Android Auto not connecting? How to fix wired and wireless connection problems

When Android Auto will not connect, check compatibility first, then isolate the connection type. A phone that only charges is receiving power but may not have a working data path. For a wired setup, the highest-probability fixes are the correct USB port and a short, high-quality data cable. For wireless Android Auto, the phone and car must complete a Bluetooth pairing workflow while Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services remain enabled.

Use the steps below in order. They separate phone, cable, port, pairing and vehicle-software faults so you do not waste time resetting a phone that the car cannot support.

Start with a two-minute diagnosis

Match what you see on the car display to the first check in this table. Do not assume that a powered USB socket supports Android Auto: many vehicle ports are charge-only, and a compatible phone cannot create data support that the vehicle does not have.

What happens Check first What the symptom usually means
The phone does nothing when plugged in Confirm the car and stereo model are listed as Android Auto compatible, then try the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable data port. The port may be charge-only, the vehicle may not support Android Auto, or the cable may not carry data.
The phone charges but Android Auto does not launch Unlock the phone, replace the cable with a short data cable, and look for Android Auto and permission prompts on both screens. Power is present, but the USB data connection, permissions or launch request is failing.
Android Auto worked before and suddenly stopped Replace the USB cable before changing other settings. Google says a cable replacement will likely fix a connection that previously worked.
Wireless pairing never appears Start pairing from the car’s phone or voice-command controls while parked, with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled. The vehicle may require a specific pairing path, or it may support Bluetooth calls and music without supporting wireless Android Auto.
Connection drops repeatedly For wired use, remove hubs and extensions and inspect the connectors. For wireless use, repeat first-time pairing with the infotainment system fully on. An unstable cable or an incomplete wireless setup is more likely than an Android Auto app problem.

Confirm compatibility and requirements

Compatibility is a prerequisite, not a setting that can be enabled later. Check the exact vehicle or aftermarket stereo model in Google’s Android Auto compatibility directory and compare it with the vehicle maker’s manual. Google describes Android Auto as working with more than 500 vehicle models in the directory accessed on October 20, 2026; that count is a current directory statement rather than a guarantee for every trim, model year or region.

A USB connector alone does not prove support. A vehicle can have several USB sockets, including ports intended only for charging or media playback. Wireless support is also separate from ordinary Bluetooth audio: a car may stream music and handle calls over Bluetooth while lacking wireless Android Auto.

Connection mode Phone requirement listed by Google Vehicle requirement Additional setup
Wired Android Auto Android 9.0 or higher for most wired connections Compatible car or stereo with an Android Auto-capable data USB port Short, high-quality USB data cable; no hub or extension
Wireless Android Auto Android 11.0 or higher Car or stereo that specifically supports wireless Android Auto Bluetooth pairing with Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled during setup

If the exact vehicle is absent from the compatibility directory, or the manual lists only wired Android Auto when you are attempting wireless, phone-side resets cannot add that capability. Treat the limitation as a vehicle or stereo issue and contact the manufacturer before buying cables or changing phone settings.

Fix a wired Android Auto connection

Perform these checks in sequence. Keep the car parked while you work; first-time setup requires the infotainment system to be on and the vehicle in Park.

1. Prepare the car and phone

  1. Put the vehicle in Park and switch on the infotainment system.
  2. Unlock the phone before connecting it. Watch the phone for Android Auto, USB and permission prompts, and watch the car display for its own instructions.
  3. Use the phone’s normal screen rather than assuming Android Auto will start silently. Accept the requested permissions and follow the prompts shown on the vehicle display.

If no prompt appears, continue with the port and cable checks rather than repeatedly tapping the Android Auto icon. A missing prompt can be caused by the physical data link.

  • What You Get: You will receive 1pcs 1.5ft USB 3.1 Gen2 10Gbps Cable, with our 12-month product replacement warranty and lifetime 24/7 friendly technical support.

2. Use the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port

Consult the vehicle manual for the port marked for smartphone integration, Android Auto or data. Test that port directly. Do not use a USB hub, splitter or extension while diagnosing the connection. If the car has multiple sockets, try only ports identified as data-capable; a charge-only socket can make the phone battery icon appear while preventing Android Auto from launching.

3. Replace the cable with a short, compliant data cable

Use a high-quality USB cable that matches the connector on the phone and the connector in the vehicle. Google recommends a cable under 1 metre (3 feet), without a hub or extension. The cable must support data, not charging only. A cable sold or described solely for charging is not an adequate test.

For the cleanest comparison, try the cable supplied with the phone or another standards-compliant cable known to transfer data. Inspect both plugs for bent contacts, looseness, cracking, dirt or pocket lint. Make sure each plug is fully seated; a connector that feels tight but is not inserted completely can deliver power without a stable data connection.

4. Complete the permission and launch prompts

  1. With the phone unlocked, connect it directly to the correct data port.
  2. Read and accept the Android Auto permissions requested on the phone.
  3. Follow any confirmation or safety message on the car display.
  4. If the car display shows an Android Auto icon but does not open it automatically, select that icon after the cable is connected.

Do not disconnect while prompts are appearing. The first connection can take longer than subsequent launches because the phone and head unit are establishing permissions and vehicle settings.

5. Isolate the failed part

Change one item at a time so the result is meaningful. Keep the same phone and try a different known-good cable; then keep that cable and try the vehicle’s other documented data port, if one exists. If another compatible phone works with the same port and cable, the original phone’s USB connector, software state or permissions deserve attention. If no phone works, the cable, port or head unit is the stronger suspect.

