Android Auto Audio Sounds Bad? Diagnose the Cause Before Changing Settings

When Android Auto audio sounds quiet, distorted, thin, or choppy, isolate the app, vehicle volume channel, connection, and receiver one at a time.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Android Auto music or podcasts sound too quiet, distorted, thin, or choppy, change one thing at a time: test another media app, adjust the car’s media volume while audio is playing, then check the connection and infotainment receiver. There is no single Android Auto equalizer, codec, or cable fix established for every sound problem.

First identify the sound problem

“Bad audio” can describe different symptoms, and they may have different causes. Decide which one you are hearing before changing settings:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Too quiet: playback is consistently softer than expected.
  • Distorted or harsh: sound breaks up, crackles, or seems to clip.
  • Thin or weak bass: the sound lacks weight compared with another source.
  • Dropouts or stuttering: playback pauses or cuts in and out.
  • Inconsistent: loudness or sound changes between apps, tracks, or sources.

Do not infer a codec or encoding fault from listening alone. Park before adjusting the phone, car, or infotainment settings.

Check whether the app or track is responsible

Keep the phone and car configuration the same, then try a different track or another compatible media app. If only one app or track sounds wrong, the comparison points toward that source rather than proving a problem with Android Auto itself.

Android Auto media playback requires compatible apps on the phone, and some apps or features may require an account or subscription. Check the app’s playback settings and account status. Google directs users to the app developer for app-specific troubleshooting: Google’s guidance on listening to media in Android Auto.

Adjust the car’s media volume while audio plays

Start music or a podcast, then use the vehicle’s media volume control. Some cars manage navigation prompts, media, and voice at separate levels; turning up navigation instructions may not make music louder. Google notes: “In some vehicles, the volumes for navigation, media and voice may be controlled separately.” Check the owner’s manual for your vehicle’s controls. Google’s volume guidance

Check the connection and receiver

If you use a wired connection

Try a known-good, high-quality USB cable under 1 metre (3 feet), without a hub or extension. A cable supplied by your phone’s manufacturer or one that meets USB-IF standards may be suitable; make sure it matches your phone and car’s USB port. Google recommends a suitable cable for connection quality and reliability, not as a guaranteed sound-fidelity upgrade. If the symptom is dropouts or disconnections, this is a useful connection check; it is not a universal remedy for low volume, distortion, or weak bass. Check the infotainment system

Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the car’s infotainment settings and restart the system. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s website for available firmware updates. These checks address receiver setup and reliability; they do not establish that the receiver is the cause of every audio issue. Google’s Android Auto connection troubleshooting

If you are setting up wireless Android Auto

Follow the vehicle’s pairing instructions. For initial setup, Google advises keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled; the phone and vehicle must support wireless Android Auto. This setup requirement does not show that wireless and wired connections have different sound quality. Google’s Android Auto setup instructions

Compare sources without changing several settings at once

If the problem remains, make controlled comparisons where your equipment allows them. Keep the vehicle’s sound settings in mind, and change only one factor at a time so you can tell whether the symptom follows the app, connection, or output source.

  • Compare two compatible media apps, preferably using the same track or similar content.
  • Compare Android Auto playback with another car audio source.
  • If your vehicle supports both, compare wired and wireless Android Auto and note whether the symptom follows one connection.
  • Distinguish a media-volume issue from a navigation or voice-volume issue.

Avoid changing equalizer, normalization, codec, or gain settings together. The official guidance cited here documents app compatibility, volume controls, connection troubleshooting, receiver checks, and bug reporting; it does not establish a general Android Auto audio-fidelity control or a universal defect. A Google Help Community post about bad audio is user-generated and may be unverified or out of date, so it cannot validate a diagnosis or setting for your car.

Report a repeatable problem to Google

If the same issue persists after the checks above, record the details that make it reproducible: phone model and Android version, vehicle and receiver, wired or wireless connection, media app, and whether another app or Bluetooth-only playback changes the symptom. Those comparisons help describe the problem but do not prove its cause.

Google provides a process to submit an Android Auto bug report. Capture the report soon after reproducing the issue, and keep the phone connected until capture and sending are complete.
