Android Auto vs. Apple CarPlay: Which Features and Apps Does Each Support?

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay do the same essential job: they put safer, voice-controlled access to navigation, calls, messages and media on a compatible car screen. The better choice is normally determined first by your phone—Android phones use Android Auto, while iPhones use CarPlay—then by your preferred maps, messaging services, vehicle compatibility and wireless hardware. Android Auto is the closer match for people invested in Google Maps, Google voice assistance and Android messaging. CarPlay is the natural fit for iPhone owners who use Apple Maps, Siri and Apple’s ecosystem, while also supporting many third-party navigation, audio, messaging, parking and charging apps.

What Android Auto and CarPlay actually do

Neither system is a completely separate phone inside the dashboard. Your phone supplies the apps, account access, internet connection and most of the processing; the car display provides a driver-friendly interface and audio output. Only apps that have been designed and approved for the in-car interface can appear, and they expose a limited set of driving-relevant functions rather than their entire phone interface.

Google describes Android Auto as bringing apps to the car display so you can focus while driving. Apple’s CarPlay documentation similarly describes compatible audio, navigation, messaging, voice-calling and vehicle-manufacturer apps appearing on CarPlay Home and being controlled with Siri. Both systems are intended to reduce phone handling, not to make every phone app available on the dashboard.

Navigation: maps, traffic and EV trips

Android Auto navigation

Android Auto supports voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information and lane guidance through Google Maps or another compatible navigation app. You can ask for a destination, receive turn instructions on the car screen and continue listening to audio while directions run.

  • [True 10Gbps Ultra-Fast Data Sync] Eliminate data transfer bottlenecks with genuine USB 3.1 Gen 2 performance. Move 4K movies or entire photo libraries in seconds at 10Gbps—speeds significantly faster than standard USB 3.0 cables that often drop to 40Mbps
  • [Built for Tidy Spaces & Durability] The 3ft length is the "perfect length" for car consoles and tidy desktop setups, eliminating excess cable clutter. Featuring an aluminum alloy case and premium nylon braiding, it is manufactured to prevent loose wires and fraying near the plugs
  • [Versatile One-for-All Functionality] A single solution for your high-speed ecosystem. Seamlessly connects the latest iPhone 18 Pro Max Duo/17/16, Samsung Galaxy S26/S25/S24 Ultra, PS5/PS4 controllers, and external SSDs to USB-A ports

Google also documents EV battery prediction and charging-stop recommendations for supported vehicles, EV models and countries. That is not a universal promise for every electric car: the vehicle, model, market and software integration all have to be supported. If the charging planner does not appear, check the car manufacturer’s compatibility information and whether the relevant navigation app and vehicle data are available in your region.

CarPlay navigation

CarPlay supports Apple Maps and compatible third-party navigation apps directly from the CarPlay Dashboard. Apple’s listed examples include Google Maps, Waze, TomTom, Sygic, NAVER Map, NAVITIME, T Map and KakaoNavi, along with other regional services. This gives iPhone users a choice between Apple’s built-in map data and the navigation service they already use.

Which navigation system is better?

  • Choose Android Auto if your saved places, traffic habits and voice searches are centered on Google Maps.
  • Choose CarPlay if you prefer Apple Maps, Siri or one of the regional navigation apps supported by CarPlay.
  • Choose based on coverage in the countries where you drive. A map app may be available on one platform or in one language but not another.
  • For an EV, verify charging-stop support for your exact vehicle and country instead of assuming that either platform provides a complete route planner.

Music, podcasts and other audio

Android Auto audio apps

Android Auto can play music and podcasts through the car’s speakers when the app is Android Auto compatible. Google gives Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora and YouTube Music as examples. The app may require its own subscription or premium account; connecting Android Auto does not remove the service’s paywall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CarPlay audio apps

CarPlay supports Apple Music plus many third-party audio apps. Apple’s examples include Amazon Music, Audible, Audiobooks.com, Downcast, iHeartRadio, Overcast, Pandora, SiriusXM, Spotify, Tidal and YouTube Music. Availability still depends on the app developer, your country and your account status.