A charge-only result with several known-good data cables points away from the cable. Recheck the vehicle’s compatibility listing and manual, then move to manufacturer support rather than repeatedly reinstalling or resetting phone software.

Set up and repair wireless Android Auto

Wireless Android Auto is a coordinated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi setup, not Bluetooth audio with an Android Auto label. Complete the first pairing while parked with the infotainment system switched on.

1. Confirm wireless support

Verify that both the phone and the exact car or stereo model support wireless Android Auto. The car’s ability to make Bluetooth calls does not establish wireless Android Auto compatibility. If the manual describes only wired Android Auto, use the wired procedure or ask the vehicle maker whether a supported software or hardware upgrade exists.

2. Start pairing from the car

  1. Put the car in Park and turn on the infotainment system.
  2. Open the vehicle’s phone, connectivity or voice-command pairing flow. The label and menu location vary by vehicle, so use the manual if you cannot find it.
  3. On the phone, select the car when its Bluetooth name appears and confirm the matching code or prompts.
  4. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled while the setup completes.
  5. Wait for Android Auto to start. If it does not open automatically, tap the Android Auto icon on the car display.

Google Pixel Help advises: “For best results, keep your phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while you complete the setup.” Turning off Wi-Fi or Location Services during pairing can interrupt the handoff even when Bluetooth calls appear to work.

3. If no pairing prompt appears

Do not infer that the phone is incompatible solely because the car does not show a prompt. Some vehicles require pairing to begin from a steering-wheel voice button, a Phone menu or a dedicated smartphone-integration screen. Consult the vehicle manual for that exact sequence. If the documented controls are absent, outdated or unresponsive, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center; phone settings cannot repair a malfunctioning head unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Re-run first-time setup after a failed attempt

Park, switch the infotainment system off and on, then initiate pairing again from the vehicle’s documented flow. Keep all three wireless services enabled and leave the phone unlocked until the permission screens are complete. Avoid trying to pair while driving or while the vehicle is in a restricted safety state, because some systems suppress setup controls until the car is stationary.

Why Android Auto may charge but not launch

Charging confirms only that the phone and car are supplying electrical power. Android Auto also needs a functioning USB data connection, a compatible head unit, an accepted permission flow and a supported phone configuration. These are separate conditions.

  • Charge-only port: The socket supplies power but has no Android Auto data path. Use the port identified in the manual for smartphone integration.
  • Charge-only or damaged cable: Replace it with a short data cable under 1 metre when possible. Remove extensions and hubs.
  • Phone still locked: Unlock it and accept the Android Auto and permission prompts.
  • Unsupported vehicle or mode: A vehicle may support wired but not wireless Android Auto, or neither mode. Verify the exact model in the compatibility directory.
  • Head-unit problem: If several compatible phones and known-good cables fail in the documented port, the vehicle’s infotainment software or hardware may need service.

Use the symptom as a diagnostic clue, not as proof that the Android Auto application is broken. Power and data can fail independently.

Wired versus wireless: choose the practical path

When a vehicle supports both modes, compare them against the conditions you can reliably maintain. Neither mode is universally better.

Decision point Wired Android Auto Wireless Android Auto
Vehicle support Requires a compatible car or stereo and an Android Auto-capable data USB port. Requires a car or stereo that specifically supports wireless Android Auto.
Phone version Android 9.0 or higher for most wired connections, according to Google’s overview. Android 11.0 or higher, according to Google’s overview.
Physical link Short, high-quality data cable; no hub or extension. No cable for normal use, but the initial connection uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
First-time setup Connect while parked, unlock the phone and accept prompts. Pair through the car’s phone or voice-command flow while parked, with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled.
Most useful first test Swap the cable and verify the correct data port. Repeat the vehicle-directed Bluetooth pairing process and verify wireless support.
Typical reason to choose it A direct, easy-to-isolate connection that also keeps the phone charging. Convenience after successful pairing, with no cable to plug in for each trip.

If wireless pairing is unreliable but wired Android Auto works, use wired mode while checking the vehicle’s wireless instructions or firmware. If the car supports only wired mode, a cable is not a workaround for a missing wireless feature; it is the supported connection method.

When vehicle software or hardware is the problem

Escalate to the vehicle manufacturer when the exact model is unsupported, the documented pairing controls are missing, the infotainment system will not respond, or multiple known-good phones and cables fail in the correct port. Ask whether the head unit has a current firmware version and whether your specific trim and model year support Android Auto in your region.

Phone resets cannot make an incompatible stereo compatible. Likewise, changing a cable cannot repair a head unit whose USB data hardware has failed. Give the service representative concrete test results: the phone’s Android version, connection mode, port used, cable tested, whether the phone charged, and whether another compatible phone produced the same result.

A repeatable recovery checklist

  1. Verify the exact vehicle or stereo model in Google’s Android Auto compatibility directory and read the vehicle manual.
  2. Choose the supported mode: wired, wireless or both.
  3. For wired use, park, power the infotainment system, use the documented data port and connect a short, high-quality data cable directly.
  4. For wireless use, park, start pairing from the vehicle’s phone or voice controls, and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on.
  5. Unlock the phone, accept Android Auto and permission prompts, and select the Android Auto icon on the car display if it does not open automatically.
  6. If a previously working wired connection failed, replace the cable before changing other settings.
  7. Test one alternate known-good cable, port or compatible phone at a time.
  8. If every documented combination fails, stop resetting the phone and contact the vehicle manufacturer or stereo service provider with your test results.

This sequence distinguishes a simple cable or port fault from a missing feature or vehicle-side failure while preserving the settings that already work.
