If you forgot the Steam Deck’s desktop sudo password, Steam’s documentation does not describe a self-service way to recover an already-set password. The passwd command in Steam’s instructions is for setting a password while signed in to the desktop session; it is not a documented forgotten-password reset. Before choosing recovery, know that a SteamOS password is separate from your Steam account login, and Steam’s recovery options have different effects on local data.
First, check which password you forgot
The sudo password belongs to the Steam Deck’s local SteamOS desktop account. It is not your Steam account password, so changing or recovering your Steam login does not recover the desktop password. Steam says the desktop account ships without a password; once a password has been assigned, the desktop account can use sudo.

If you can still sign in to the desktop session and only need to assign a password, Steam’s Desktop FAQ says to open a terminal and run passwd, then follow the prompts to set a secure password. That is setup guidance for a session you can access, not a documented method for replacing a password you have already forgotten. Do not assume that running passwd from a terminal will bypass the existing password requirement.

Choose recovery based on what you need to preserve
Steam documents several SteamOS recovery choices, and they are not equivalent. A rollback retains user data. Repair SteamOS attempts to preserve games and personal content. Factory Reset and Erase User Data clear local user data, while Re-image Device wipes user information and installed content.

The preservation language matters: Repair SteamOS attempts to keep games and personal content; it is not a guarantee. Steam’s documentation describes rollback as retaining user data, but does not say that any of these options resets a forgotten sudo password. Review Steam’s current recovery guidance before selecting an action.

Use Steam’s recovery environment
If you decide to try recovery, Steam’s instructions use recovery media prepared on a USB drive. The drive must be at least 8 GB, and writing the recovery image formats it, so use a drive whose contents you are willing to erase. You can connect it to the Deck’s free USB port; a hub with USB-A is only needed if your setup requires one.

- Connect the recovery USB key to the Deck, directly or through a compatible hub if needed, and start the Deck from the recovery media using Steam’s documented boot procedure.
- In the recovery environment, read the descriptions and select the option that matches your goal. Choose Repair SteamOS if you want an option that attempts to preserve games and personal content. Select a rollback only if returning to a previous SteamOS version is appropriate. Do not select Factory Reset, Erase User Data, or Re-image Device if you are not prepared for their stated data-clearing effects.
Steam’s published recovery documentation explains operating-system recovery and data consequences; it does not establish that recovery will restore access to an already-protected desktop account. If retaining local files is essential, avoid destructive choices and consult Steam Support rather than treating a re-image as a password-reset procedure.
