Android can temporarily disable an unused app—especially on Samsung phones—so it remains visible on the phone but disappears from the Android Auto launcher. If that does not restore it, check whether the app actually supports Android Auto, review the launcher configuration, verify vehicle and phone compatibility, and test the USB data connection when your car uses wired Android Auto.
The key distinction is whether one app is missing or nearly every app is missing. One missing app usually points to app eligibility or battery-based disabling. Several missing apps point more often to launcher settings, a failed connection, or compatibility.

Why an installed app can be missing
Android Auto has its own app eligibility list
The Android Auto launcher is not a mirror of the phone’s app drawer. It lists apps that declare support for Android Auto, including supported navigation, media, and communication categories. Installing an ordinary Android app does not automatically make it available on the car screen.

Android developers expose car support through an activity intent filter that includes the android.intent.category.CAR_LAUNCHER category. If the developer has not declared that category, Android Auto has no approved car-launcher entry to display. A web page saved to the home screen and a Play Store link are not equivalent to a car-compatible application; selecting either normally opens on the phone instead.
Battery management can temporarily disable an app
Google’s Android Auto Help explains that apps may be temporarily disabled and therefore absent from the Android Auto app launcher. Samsung phones can temporarily disable apps that have not been used. The app may still be visible in the phone’s app list, which makes the problem look like an Android Auto fault even though the phone has put the app to sleep.
The car may require a particular connection mode
Some vehicles support wireless Android Auto, some support wired Android Auto, and some support both. Older Uconnect 4 systems or earlier may require a USB connection. In a wired setup, a cable that charges the phone but does not carry data cannot establish Android Auto, so no launcher can appear regardless of which apps are installed.
Fix 1: Open the missing app on your phone
This is the safest first step because it reactivates an app that Android has marked as unused without deleting data or changing vehicle settings.
- Disconnect from Android Auto or park the vehicle safely.
- Unlock the phone and open the app that is missing from the car launcher.
- Leave it open long enough to reach its normal home screen. If it asks for an update, sign-in, permission, or first-run setup, complete that on the phone.
- Close the app or leave it in the background, then reconnect Android Auto.
- Open the app launcher on the vehicle display and look for the app again.
If the app returns, Android had likely treated it as unused or disabled. If it remains absent while other supported apps are visible, continue with the eligibility and battery checks below.

Fix 2: Remove unused-app battery restrictions
Samsung phones
Samsung’s labels can vary slightly by One UI release, but look in battery or device-care settings for controls named Auto disable unused apps and Put unused apps to sleep. These settings can disable or suspend an app that has not been opened recently.
- Open Settings on the phone.
- Use Settings search for unused apps, or open the battery, device-care, or app-management area.
- Review the list of sleeping, deep-sleeping, or automatically disabled apps.
- Remove the missing app from that list, or turn off the setting that automatically disables unused apps if you need the app to remain available.
- Open the app once, reconnect Android Auto, and check the launcher.
On other Android phones, the wording may be Pause app activity if unused, Unused apps, App hibernation, or a manufacturer-specific battery optimizer. Search Settings for “unused,” “sleeping,” or the app name. Do not disable battery optimization for every app by default; exempt only the app that Android Auto needs, because unrestricted background activity can increase battery use.
How to tell whether battery management was responsible
- The app is still installed and visible in the phone’s app drawer.
- Opening it immediately makes it usable on the phone.
- The app reappears in Android Auto after you launch it and reconnect.
- The problem returns after a long period without using the app.
If opening the app and removing the sleep restriction make no difference, do not keep changing battery settings. Check whether the developer supports Android Auto.
Fix 3: Check the Android Auto launcher configuration
Android Auto has a phone-side settings page where launcher entries can be reviewed. The official path is:
Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto

- Open that path while the phone is unlocked.
- Choose the option for customizing, configuring, or changing the launcher. The exact button label can differ by Android version.
- Look for the missing app in the available launcher list.
- If the app is listed but disabled or hidden, enable it and move it into a visible position if the interface offers ordering.
- Reconnect Android Auto and check the vehicle display.
This screen can only expose apps that Android Auto recognizes as compatible. If the app is not present in the launcher configuration at all, the issue is usually eligibility, app state, or compatibility rather than ordering.
Fix 4: Confirm that the app supports Android Auto
Phone installation is not enough
Android Auto deliberately limits the car screen to supported app categories and approved interaction patterns. An app can work perfectly on a phone yet have no Android Auto launcher entry. This is common with utilities, shopping apps, games, web shortcuts, and apps whose developer has not implemented a car interface.
For parked apps, Android Developers documents that support is declared by including android.intent.category.CAR_LAUNCHER in an activity intent filter. Without that declaration, Android Auto does not treat the app as a launchable car app.
Recognize phone-only shortcuts
A shortcut to a website, a browser bookmark, or a Play Store intent may look like an installed app icon on the phone. Those entries do not become Android Auto apps. When selected, they open on the phone because they lack the car-launcher declaration and the safety controls required for the vehicle display.
Check the developer’s support statement
Look at the app’s official help page or Play Store description for explicit Android Auto support. “Works on Android” or “available on mobile” does not establish car compatibility. A listing that names Android Auto, a supported category such as navigation or media, and a compatible release is stronger evidence.