Practical audio differences

There is no universal “better” audio catalog. The important question is whether your preferred service has released a compatible in-car app for your phone’s platform. Download the app to the phone, sign in before driving and check that it appears in the Android Auto launcher or CarPlay Home screen. If it does not appear, updating the phone app may help, but the developer or regional availability may be the limiting factor.

Messages, calls and voice control

Android Auto messaging

Android Auto can read incoming messages from compatible services and let you dictate replies. Google lists SMS, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger as examples. Voice commands can create or reply to a message; Google says Gemini or Google Assistant repeats the message and asks for confirmation before sending.

The confirmation step matters: it lets you catch a wrong contact, destination or dictated word without touching the phone. Messaging apps that have not implemented Android Auto support will not become available simply because they are installed on Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CarPlay messaging and calls

CarPlay uses Siri for compatible messaging and voice-calling apps. Apple’s listed examples include WhatsApp and LINE, in addition to Apple’s own Messages and Phone functions. You can ask Siri to read a message, dictate a reply, call a contact or perform supported actions without opening a phone-style app grid.

  • Wide compatibility: This usbc cable is compatible with all USB-C devices, including the Galaxy series, Google Pixel series, iPhone series, tablets, USB-C SSDs, SSD enclosures, and more.

What both systems restrict

  • Only compatible apps can send or read messages through the car interface.
  • Voice recognition depends on microphone quality, language support, connectivity and background noise.
  • Some functions require a data connection and an active account.
  • Driving-focused interfaces intentionally omit unrestricted browsing, games and most visual social-media features.

Parking, charging, food, fueling and vehicle apps

CarPlay’s published examples extend beyond maps and media. Compatible apps can cover parking, EV charging, quick food ordering, fueling and other driving tasks. Apple names ChargePoint, PlugShare, SpotHero, Chevron, Dunkin’, Panera Bread and Target as examples, as well as apps made by vehicle manufacturers. The exact set shown on your screen varies by country, vehicle and developer support.

Google describes Android Auto’s compatible services more broadly as including music, messaging, news and other categories, while its navigation documentation covers EV charging recommendations in supported vehicles and regions. Do not infer that every CarPlay category or named app has an Android Auto equivalent; check the app developer’s current compatibility listing.

How to connect Android Auto

Wired setup

For wired Android Auto, Google lists four essentials: a compatible Android phone, an active data plan, a compatible car and a high-quality USB cable. A charging-only cable can leave the phone powered but unable to establish the data connection, so use a cable designed for data transfer and the correct connector for your phone and vehicle.

  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to allow contacts, messages, notifications and other functions you want to use.
  5. Open the Android Auto launcher on the vehicle screen and confirm that your navigation and audio apps appear.

Wireless setup

Wireless Android Auto requires a compatible phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi and a compatible car or stereo. Google advises confirming compatibility with the vehicle manufacturer. Enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and location on the phone when prompted, then select the vehicle from the phone’s pairing process. The exact menu names vary by car and receiver.

How to connect CarPlay

Wired CarPlay

  1. Start the vehicle and keep it stationary during setup.
  2. Connect the iPhone to the USB port designated for CarPlay with a data-capable cable and the appropriate connector.
  3. Unlock the iPhone and approve the CarPlay request and permissions.
  4. Select the CarPlay icon on the vehicle display if it does not open automatically.
  5. Open CarPlay Home and confirm that your navigation, audio and messaging apps are present.

Wireless CarPlay

Wireless CarPlay is available only when the vehicle or aftermarket receiver supports it. Pair the iPhone using the car’s instructions, typically beginning with Bluetooth and then establishing the wireless CarPlay connection. If the car supports only wired CarPlay, no iPhone setting can turn it into a wireless system without compatible hardware.

Compatibility: the three checks that prevent surprises

1. Check the phone ecosystem

Android Auto is for compatible Android phones; CarPlay is for iPhones. You cannot choose the platform independently of the phone you intend to use. If a household has both Android and iPhone users, check whether the vehicle supports both systems and whether each one can connect wirelessly or by cable.

