storage safely

  1. Open Files by Google and select the Clean section.
  2. Review suggested categories such as junk files, duplicate files, screenshots, large or recommended files and unused apps.
  3. Open each card and inspect the individual items; do not approve a bulk deletion blindly.
  4. Delete only what you no longer need, then empty the relevant trash or bin if the app offers one.

Keep the operating system and frequently used apps updated, and remove downloads or offline media you can easily obtain again. If a particular app is consuming unusual memory, use Android’s app-info screen to inspect its storage and background settings rather than installing a task killer.

What cleanup tools cannot fix

Low storage caused by irreplaceable photos, a failing storage chip, malware or an app with a persistent bug needs a different response. Back up important files, investigate the offending app and use the manufacturer’s support process when the phone reports hardware errors. A cleaner cannot recover deleted data or repair damaged storage.

Keep a dedicated utility when the built-in tool misses a real requirement

Replacing an app is sensible only when the replacement matches the job. Keep specialist software when you need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • RAW photo development, layers, masks, calibrated colour or print output.
  • High-volume document capture, advanced OCR, automated naming, business integrations or compliance retention.
  • Transfers to platforms or devices that Quick Share does not support, especially when the recipient is not nearby.
  • Documented organisational policies that require a particular audit trail or cloud location.

For everyone else, the built-in route usually means a shorter workflow and fewer duplicate copies. Check where Gallery, Photos, Drive and Files save results, because a scan or edited image can still consume local and cloud storage even when no extra app is installed.

A five-minute uninstall checklist

  1. Take one ordinary photo and complete your usual crop, adjustment and export in Gallery or Google Photos.
  2. Test a QR code with the stock camera, then look for a Quick Settings scanner if needed.
  3. Scan a two-page receipt or letter in Drive or Files by Google and confirm the PDF is readable.
  4. Send several files to a nearby device with Quick Share and verify the recipient and completion status.
  5. Open Files by Google’s Clean section, inspect its suggestions and remove only confirmed junk.
  6. Only after these tests, uninstall duplicate utilities and retain any app that handles a requirement the built-in tools cannot.

Bottom line

Android’s Gallery or Photos editor, camera and QR tools, Drive or Files by Google, Quick Share and storage recommendations now cover most routine utility work. Start with those built-ins, confirm what your specific phone supports, and keep specialist apps only for specialist results.
