Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Android Auto connects but no music plays without mobile data, the problem is usually not Android Auto itself. Android Auto is the transport and car-display layer; the phone’s music app must support Android Auto, be signed in, and already contain a valid local download or cache. A streaming app cannot fetch a track that was never stored on the phone.
Test playback in the music app on the phone first, then verify downloads, account status, storage, offline settings and the USB connection in that order. The steps below cover Spotify, YouTube Music and TIDAL, plus the connection and recovery checks that apply to any service.

What has to be true for offline music to work
Offline Android Auto playback depends on several separate conditions. If any one fails, the car may still show Android Auto normally while the music screen is empty, tracks remain greyed out, or play commands do nothing.

- The app must be Android Auto-compatible. Google states that media apps used in the car must be compatible with Android Auto.
- You must be signed in on the phone. Google also instructs users to sign in to an app on the phone before starting Android Auto.
- The track must be stored locally. A saved playlist, liked song or library entry is not necessarily a downloaded file. The app must show it as downloaded or available offline.
- The download must still be valid. Some services periodically check the account and subscription online. YouTube Music, for example, requires a Premium device to reconnect at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads.
- The phone must have enough storage and an intact cache. Removing cached data, reinstalling an app or running out of space can remove the local copy that offline playback needs.
- The Android Auto connection must carry data. A charge-only lead, an unsupported vehicle port or a damaged cable can leave the phone charging without providing a usable Android Auto session.
Android Auto does not download songs for another app. It presents controls and audio from the compatible app that is running on the phone.

Fast diagnosis: find out which layer is failing
Do these checks before changing settings. They separate an app/download problem from an Android Auto or vehicle problem in a few minutes.
- Go online and open the music app on the phone. Play one of the exact albums, playlists or podcasts you expect to use in the car.
- Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi while the app is still open. Start the same track from the app’s own offline or downloads area. If it fails on the phone, Android Auto cannot fix it.
- Check the account. Confirm that the app shows the intended account and that any subscription required for downloads is active.
- Reconnect Android Auto. With the phone offline, open the Android Auto music area and look for the app’s downloaded or offline view.
- Try another downloaded track. One damaged or unavailable item can fail while the rest of the library works.
These results point to the next step:
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The song will not play offline on the phone | It was not downloaded, the cache is missing, the account is wrong, or the download expired | Repair the music app’s downloads and account first |
| It plays on the phone but not in Android Auto | Android Auto app compatibility, sign-in state, app integration or connection issue | Sign in again, update, reconnect and test the cable |
| Android Auto does not start or disconnects | USB cable, port, vehicle compatibility or head-unit issue | Use a known-good data cable and supported data port |
| Only one album or playlist fails | That item is incomplete, unavailable or corrupted locally | Remove and redownload that item while online |
Step 1: verify the phone’s offline copy
Test while online, then repeat offline
Connect to the internet and open the music service directly on the phone. Locate the playlist, album, song or podcast you intend to play. Look for the service’s explicit download indicator or Downloads/Offline section; a playlist that merely appears in your library may still require streaming.
Start a track and let it play briefly while online, then enable airplane mode or disable both Wi-Fi and mobile data. Test the same track again. This confirms that the app has a local copy rather than relying on a network request. Restore connectivity after the test if the app needs an account check.
Check storage before downloading again
Downloads and streaming caches use internal phone storage. If storage is nearly full, the app may leave a playlist partially downloaded or silently stop adding tracks. Free space before retrying, and confirm that the app’s download indicator completes for the entire playlist or album. Do not assume that a download started successfully just because it appears in a library.
Do not clear data before an offline trip
Clearing an app’s cache or reinstalling it can remove local tracks. Spotify specifically lists cleared cache and reinstallation among the reasons its Offline Backup may no longer appear in Android Auto. Perform those actions only when you have internet access and enough time to download the library again.
Spotify: restore Offline Backup in Android Auto
Spotify documents an Offline Backup view for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It appears on the Spotify Home screen when the device is offline, provided offline listening is enabled and songs are stored in the device cache.

