To block apps from gathering unnecessary data on Android, review each app’s permissions, grant only the access it needs, and adjust ad-privacy settings separately. Android’s controls can limit access to sensitive information and sensors, but they are not a universal switch for every kind of data an app may transmit.
How to see which permissions apps have used
- Open Settings and search for Privacy dashboard. Depending on your phone, it may be under Privacy or Security and privacy.
- Choose a permission, such as location, camera, or microphone, to see which apps accessed it and when.
- Tap an app in the list to review or change its permission.
The history window depends on Android version: Google documents seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. Menus and labels can differ by manufacturer and software version, so use Settings search if the path does not match your phone. Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions explain what the dashboard shows.

Choose the least access that still lets each app work
For every permission, ask whether the app needs it for a feature you actually use. Deny access without a clear purpose; if the app needs access only for a task, choose a temporary or limited option when available.
Recommended Free Tools
| Choice | What it does | Possible impact |
|---|---|---|
| Deny | Blocks that permission for the app. | The related feature may stop working or become less useful. |
| Allow only while using the app | Limits access to periods when you are actively using the app. | Features that need background access may not work as expected. |
| Only this time | Grants temporary access for a single use where offered. | The app may ask again the next time it needs the permission. |
Use approximate location when precision is unnecessary
If an app only needs to identify a nearby place or provide local information, approximate location may be enough. Choose precise location only when the feature genuinely requires it, such as turn-by-turn navigation. Android’s permission controls and privacy settings are described at Android privacy settings and permissions.

Turn off camera or microphone access device-wide
Supported Android versions offer system-wide camera and microphone controls, usually in Quick Settings or Privacy settings. These switches affect access across apps, rather than changing one app’s permission. An app that depends on the sensor will lose that function while access is off.
What privacy indicators can—and cannot—tell you
Android displays indicators when apps use the camera or microphone on Android 12 and higher. Location indicator behavior varies by Android version; the Android Open Source Project documentation describes it for Android 17 and higher, so do not assume every Android phone shows the same location indicator. Android’s privacy-indicator documentation details the supported behavior.

Indicators and the Privacy dashboard are useful for spotting certain sensitive access. They do not provide a complete record of all network traffic, nor do they stop an app from sending data it can access through other permitted means.
Turn off Android ad-privacy options separately
Ad settings are separate from app permissions. Google documents this path: Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy. There you can turn off ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement. The exact menu may vary as features roll out and device software differs; search Settings for “Ads” if needed. See Google’s instructions for managing ad privacy settings.

These controls limit particular ad-related uses; they do not promise ad-free use. Removing topics or blocking app suggestions may not eliminate ads related to those topics or apps.
Check an app’s disclosures before installing
On Google Play, open an app’s listing and review its Data safety section. It summarizes the developer’s disclosures about the app’s data practices, which can help you compare options before installing. It is disclosure information, not a technical control that blocks collection, and it does not replace checking the permissions an app requests. Google explains the section at Understand app privacy and security practices with Google Play’s Data safety section.

What an advertising ID opt-out can—and cannot—do
Do not treat deleting or limiting an advertising identifier as a way to stop all tracking. A 2024 preprint by Sebastian Zimmeck, Nishant Aggarwal, Zachary Liu, and Konrad Kollnig analyzed network traffic from 1,811 top-free apps in the US Google Play Store. The authors reported that neither Android AdID nor Global Privacy Control had a substantial impact on observed data selling and sharing practices in that sample. That finding is specific to the study’s apps and method; it does not establish that these controls have no value in every context. Read the study.

A practical order for your privacy audit
- Use the Privacy dashboard to identify apps accessing sensitive permissions.
- For each app, deny permissions it does not need; use while-in-use, one-time, or approximate-location options where suitable.
- Use system-wide camera or microphone switches when you want those sensors unavailable across apps.
- Review ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement in Ads privacy.
- Check Data safety disclosures before installing new apps, then assess the permissions the app requests.
