It changes animation playback—not the phone’s processor speed or the time apps need to do work—so treat it as a quick interface adjustment, not a hardware fix.
What the animation change does—and what it doesn’t
Android’s developer documentation says a lower Window animation scale or Transition animation scale makes that animation play faster. Google’s consumer guidance, published June 26, 2025, says reducing animation scales can make a device feel faster and more responsive.

The distinction matters: a shorter transition can make navigation feel snappier, but the sources do not establish a benchmark, percentage improvement, or change in processing speed. If apps still take a long time to load or freeze, changing animations will not address the underlying cause.

Look for the animation controls in Developer options. Menu names and paths differ across Android versions and phone manufacturers, so there is no single sequence that applies to every device.

- Open Developer options. If the menu is not visible, Android’s guide to enabling developer settings explains that the Build number is used to enable them. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions for the exact steps on your model.
- Find the animation controls. Look for Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and, if available, Animator duration scale. The Android Developers guide describes the first two as controls for animation playback speed.
- Reduce the scales you want to change. A lower scale shortens playback. Choose a modest reduction if you want to keep some motion; disabling animations entirely is not necessary for this adjustment.
- Try ordinary navigation. Open and switch between menus or screens to see whether the shorter transitions suit you. If the result feels abrupt, return to the controls and choose a less drastic setting.
The official sources explain the effect of lowering a scale but do not prescribe a particular numerical value. Avoid changing unrelated Developer options in an attempt to speed up the phone.
If the phone is still slow
Persistent lag calls for troubleshooting the device, not just shortening animations. Google’s slow-device guidance recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step, checking for Android and app updates, reviewing storage, and using safe mode to investigate whether a downloaded app is causing trouble.

- Check available storage. Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free. That is a general troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that freeing space will fix a particular phone.
- Review apps. If the slowdown began after installing an app, safe mode can help you check whether a downloaded app is involved. Follow the instructions for your phone if Google’s general steps do not match its menus.
- Understand cache before clearing it. Google’s storage guide explains that clearing an app’s cache removes temporary data; the app may be slower the next time it opens. Clearing storage is different: it permanently deletes that app’s data. Do not clear app storage indiscriminately.
Android settings vary by manufacturer and version. If a menu or troubleshooting step is missing, use the phone maker’s instructions rather than changing unfamiliar settings.