Prepare Spotify while connected
- Open Spotify on the phone and sign in to the account that owns the playlists.
- Confirm that offline listening is enabled in Spotify’s settings or offline controls.
- Play the intended music for long enough for the tracks to be cached, or explicitly download the playlists and albums you need. Verify that they appear in Spotify’s Downloads or offline area.
- Check available phone storage. Low storage can prevent the cache from being populated.
- Keep Spotify installed and avoid clearing its cache immediately before departure.
Spotify’s guidance does not establish one universal subscription rule in the material available here; use the plan and offline entitlements shown in your account. If a plan change or account sign-out occurred, reconnect online and verify access before testing in the car.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test Offline Backup in the car
- With the Spotify cache confirmed, disable mobile data and Wi-Fi on the phone.
- Connect Android Auto and open Spotify from the car screen.
- Return to the Spotify Home screen and look for Offline Backup.
- Choose a cached track. If one item fails, try another downloaded song rather than concluding that the whole cache is unusable.
Why Offline Backup may be missing
Spotify identifies several reasons the Offline Backup surface may not appear: insufficient storage, a cleared cache, reinstallation, or too little recent playback. Reconnect to the internet, play the desired material so the cache is active, and then repeat the offline test. If you reinstalled Spotify, redownload the music before disconnecting.
If Spotify still fails
Update Spotify and the phone, confirm internet access before leaving, restart Spotify, and restart the car or head unit. Spotify recommends reinstalling only if the earlier steps do not resolve the problem; remember that reinstallation removes the local cache and therefore requires a fresh download.
YouTube Music: keep Premium downloads valid
YouTube Music Premium supports offline downloads of playlists, albums, individual songs and podcasts. Google’s Android Auto instructions also require that you be signed in to the YouTube Music app on the phone before using it in the car.
Download deliberately
- While online, open YouTube Music and sign in to the Premium account you intend to use in Android Auto.
- Open the playlist, album, song or podcast and choose its download control. Wait until the download is complete.
- Open the app’s Downloads or offline area and start a track from there.
- Disable Wi-Fi and mobile data and repeat the test on the phone.
Saving an item to a library or queue is not the same as downloading it. Test from the app’s offline area so you know the file is available without a network.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Reconnect at least once every 30 days
Google says YouTube Music Premium devices must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads. If the car has been offline longer than that, connect the phone before the trip, open YouTube Music and allow the account and downloads to refresh. A download that worked last month can be unavailable today if this validation did not occur.

Use the Android Auto Music tab
- Sign in to YouTube Music on the phone before starting Android Auto.
- Connect Android Auto and open the car’s Music tab or app launcher.
- Select YouTube Music and choose the downloaded material.
- If the list is empty, disconnect Android Auto and confirm the same downloads play with the phone offline.
If offline playback fails on the phone, redownload while online and check storage. If it succeeds on the phone but not in the car, continue with the Android Auto connection and app checks below.
TIDAL: use downloads or offline mode
TIDAL’s Android Auto support recommends downloaded playlists or offline mode when playback problems occur. The same basic rule applies: the track must be available locally before the phone loses connectivity.
- Open TIDAL while online and sign in.
- Download the playlists or albums you expect to use, then verify them in TIDAL’s offline area.
- Test one downloaded track with Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled.
- Reconnect the phone to Android Auto and choose the downloaded material.
- If one track fails, try another track, as TIDAL recommends; a single unavailable item does not prove that every download is broken.
TIDAL also suggests reconnecting the phone and testing another USB cable when Android Auto playback is unreliable. Those checks are useful after the local offline test succeeds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix the wired Android Auto connection
If the music app works offline on the phone but Android Auto cannot play it, treat the connection as a separate fault. Google says replacing the USB cable will likely fix an Android Auto connection that previously worked.
Use a real data cable and the correct port
- Replace the current lead with a known-good Android Auto-compatible USB data cable. A cable that only supplies power can charge the phone without carrying Android Auto data.
- Try a second cable if the first replacement behaves the same way.
- Plug into the vehicle’s supported Android Auto data port, not a charge-only USB socket. Some vehicles have multiple ports with different capabilities.
- Inspect both connectors for looseness or damage and ensure the phone is unlocked when the session starts.
Do not judge a cable solely by whether the phone shows a charging icon. Android Auto needs a stable data connection.
Confirm vehicle compatibility
Google advises confirming that the car or aftermarket head unit is Android Auto-compatible. If Android Auto never starts, repeatedly drops out, or fails with every app, the vehicle or head unit may be the limiting layer rather than Spotify, YouTube Music or TIDAL.

