Android 16’s Live Updates are one of the most useful notification changes in years: they keep an active journey visible without making you reopen an app. A rideshare, delivery, navigation session or phone call can show progress in the notification drawer, on the lock screen and, on supported devices, in a compact status-bar chip.
The catch is that installing Android 16 does not automatically give you Live Updates. The app must implement Google’s APIs, request promotion, satisfy strict eligibility rules and work with the phone maker’s system surfaces. Your notification settings can also hide, demote or block them. That gap between a polished platform feature and an inconsistent first impression is why Google can appear to have forgotten to tell anyone about Live Updates.

What Android Live Updates actually are
Live Updates are a notification format introduced with Android 16 for activities that are ongoing, user-initiated and time-sensitive. Instead of treating every notification as a separate message, Android can keep one activity current as it progresses.
Google’s examples include active turn-by-turn navigation, an ongoing phone call, a rideshare approaching your pickup point and a food order moving from restaurant to door. The important distinction is that the activity has a clear start, a changing state and an expected end. It is not simply an app trying to keep its icon permanently visible.

Where a promoted update appears
When an eligible notification is promoted, Android can place it at the top of the notification drawer, show it on the lock screen and expose a compact status-bar chip. That lets you check a driver’s arrival estimate or delivery progress with a glance rather than opening the app every few minutes.
Promoted cards are expanded by default and cannot be collapsed in the normal way. You can dismiss a Live Update or demote it back to a standard notification. Android’s developer guidance discourages an app from immediately reposting an update that you dismissed, because repeated reposting may cause you to revoke that app’s notification permission.
What the status chip communicates
The status-bar chip is intended for a compact state, icon, countdown or critical text. The implementation guidance limits it to 96dp in width. If the available space is too narrow, Android may show only the icon, so the full detail remains in the notification drawer or on the lock screen.

Some Live Updates can also bridge to compatible Wear OS devices. Whether that happens depends on the connected watch and the manufacturer’s implementation rather than on Android 16 alone.

Why the feature is useful
Traditional notifications are good at announcing an event: a driver accepted your ride, a courier picked up your order or a route changed. They are less good at representing a single activity that keeps changing for the next 20 minutes. Live Updates turn that activity into a persistent, glanceable status.
- Less app switching: progress is visible from surfaces you already check.
- Better continuity: one journey can update through several milestones instead of producing a noisy stream of messages.
- Faster decisions: an arrival estimate or navigation state can tell you whether to leave now without opening the app.
- Clearer priority: a promoted card is separated from ordinary alerts while the activity is genuinely active.
Google described the idea at I/O as “a new class of notification templates” for user-initiated journeys such as rideshares, deliveries and navigation. In its Android 16 announcement, Google used a food-delivery example: rather than opening the delivery app every five minutes, a Live Update keeps you informed in real time.
Why Android 16 does not guarantee that you will see one
There are several independent gates between the operating system and the card on your screen. Android 16 is necessary, but it is only the first gate.

Live Updates are not an automatic makeover for every existing notification. The developer must build an eligible notification, request promotion and update the activity as its state changes. An app that has not added Android 16 support will continue to use ordinary notifications even on a fully updated phone.

The phone maker controls additional surfaces
Google defines the platform behavior, but manufacturers decide how their system UI exposes it. Google’s rollout announcement called out Samsung’s Now Bar and OPPO and OnePlus Live Alerts as ecosystem surfaces. Those names do not mean every model from those brands, region or software build exposes the same behavior.
Users and channels can block promotion
Notification permission, notification channels and any available promoted-notification control can prevent a card from appearing. A user can also demote or dismiss an update. Battery-management or background restrictions may interfere with an app’s ability to post timely changes, although the exact behavior varies by manufacturer.
Rollout started in stages
Google’s June 10, 2025 Android 16 announcement said supported Pixel devices were first, with other brands following later that year. It also said the initial app ecosystem would begin with compatible rideshare and food-delivery services. A phone that received Android 16 later, or an app that had not yet shipped support, could therefore show no visible change.

Android’s promotion system is deliberately constrained. The purpose is to reserve prominent surfaces for active journeys, not to give every app a louder advertising channel.

ProgressStyle is the main journey format
ProgressStyle is designed for progress-centric activities. Developers represent milestones with points and connect them with segments, allowing the notification to communicate stages rather than only a percentage. For example, a delivery could move from restaurant acceptance to preparation, pickup and arrival.
Other eligible styles serve different cases: CallStyle fits an ongoing call, while MetricStyle can represent a changing measurement. Eligibility does not mean an app should use a style merely to gain prominence; the activity still has to meet Google’s ongoing, user-initiated and time-sensitive guidance.
What belongs in a Live Update—and what does not

Google specifically says not to use Live Updates to offer accelerated access to app functionality. Prominence is justified by an active journey, not by the desire to place a shortcut at the top of the user’s screen.

How to turn on Live Updates as a user
There is no universal switch that can create support where an app or phone does not provide it. You can, however, remove the common blockers.

- Confirm the phone is running Android 16. Open the phone’s system information or software-update page and check the Android version. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
- Install the latest version of the relevant app. Live Updates require app-side implementation, so an older build may not include the feature.
- Allow the app’s notifications. In the app’s notification settings, make sure its relevant channel is enabled and not set to minimum importance.
- Look for a promoted-notification control. Android or the phone maker may expose a setting for promoted notifications or Live Updates. The label and location differ across devices; if no such control exists, the OEM may manage promotion automatically.
- Start a supported activity. Begin navigation, request a rideshare, place a delivery order or make a call. A dormant app cannot produce an ongoing update.
- Check the lock screen and notification drawer. Some phones expose the feature in an OEM surface such as a Now Bar or Live Alerts area rather than presenting an identical Android interface.
- Do not dismiss the card if you still need it. Dismissing or demoting it tells the system that the prominent presentation is unwanted.
If nothing appears
- The app may not support Android 16 Live Updates yet.
- Your phone model or regional software build may not expose the manufacturer’s promotion surface.
- The notification permission, channel or promoted-notification setting may be disabled.
- The activity may not qualify because it is not currently active, user-initiated or time-sensitive.
- The app may have posted a conventional notification because its implementation does not meet the promotion rules.
Updating Android and the app can resolve a version mismatch, but it cannot overcome a missing app implementation or an OEM restriction. There is no reliable sideloaded toggle that turns an ordinary notification into a legitimate Live Update.
Android Live Updates versus iPhone Live Activities
The two names describe a similar user goal: keeping a changing activity visible without repeatedly opening its app. Android Live Updates are nevertheless an Android 16 notification class with Android-specific styles, permission requirements and manufacturer-dependent surfaces. An iPhone feature with a similar purpose should not be assumed to have identical APIs, placement, controls or app coverage.
For Android users, the practical question is not whether the concepts look alike in screenshots. It is whether the particular app, Android 16 build and phone maker support the full path from an eligible notification to a visible promoted card.
Why Google’s communication feels inadequate
Google documented the feature for developers and described it in the Android 16 launch material, so “forgot to tell anyone” is an editorial judgment about consumer visibility rather than a measured awareness statistic. The rollout itself explains the impression: the benefit appears only when several parties coordinate.
Google must ship the platform, the OEM must expose it, the app must implement and request promotion, and the user must allow notifications. Early support was also concentrated in rideshare and food-delivery apps. If any link is missing, Android 16 looks unchanged even though the underlying system is capable of much more.
That makes Live Updates brilliant in successful cases and nearly invisible in unsuccessful ones. A reader can understand the feature only by distinguishing the Android version from the app support and the manufacturer’s interface.
