If your Roku is stuck on “Installing final updates,” first check that it is connected to the right Wi-Fi network and that the internet works. Then wait briefly and retry, restart the Roku and router, and run a manual update check. Try Ethernet or another internet connection if the problem continues. Contact Roku Support before considering a factory reset, which erases device settings and requires setup again.
Why a Roku update may stall
Roku says a streaming device needs a stable internet connection to update. A weak or interrupted connection is one possibility, but an update service may also be temporarily unavailable. The steps below start with reversible checks and leave the data-erasing reset for last.

Roku streaming devices check for software updates during initial setup, whenever powered on, and randomly every 24–36 hours. You can also check manually. See Roku’s software update guidance.

Try these five fixes in order
1. Wait briefly, then retry
Give the update a few minutes, then try again. Roku recommends retrying later when an update error may be caused by temporary service unavailability. Check Roku Support’s update troubleshooting page for any reported service alert. That page is for Roku streaming devices, not Roku Smart Home firmware, which has separate instructions.

2. Check the network and internet connection
- Confirm the Roku is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use.
- On a phone or computer connected to the same router, open a website. If it does not load, troubleshoot the internet connection before retrying the Roku update.
- If the internet works but the Roku signal may be weak, move the device closer to the router and reduce obstructions. Avoid placing a streaming player behind the TV if that blocks its signal.
Roku’s connection-check instructions explain how to check the device’s network connection.
3. Restart the Roku and router
Unplug the Roku player or TV, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect it. Restart the router as well; Roku recommends waiting 20–30 seconds before plugging it back in. Once both devices are back online, retry the update.

If the Roku interface is accessible, you can restart from Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart. Menu labels may vary by model or software version.
4. Run a manual update check; test another connection if needed
- From the Roku Home screen, open Settings > System > System update > Check now.
- If your Roku model has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and try the update again. Ethernet is an option only for models that support it; Roku’s internet connection guidance covers Wi-Fi and Ethernet setup.
- If the update still fails, try another internet source, such as a mobile hotspot. If the Roku updates on the alternate connection, the home network is a likely factor, though that result does not identify which network component is responsible.
5. Contact Roku Support before a factory reset
If the update continues to fail, contact Roku Support for help. A factory reset should be a last resort: it removes preferences, unlinks the device from your Roku account, removes apps and account information, and requires guided setup again. Have your Roku account credentials and Wi-Fi details ready if you proceed. See Roku’s factory reset instructions.
