CBA Classic Cover Pet Insurance: What Australian Owners Should Know

CBA Classic Cover combines broad illness cover with protection for a defined list of injuries—not every accident. CHOICE’s public review lists a $15,000 annual benefit limit, a choice of 70% or 80% reimbursement, and a $0 or $200 excess. Those details are a useful starting point, but the public review is not the insurance contract, and its numeric scores are member-only. Check the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), quote and eligibility for your pet before deciding.

What does CBA Classic Cover cover?

CHOICE describes CBA Classic Cover as limited injury and comprehensive illness cover for cats and dogs. It identifies CBA as the insurer and PetSure (Australia) Pty Ltd as the underwriter. The word “limited” matters: injury protection applies to specified events in the review, rather than automatically covering every accident. Illness cover is broader but subject to waiting periods, limits and the policy wording. CHOICE’s public review is a consumer summary, not a substitute for the current PDS.

Specified injuries

The review lists cover for specified injuries including motor vehicle incidents; burns or electrocution; reactions to insect, spider or scorpion bites; bone fractures and traumatic tooth fractures; snake-bite toxicity; ingestion of foreign objects; poisoning; traumatic ligament or tendon injuries; bite or fight wound abscesses; traumatic lacerations or abrasions; and cruciate ligament conditions. This list should not be read as cover for any injury: check the PDS definitions and exclusions for the event affecting your pet.

Illnesses and exclusions

CHOICE lists cancer, heart, ear, eye, skin, hereditary, intervertebral disc and patella luxation conditions, among others, as covered, subject to policy terms and limits. Parasite-caused illness is listed as covered, with tick paralysis capped at $4,000. Pregnancy and obstetrics are listed as not covered. The review also says some pre-existing conditions may become eligible if they were temporary, fully cured and symptom-free for 18 months; whether a particular condition meets that test depends on the policy wording and the insurer’s assessment.

What are the limits, reimbursement options and waiting periods?

CHOICE lists a maximum annual benefit of $15,000, a choice of 70% or 80% of the vet bill, and excess options of $0 or $200. Its reviewed page does not state a publication year for these specifications, so treat them as details to verify against the current quote and PDS rather than guaranteed current terms.

Item CHOICE-listed term
Maximum annual benefit $15,000
Benefit level 70% or 80% of the vet bill, according to the selected level
Excess choice $0 or $200
Specified injuries No waiting period listed
Illness 30-day waiting period
Cruciate conditions Six-month waiting period listed
Optional dental cover Six-month waiting period listed

The percentage, excess and applicable limits affect what you pay, but this summary is not enough to calculate a claim: the claim must also meet policy definitions and any sublimits. Confirm how the current PDS applies the excess and benefit percentage to your claim.

Consultation and joint-treatment sublimits

The review lists vet consultations up to $400. Cruciate ligament conditions are capped at $4,000 per leg, with a six-month waiting period. The listed cruciate conditions include partial or complete rupture, meniscal tears, looseness and complications following surgery. Hip joint surgery or replacement is listed up to $4,000 per hip. These are sublimits within the policy, not additional annual benefit amounts.

How do dental and optional benefits work?

Dental cover

Default cover includes traumatic tooth fracture, oral tumours and stomatitis, according to CHOICE. Optional dental cover is bundled with other extras, has a listed cap of $2,000 and a six-month waiting period. The public review names eligible conditions including gingivitis, abscesses, infection-related dental disease, retained deciduous teeth, cavities and fractured teeth, but says treatment for some conditions is limited to tooth removal. It lists odontoclastic resorptive lesions, corrective or cosmetic dental surgery, crowns, orthodontics and root canals as excluded. Annual routine dental check-ups are required.

Other optional benefits

CHOICE lists optional routine care at up to $150 per year, including up to $50 for listed items such as desexing, vaccinations or health checks, microchipping, heartworm prevention, teeth cleaning, prescription diets, registration fees and parasite control. Optional behavioural-condition cover and alternative therapies are each listed up to $2,000; their limits are combined with dental cover. Check the current PDS for which extras can be selected together and exactly how the shared limits apply.

The review also lists 24/7 text or video vet telehealth. Lost-animal cover and legal liability are listed as not covered.

Who can apply, and what should owners verify?

CHOICE lists new-cover eligibility for cats and dogs from 8 weeks to 8 years old. Because the public page does not establish current eligibility for every pet or location, confirm the age rules and any pet-specific conditions when obtaining a quote.

  • Ask whether your pet’s age, breed and medical history meet the current eligibility rules.
  • Read the PDS definitions for specified injuries, illness, pre-existing conditions and exclusions.
  • Check the waiting periods and the sublimits for consultations, cruciate treatment, hip treatment and dental claims.
  • Confirm which optional extras are available, their individual caps and how combined limits operate.
  • Compare quotes using the same pet details and location, and account for the selected benefit percentage and excess.

How can you make a claim?

CHOICE lists four claim routes: a customer web portal, an e-claim submitted by the vet, GapOnly at participating veterinary practices, or a mailed claim form. GapOnly is not available at every vet; it depends on the practice participating. The review lists its availability as Monday to Saturday, 8am–10pm AET, excluding NSW public holidays. Confirm current operating hours and claim steps with the insurer before relying on that option.

What does CHOICE’s review establish?

The public CHOICE page provides the specifications summarized here, but hides its expert, cover and out-of-pocket scores behind membership. It does not provide a public numeric score to cite, and it does not establish the premium for your pet. Use it as a consumer-review overview, then rely on the current PDS and your own quote to assess the actual cover and cost.