Update before reinstalling
Spotify recommends updating the app and devices, checking internet connectivity before departure, restarting the app and restarting the car. Apply the same low-risk order to other services:
- Install pending updates for the music app and the phone’s system components.
- While online, open the app and confirm the account and offline library.
- Restart the app and retest offline on the phone.
- Restart the car or head unit and reconnect Android Auto.
- Reinstall only when necessary and only when you can redownload the offline library afterward.
Reinstallation is not a harmless connection reset for an offline listener: it commonly removes downloaded files and caches. Plan for a complete download and an offline phone test after reinstalling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a fallback to isolate the failing layer
Spotify documents Bluetooth, AUX, USB and Android Auto as connection paths. A fallback is useful diagnostically as well as practically.
Bluetooth
Pair the phone directly with the car and start the already-downloaded track from the music app. If Bluetooth plays the track while Android Auto does not, the offline file and car speakers are working; focus on Android Auto, the USB cable or the head unit.
AUX
If the vehicle has an auxiliary input, connect the phone and play the offline track. AUX bypasses Android Auto’s app interface and can confirm that the phone can produce audio independently.

Vehicle USB media
Some vehicles can play supported audio files from USB storage or a phone connection without Android Auto. Use this only if your vehicle documents that capability and the media format is supported. It is a fallback path, not a way to make an un-downloaded streaming track available.
If none of the fallback paths produce audio, check the car’s source selection, volume, mute state and speakers separately from Android Auto.

Symptoms and targeted fixes
“Android Auto connects, but there is no music”
Play a downloaded track on the phone with connectivity disabled. If it fails, repair the app’s offline library. If it works, sign in again, update the app, restart the phone and car, and replace the USB cable with a known-good data cable.
“Spotify offline works on the phone but not in the car”
With the phone offline, open Spotify’s Home screen in Android Auto and look for Offline Backup. If it is absent, check storage, recent playback and whether the cache was cleared or Spotify was reinstalled. Reconnect online and rebuild the cache before trying again.
“YouTube Music downloads disappeared”
Reconnect the Premium account to the internet and open YouTube Music. The 30-day validation requirement may have expired. Confirm that the downloads still play in the app’s offline area, then reconnect Android Auto.
“Only one playlist or song will not play”
Test another downloaded item. If the second item works, remove and redownload the failed playlist, album or song while online. An individual unavailable or incomplete item can fail independently of the rest of the library.
“Android Auto keeps disconnecting”
Replace the cable, use the vehicle’s supported data port, restart the phone and car, and confirm vehicle compatibility. If every app is affected, contact the vehicle or head-unit manufacturer rather than treating it as a music-service download problem.
When to contact support
Give the issue to the owner that controls the failing layer:
- Music-app developer: the track plays nowhere offline, downloads vanish, the account is rejected, or the service’s offline view is missing after the app-specific checks.
- Vehicle or head-unit manufacturer: Android Auto will not start, disconnects with every app, or fails with multiple known-good cables and phones.
- Google Android Auto help: persistent Android Auto integration problems, compatibility questions and the available troubleshooting or bug-report routes.
When escalating, record the phone model, car or head-unit model, music app and version, whether the track plays offline on the phone, the cable and port used, and whether another connection method works. That information identifies the layer without requiring you to delete downloads first.
Quick Recap
Prevent the problem before your next drive
- Download the exact playlists, albums or podcasts while online; do not rely on library saves alone.
- Play a sample with Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled before leaving.
- Keep free phone storage so caches and new downloads can complete.
- Stay signed in to the correct music account.
- For YouTube Music Premium, reconnect the device at least once every 30 days.
- Avoid clearing cache or reinstalling immediately before an offline trip.
- Carry a known-good Android Auto-compatible USB data cable and use the vehicle’s supported data port.
- Keep the music app and phone updated, then restart the phone and car if the session behaves unexpectedly.
- Know whether Bluetooth or AUX can serve as a temporary fallback.