2. Check the exact vehicle or stereo

A car may support one platform, both, or neither, and wireless support is a separate capability from wired support. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact model, trim, model year and infotainment unit. An aftermarket receiver has its own phone, USB and wireless requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the app and region

App availability depends on developer support, vehicle, phone, language, region and sometimes a subscription. Google notes that its full compatible-app list requires a signed-in Google Account with personalization enabled. Apple likewise describes compatible apps and supported vehicles rather than promising that every iPhone app will appear in CarPlay.

Why an app is missing

  • The developer has not enabled the platform. Installing a normal phone app does not automatically create an Android Auto or CarPlay version.
  • The app is not available in your country or language. Regional navigation, fueling and payment services commonly vary by market.
  • The vehicle does not expose the required category. Some cars restrict which functions can be displayed while moving.
  • The phone app is outdated. Update the app and the phone operating system, then reconnect.
  • Your account or subscription is incomplete. Sign in and verify that the service works on the phone before troubleshooting the car connection.
  • Personalization or permissions are disabled. Review Android Auto, Google Account, Siri, notification and contact permissions.

Troubleshooting connection problems

Wired connection fails

  1. Try the vehicle’s USB port specifically marked for smartphone integration; many ports provide power only.
  2. Replace the cable with a short, high-quality data cable and inspect both connectors for damage or debris.
  3. Unlock the phone and look for a permission prompt.
  4. Restart the phone and infotainment system, then reconnect while the car is parked.
  5. Test the phone with another known-compatible vehicle or test another compatible phone in the same car to isolate the failing component.

Wireless connection fails

  1. Confirm that the exact phone and car support wireless Android Auto or wireless CarPlay; wired support does not guarantee wireless support.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, remove the old pairing from both devices and pair again.
  3. Keep the phone near the vehicle during first setup and accept every pairing and permission request.
  4. Check for infotainment firmware updates from the vehicle manufacturer.

Apps connect but do not appear

Open the Android Auto app list or CarPlay customization settings and verify that the app is allowed. Update the app, sign in and check regional availability. If the service still does not appear, the limitation is likely developer, vehicle or market support rather than the cable.

Which platform should you choose?

Your priority More natural fit Reason
You use an Android phone and Google Maps every day Android Auto It integrates Google navigation, Android messaging and Google voice assistance.
You use an iPhone, Apple Maps and Siri CarPlay It keeps Apple navigation, calls, messages and voice control in one interface.
You rely on Waze or Google Maps with an iPhone CarPlay Both are listed as compatible CarPlay navigation apps.
You need WhatsApp in the car Either, subject to support Google lists WhatsApp for Android Auto; Apple lists WhatsApp for CarPlay.
You need a specific regional map, parking or charging service Check the exact app first Regional and developer support can differ even when the car supports both platforms.
You want a cable-free setup Whichever your car supports wirelessly Wireless capability depends on the phone, vehicle or stereo and its hardware.

Common questions answered

Does Waze work on both?

Waze is listed by Apple as a compatible CarPlay navigation app. Android Auto also supports compatible third-party navigation apps, but availability can depend on the current Android app, phone, vehicle and region. Install the current app and verify that it appears in your platform’s launcher.

Can I use Spotify, WhatsApp and Google Maps?

Spotify and WhatsApp are supported examples across the two ecosystems, while Google Maps is available on Android Auto and listed by Apple for CarPlay. The phone, vehicle, region, app version and account still determine whether each one appears for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a cable?

No, if your phone and vehicle support the relevant wireless standard. Otherwise use a high-quality USB data cable for wired Android Auto or the cable required by your CarPlay setup. Wireless and wired support should be checked separately.

Will every phone app show on the car screen?

No. Only apps with Android Auto or CarPlay support and an approved driving interface appear. The platforms deliberately limit distracting or unsupported functions.

Can two people use different phone platforms in one car?

Only if the vehicle supports both Android Auto and CarPlay. You will generally connect one phone at a time; the car’s pairing and priority settings determine which device connects automatically.

Bottom line

Pick the platform that matches your phone, then verify the exact car, wireless capability and apps you actually use. Android Auto is the practical choice for Android owners who depend on Google navigation and services. CarPlay is the practical choice for iPhone owners who want Apple Maps, Siri and CarPlay’s broad named selection of third-party navigation, audio, messaging, parking and charging apps. Neither platform guarantees every app or feature in every country, so compatibility checks are part of the buying decision.
