To stop Android Auto message alerts, change the notification setting on the Android phone first: open Settings > Notifications (or Settings > Apps > [your messaging app] > Notifications) and disable the message alert type, sound or vibration that is interrupting you. For a broader, driving-only quiet period, use Modes or Do Not Disturb to block the app, messages or selected conversations. To stop Android Auto from reading AI-generated summaries, turn off Message Summary in Android Auto or Google Assistant settings.
These controls do different jobs. Silencing an app changes its alerts everywhere on the phone; a driving mode can be temporary; Message Summary affects spoken summaries rather than every notification. Android Auto can still keep dismissed or missed messages in its notification centre, and exact menu names vary by phone maker, Android version, messaging app and vehicle.

Choose the control that matches the interruption
Start by identifying what you actually want to stop. A banner on the car display, a notification chime, a vibration from the phone, an incoming-message read-aloud and an AI summary are separate outputs. Changing one does not necessarily disable the others.
| Goal | Where to change it | Scope | What remains possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mute one messaging app | Phone notification settings | Usually permanent until you reverse it | Other apps can still alert; missed items may remain in Android Auto’s notification centre |
| Quiet the car only while driving | Android Settings > Modes or Do Not Disturb | Temporary or schedule-based | Allowed people, apps or conversations can still interrupt |
| Stop spoken AI summaries | Android Auto or Google Assistant notification settings | Message Summary feature where available | Individual notification behavior can still depend on the messaging app |
| Review alerts you dismissed | Android Auto notification centre | Previously missed or dismissed items | Voice playback may still be available from the centre |
| Fix alerts that never appear | Phone notifications, connection and notification access | Restores delivery prerequisites | Vehicle and head-unit compatibility still applies |
If you are unsure, use the least disruptive change first: turn off the sound for the relevant app, take a short drive while parked or as a passenger, and then decide whether visual alerts or spoken messages also need changing.
Silence one messaging app on your phone
Android Auto receives message notifications through the phone. The most reliable way to mute a single service is therefore to change that app’s notification channels on the phone rather than searching through every car-screen menu.

Android’s current settings path
- Open Settings on the Android phone.
- Tap Notifications. On some phones, use Apps, select the messaging app, then tap Notifications.
- Select the messaging app you want to quiet.
- Turn off the incoming-message notification category, or change that category from an alerting notification to a silent one.
- If the category exposes separate controls, disable its sound and vibration. Keep or disable a visual alert according to whether you still want a banner on the phone or car display.
- Reconnect to Android Auto or wait for the next incoming message to verify the result while safely parked.
Google notes that notification controls and menu labels vary by phone. A manufacturer may call categories “notification types,” “channels,” “conversations” or “message alerts.” If you cannot find a general switch, open the app’s notification page and inspect each message-related category rather than disabling every notification by guesswork.
Mute sound without hiding the notification
Use a silent category when you want Android Auto or the phone to retain a visual indication but do not want a chime or vibration. This is useful when a passenger can glance at the screen or when you plan to review messages after parking. Turning off the entire category is more aggressive: it can remove the alert from normal notification surfaces, although Android Auto may still show an item that was already received or later marked as missed.

Some messaging apps expose conversation-level controls inside their own notification settings. If the phone presents a named conversation or thread, silence that conversation instead of the whole app. Android’s system-level choices can also include people, messages or conversations in a Mode or Do Not Disturb filter. The available granularity depends on the app and the phone’s Android release.
Use Modes or Do Not Disturb for driving
When you want a quiet cabin only during a commute, use the Android system’s interruption filter rather than permanently changing the app. On recent Android phones this is commonly under Settings > Modes; other devices use Settings > Do Not Disturb. A mode may be named Driving, or you can create or edit another mode for the same purpose.
- Open Settings and select Modes or Do Not Disturb.
- Choose the driving mode or create a mode for driving.
- Open Notification filters, Apps, or the equivalent filter page.
- Block the messaging app, message notifications or specific conversations you do not want interrupting you.
- Review the people and call exceptions. Remove an exception only if you are certain you do not need that contact to reach you while driving.
- Set the mode to turn on manually, on a schedule or when the phone detects the relevant activity, if those options are offered.
Android allows filters for people, apps and other interruption categories, but the exact choices differ by device. A mode that blocks one app can still permit calls, navigation prompts or another approved app. Check the exception list after every change; an allowed conversation can make it appear that the filter failed when it is working as configured.

