They control different parts of an Android phone: Night Light changes color temperature, Dark theme changes supported app and system backgrounds, and Do Not Disturb filters interruptions. Bedtime mode can coordinate several of them on a schedule, so you do not have to choose only one.
What each bedtime setting actually controls
These options are often grouped together because they appear in nighttime settings, but they are not interchangeable. Selecting one does not automatically perform the jobs of the others.

Night Light: a warmer display, not a silence switch
Night Light changes the phone’s display color. Google describes it as turning the screen red or amber and reducing blue color, which can make a screen easier to use in dim surroundings. It affects the visual output of the display; it does not change notification behavior, and it does not force every application into a dark interface.
How to schedule Night Light on a Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Select Night Light.
- Tap Schedule, then choose the available start and end times.
On other manufacturers, the same control may be under Display rather than Display & touch, and the wording can differ. If you cannot find it, use the Settings search field for “Night Light” or “blue light.”

When Night Light is the right first step
- You want a less blue, warmer-looking screen while reading or checking a phone in a dark room.
- You are comfortable receiving notifications but want the display itself to feel less stark.
- You want to keep your existing light or dark app theme unchanged.
Night Light is a color adjustment, not proof that the phone is using a lower brightness. If the screen is still uncomfortable, adjust brightness separately; Night Light will not replace that control.
Dark theme: darker supported interfaces
Dark theme changes the color scheme of supported Android system screens and applications. Backgrounds that were white or light become dark when the relevant interface supports the feature. Google notes that Dark theme may save battery on some screens, but the benefit depends on the display and the content being shown. An application that does not support Dark theme cannot provide that benefit through the system switch.
How to turn on or schedule Dark theme
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display or Display & touch.
- Select Dark theme.
- Turn it on immediately, or open its scheduling option.
Pixel documentation lists custom times, sunset to sunrise, and at bedtime as scheduling choices. The exact choices depend on the Android release and device. Google specifically documents linking Dark theme to Bedtime mode on Android 13 and later.
Why some apps stay light
Dark theme is not a universal repainting command. An app may not support Android’s system theme, may support it only on certain screens, or may have its own appearance setting. If one app remains light, open that app’s settings and look for options such as Theme, Appearance, or Dark mode. If no such option exists, the app may simply not support a dark interface.

Do Not Disturb: notification and interruption control
Do Not Disturb (DND) manages interruptions rather than screen appearance. It can silence the device according to notification filters and schedules. Depending on the filters you choose, calls, messages, reminders, media controls, conversations or other alerts can be allowed or blocked.
Quick toggle versus a scheduled rule
For a one-off quiet period, swipe down to open Quick Settings and tap Do Not Disturb. For recurring bedtime control, open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb on Android versions that use the Modes menu, then edit the schedule and notification filters.
DND does not recolor the screen, turn a light app dark, dim the wallpaper, or switch off an always-on display by itself. Those are separate screen or Bedtime mode controls. A phone can therefore be in DND while still showing a bright, light-themed interface.
Bedtime mode coordinates the settings
Bedtime mode is the umbrella option for people who want a repeatable nighttime routine instead of manually changing several switches. Google documents routines that can run on a schedule or while the phone is charging. Available actions can include:

- Do Not Disturb to manage notifications and interruptions.
- Grayscale to remove color from the display.
- Keep the screen dark to avoid the display lighting up during the routine.
- Dim the wallpaper to reduce visual brightness behind icons.
- Dark theme for supported system and app interfaces.
On supported Pixel phones, Dark theme can be scheduled to turn on when Bedtime mode is active. Bedtime mode may be found through Digital Wellbeing or through Modes, depending on the Android version.
Set up a scheduled Bedtime routine
- Open Settings and enter Digital Wellbeing or Modes.
- Open Bedtime mode.
- Choose a recurring time schedule, or select the option to turn it on while charging if your device provides it.
- Review the available screen and notification actions.
- Enable only the changes you want, such as DND, Dark theme, grayscale, a dark screen and a dimmed wallpaper.
- Save the routine, then check the next scheduled start time shown by the phone.
Because manufacturers expose different controls, one phone may offer every action listed above while another offers only some of them. The routine can still be useful even if Dark theme or wallpaper dimming is unavailable.
Choose the setting by the problem you are trying to fix
If the screen looks harsh or bluish
Start with Night Light. Set a schedule that begins when the room becomes dim, and adjust the intensity if your phone offers an intensity slider. Keep in mind that Night Light changes color rather than notification behavior or app backgrounds.
If white app backgrounds are the problem
Use Dark theme and check the individual settings of apps that remain light. Scheduling Dark theme for a custom time, sunset to sunrise, or bedtime can avoid daily manual changes when your device supports those choices.

If incoming alerts wake or distract you
Use Do Not Disturb. Configure its notification filters instead of assuming that the default rule matches your needs. For example, you may want most alerts silenced while allowing selected people or urgent categories, if those filter controls are offered by your Android version.
If you want a complete automatic routine
Use Bedtime mode as the coordinator, then select DND, Dark theme and the screen options separately. Night Light may remain a separate display schedule on some devices, so verify whether your Bedtime routine includes it or whether it must be scheduled in Display settings.

These combinations are independent. Turning on Dark theme will not automatically activate DND, and enabling DND will not automatically activate Night Light unless your Bedtime configuration links those actions.

Common surprises and how to correct them
“I enabled Dark theme, but one app is still white.”
Check the app’s own appearance setting first. If it has no theme control, it may not support the system Dark theme. There is no Android-wide switch that can guarantee a dark interface in an unsupported app.
“DND is on, but the phone still looks bright.”
That is expected. DND controls interruptions. Add Dark theme, Night Light, grayscale, wallpaper dimming or the “keep the screen dark” option through Bedtime mode or the relevant Display settings.
“Night Light is on, but notifications still appear.”
Night Light only changes display color. Use Quick Settings for an immediate DND toggle, or create a DND schedule under Modes.
“The menu path in an online guide does not match my phone.”
Pixel instructions are not universal Android instructions. Google documentation uses Display & touch on some Pixel models, while other devices use Display. Android version, manufacturer software and regional releases can also change the location of Modes, Digital Wellbeing and scheduling labels. Search Settings for the feature name when a listed path is missing.

“My bedtime routine starts, but one action does not change.”
Open the Bedtime mode configuration and verify that the action is enabled. Then check whether the device supports that action and whether another schedule controls the same feature. Dark theme can have its own schedule, and DND filters can allow selected categories even while the mode is active.
Version and device limits to keep in mind
Google’s instructions identify some controls as Android 13 or Android 14 and newer, while other controls are documented specifically for Pixel phones. Treat the paths above as a map rather than a promise that every Android phone will show identical labels. The Android release, manufacturer interface and app support determine which schedules and Bedtime actions are available.
The most reliable approach is to separate the three jobs in your mind: color is Night Light, interface appearance is Dark theme, and interruptions are DND. Bedtime mode is the automation layer that can combine them when your phone supports the required options.
Which one should you use?
Choose Night Light if your priority is a warmer display. Choose Dark theme if supported interfaces are too bright. Choose Do Not Disturb if alerts are the issue. If bedtime means all three, configure Bedtime mode and inspect each available action rather than assuming one switch handles everything.