If the developer does not claim Android Auto support and the app is missing from the launcher configuration, there is no phone setting that can force it to appear. Reinstalling the app, clearing Android Auto data, or buying a different cable cannot add the required developer declaration.
Fix 5: Verify vehicle and phone compatibility
Android Auto availability depends on the phone, the vehicle or head unit, the Android Auto connection mode, and sometimes the specific USB port. Check Google’s official vehicle compatibility information for your exact vehicle and model year rather than assuming that a trim level or a similar dashboard supports it.
Vehicle checks
- Confirm that Android Auto is listed for the vehicle or aftermarket head unit, not merely Bluetooth calling or audio streaming.
- Check whether the system supports wireless Android Auto, wired Android Auto, or only one of those modes.
- Use the USB port marked for smartphone integration or Android Auto. A second port may provide power only.
- For older Uconnect systems, including Uconnect 4 or earlier in some vehicles, follow the manufacturer’s wired-USB requirement.
Phone checks
- Use a compatible Android phone with Android Auto available in your region and on your device.
- Install pending updates for Android Auto and the missing app from the Play Store.
- Keep the phone unlocked during the first connection so permission prompts cannot block setup.
- Accept prompts requesting access to contacts, notifications, location, microphone, or other functions that the supported app requires.
Compatibility information is not a guarantee that every app will appear. It only establishes that the phone and vehicle can run Android Auto; the individual app still needs Android Auto support.

When the vehicle requires wired Android Auto, troubleshoot the data path before troubleshooting the app list. A charging-only cable can power the phone while preventing Android Auto from starting.
- Park the vehicle and turn on the infotainment system.
- Use a short, undamaged USB cable rated for data. A USB-C connector alone does not prove that the cable carries data.
- Connect directly to the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable port, not through a hub, extension, or adapter unless the vehicle manufacturer specifically allows it.
- Unlock the phone and accept the Android Auto permission prompts.
- If nothing happens, try a second known-good data cable and, where available, the vehicle’s other smartphone-integration port.
- Inspect the phone and vehicle ports for lint, bent contacts, looseness, or moisture. Do not insert metal objects into the port.
- Restart the phone and infotainment system, then repeat the direct connection.
A suitable cable can restore a wired connection, but it cannot make an incompatible app appear. If Android Auto starts and other apps are present while one app remains absent, return to the eligibility and battery sections.

Fix 7: Reconnect in a controlled order
When multiple supported apps are missing, reset the connection state without immediately erasing vehicle settings.
- End the current Android Auto session and unplug the USB cable if connected.
- Restart the phone.
- Turn the vehicle infotainment system fully off and back on. If the manufacturer’s instructions provide a specific restart procedure, use that procedure.
- Open the missing app on the phone once.
- Open Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto and review the launcher configuration.
- Reconnect using the supported wireless process or a known-good USB data cable.
- Check whether the launcher now shows the expected supported apps.
Only consider clearing Android Auto app data or resetting vehicle connectivity after these checks. A reset can remove paired phones, permissions, launcher ordering, and other preferences. It will not add Android Auto support to a phone-only app.
Use the symptom to choose the next branch
Only one app is missing
Open the app, remove any unused-app or sleep restriction, and confirm that the developer declares Android Auto support. If the app is not in the launcher configuration after those checks, treat it as unsupported until the developer says otherwise.

Review the launcher configuration, verify that Android Auto is actually connected, and check the vehicle and phone requirements. In a wired setup, test the cable and correct USB port. Battery restrictions can affect multiple apps, so inspect sleeping or auto-disabled lists if the problem began after a period of inactivity.
The launcher is empty or Android Auto will not start
Start with compatibility and connection checks rather than app-level fixes. Confirm the vehicle supports Android Auto, the phone is compatible, the correct connection mode is being used, and required permissions have been granted.
The app appears on the phone but not in the car after an update
Open the app after the update, complete any new sign-in or permission flow, and inspect the launcher configuration. If the developer removed or changed Android Auto support, only an updated compatible release can restore the entry.
What not to do
- Do not assume every Play Store app belongs in the Android Auto launcher.
- Do not use a phone-only web shortcut as evidence that the app supports Android Auto.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall an app before checking unused-app battery controls.
- Do not buy a cable as a fix for an app that lacks the
CAR_LAUNCHERdeclaration. - Do not reset the vehicle system while the problem is limited to one unsupported app.
- Do not disable all battery protections unless you have a specific reason; target the affected app instead.
How to prevent the app from disappearing again
- Open apps you rely on in the car periodically so the phone does not classify them as unused.
- Exclude essential Android Auto apps from the phone’s unused-app or deep-sleep list.
- Keep Android Auto and supported apps updated.
- Keep one known-good USB data cable in the vehicle if your system requires wired Android Auto.
- Remember which USB port supports smartphone integration.
- When installing a new app, verify explicit Android Auto support before expecting a launcher icon.
What the available documentation does—and does not—quantify
Google’s Android Auto Help and Android Developers documentation explain the launcher, temporary app disabling, the CAR_LAUNCHER declaration, and compatibility requirements. They do not publish a named failure-rate statistic showing how often each cause occurs. The practical decision is therefore symptom-based: check app state and eligibility for one missing app, and check launcher, connection, and compatibility for several missing apps.