When a mode is better than an app-level mute
- A mode is preferable when you want the same phone to behave normally outside the vehicle.
- Use an app-level setting when one service should remain quiet at work, at home and in the car.
- Use a conversation filter when only a group chat or a particular contact is distracting.
- Use a broader Do Not Disturb filter when several messaging apps need to be quiet together.
Modes are not a substitute for safe driving. Configure them before moving, and do not use the phone to adjust filters while the vehicle is in motion.

Android Auto can offer a Message Summary feature that generates a spoken overview of multiple messages. This is separate from an ordinary notification sound and from a voice command that reads a particular message. If summaries are the part you dislike, disable that feature instead of silencing every message notification.
- Open the Android Auto app on the phone, or open its settings from the connected-car setup.
- Open Settings and find the Notifications section.
- Turn off Message Summary.
- If the option is not present there, check the relevant Google Assistant settings on the phone and look for the same notification or summary control.
- Reconnect Android Auto and test with a new message while parked.
Google says Message Summary availability varies by device, region, country and language. The feature can also make mistakes, so a summary should not be treated as a precise transcription. Turning it off does not necessarily stop every spoken interaction: Android Auto may still read a notification when you ask by voice, and a notification centre item may remain available for later playback.
Use Android Auto’s notification centre instead of pop-ups
Silencing a pop-up does not always erase the underlying notification. Android Auto displays a numbered indicator when there are missed calls, messages or other alerts. Tap that indicator on the car screen to open the notification centre. From there, dismissed or missed messages can be selected and played aloud later.
This behavior explains two common observations:
- “I muted messages, but an item is still listed.” A notification can remain in the centre even when its banner or sound was suppressed.
- “The pop-up disappeared; did the message vanish?” Not necessarily. Check the notification centre after stopping safely, or review the message in the phone’s messaging app when parked.
The centre is designed for glanceable, voice-oriented use. Avoid scrolling through a long list or attempting to type a reply while moving. If you need to compose a detailed response, wait until the vehicle is parked.

Why Android Auto message notifications are missing
When no message appears at all, work through the delivery chain from the phone to the car. A missing alert is different from a deliberately silenced alert, and changing Message Summary will not restore a notification that the phone never delivered.
Check the messaging app on the phone
- Open the phone’s Settings > Notifications, or Settings > Apps > [messaging app] > Notifications.
- Confirm that the app’s main notification switch is on.
- Open the individual message categories and confirm that incoming messages are not disabled or restricted to a mode you are not currently using.
- Send a test message while the phone is unlocked and not connected to the car. If the phone itself shows nothing, Android Auto cannot display it.
Check the connection and vehicle compatibility
Android Auto requires a compatible car or stereo. Confirm that the phone is connected to the vehicle as expected and that Android Auto actually opens on the head unit. If the phone connects for charging or Bluetooth audio but Android Auto does not start, the message path is not active. Google directs drivers to the vehicle manufacturer for compatibility information because support differs among cars and aftermarket stereos.
Check notification access
Some connected-car configurations require notification access so Android Auto or the vehicle’s assistant can read incoming alerts. Review the phone’s special-app or notification-access settings and make sure the connected-car service has the access it requests. Do not grant access to an unfamiliar app merely to make an alert appear; verify the service name shown by the phone.
For cars with Google built-in
Cars with Google built-in are not identical to a phone running Android Auto on the car display. Google specifies Bluetooth plus notification access for Gemini or Google Assistant in the relevant built-in-car setup. If one of those permissions is missing, restore it in the vehicle or phone settings as applicable, then reconnect and test while parked.
Check filters before resetting anything
A Driving mode, Do Not Disturb schedule or conversation-specific mute can hide alerts without an obvious error. Temporarily disable the active filter for a controlled test. If messages return, re-enable the mode and add only the exceptions you actually need. Avoid factory-resetting the phone or vehicle as a first step; notification permissions and app categories are the more likely causes.

Understand what each alert channel controls
| Alert channel | Typical symptom | Relevant setting | Result of changing it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual banner on the car display | A message card appears on screen | App notification category, Mode filter or Android Auto notification behavior | Can hide the card while leaving a notification centre item |
| Sound or chime | An audible tone announces a message | App category sound, phone sound profile or Mode | Stops or reduces the tone; visual alert may remain |
| Phone vibration | The handset vibrates even when the car is quiet | App category vibration and phone sound profile | Stops the vibration for that category or profile |
| Ordinary spoken notification | Assistant reads a message or notification aloud | Assistant/Android Auto notification behavior and voice request | May still be available on demand or from the notification centre |
| AI-generated summary | Several messages are condensed into one spoken overview | Message Summary | Stops summaries where the feature is available |
Make one change at a time and test. If you turn off the app category, a sound setting and a Mode simultaneously, you will not know which control produced the result or which one to restore later.
Driving lockouts and safe ways to respond
Android Auto is designed to reduce distraction by adapting the interface for driving. Google describes it as bringing apps to the car display so you can focus on the road. Voice commands can read and send messages, while some actions, including typing, are locked out while the vehicle is moving.
- Set notification preferences before you depart or ask a passenger to make the change.
- Use a voice command for a short reply when the system offers that action and you can do so without losing attention.
- Do not attempt to bypass a typing lockout. Complete restricted actions after parking.
- If a message requires a detailed answer, leave it for a safe stop rather than repeatedly replaying it through the car speakers.
A quieter notification setup should reduce interruptions, not encourage phone handling. The safest configuration is the one that lets you keep your eyes on the road and your hands available for driving.
Practical setups for common situations
Only one chat group is disruptive
Open the messaging app’s notification settings and mute that conversation if the app exposes a conversation control. If it does not, use Android’s people, messages or conversation filter in a driving Mode. Do not disable the entire app unless you are comfortable missing alerts from every conversation.
Every messaging app should be quiet during a commute
Create or edit a Driving mode and block the messaging apps under Notification filters. Keep essential call or navigation exceptions only after reviewing them. Leave the apps’ permanent notification settings unchanged so they behave normally when the mode ends.
Best Value
Visual alerts are acceptable, but sounds are not
Set the relevant app category to silent or turn off its sound and vibration while leaving visual notifications enabled. Confirm that the car’s own audio volume or notification-volume control is not reintroducing a chime from a separate vehicle setting.
Messages are fine, but summaries are distracting
Leave ordinary notification handling in place and disable Message Summary. If you still hear a specific message read aloud, check whether it was an on-demand Assistant request or playback from the notification centre rather than an AI summary.
Nothing appears, including missed messages
First test the app on the phone, then verify the Android Auto connection, notification access and active Modes or Do Not Disturb filters. A vehicle that is not compatible with Android Auto cannot display its notifications, even if the phone’s app settings are correct.
How to restore alerts after muting them
- On the phone, return to Settings > Notifications or Settings > Apps > [messaging app] > Notifications.
- Turn the app’s main notification switch back on.
- Re-enable the incoming-message category and choose the desired sound, vibration and visual behavior.
- Open Modes or Do Not Disturb and remove the app, messages or conversations from the blocked list, or turn off the driving mode.
- Open Android Auto notification settings and re-enable Message Summary only if you want that feature and it is offered for your device, region and language.
- Reconnect to the car and send a test message while parked.
If the phone shows the test notification but Android Auto does not, focus on the connection, vehicle compatibility and notification-access steps rather than repeatedly changing the app’s sound.
What Android Auto can and cannot guarantee
Android supports app-level notification controls, including alert type, sound and vibration, but the exact interface is device-specific. Modes and Do Not Disturb can filter people, messages and apps, yet their categories and automation options vary. Message Summary is a separate feature with regional and language limits. Android Auto’s notification centre can preserve dismissed or missed items even when pop-ups are suppressed.
That combination means there is no single universal “turn off all texts” switch that behaves identically on every phone and vehicle. The dependable approach is to identify the output you want to stop, change the narrowest control that governs it, and test the result with the car stationary.
