Its interior stayed extremely dark green while burial gradually built a roughly millimeter-thick, mirror-like surface patina. That color is an optical effect produced by nanometer-scale layers, not a coating of metallic gold.
Corrosion dissolved parts of the glass and minerals in the soil helped rebuild the surface as more than a thousand alternating silica-rich layers. Those ordered layers act as stacked Bragg reflectors, selectively returning light so the weathered surface appears blue, green, red and, over broad areas, metallic gold.

What was found near Aquileia
An archaeological field-walking discovery
The fragment was recovered in 2012 from clay-rich plowed soil outside ancient Aquileia in northeastern Italy. It is held by the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Aquileia under inventory number 591681. The find came from an ordinary archaeological survey rather than a controlled laboratory experiment, which makes the optical structure especially striking: two millennia of burial created a material that resembles an engineered photonic coating.
Laser-ablation mass spectrometry identified the bulk as typical Roman silica–soda–lime glass. Chemical signatures point to Egyptian sands as the raw material used for manufacture. The glass was made sometime between the first century BCE and the first century CE, while the altered surface formed during the roughly two-thousand-year burial interval described by the investigators and Tufts’ institutional account.

The interior and the surface tell different color stories
Inside the fragment, the original glass remains an extremely dark green. Only the exposed surface changed. A patina approximately a millimeter thick developed on that surface, with blue-reflecting material closest to the intact glass and outer regions that look metallic gold. Some of the gold-looking material is fragile and can flake away, revealing that the color belongs to a distinct altered layer rather than to the glass body.
Why green glass can look metallic gold
Burial supplied the ingredients and the time
Burial placed the glass in contact with clay, rainwater, groundwater cycles, dissolved minerals and changing acidity or alkalinity. Over long periods, the original glass network slowly dissolved. Silica and other components then reprecipitated as the chemistry at the surface shifted. The process is best described as corrosion followed by reconstruction: material was removed from the glass, and new mineral-rich silica structures formed in its place.
This was not a single, uniform film. Chemical gradients through the patina produced alternating regions of relatively high and low density. The investigators observed more than a thousand ordered nanolayers, or lamellae, across the altered zone. Pores were also present, so the patina is a complex porous composite rather than a perfectly smooth sheet.

The layered arrangement emerged without carving or deposition by a human manufacturer. Dissolution, diffusion, mineral precipitation and nanoparticle organization acted together from the intact-glass boundary toward the exterior. That combination is why the result is called a natural photonic crystal: its repeating structures are on the same scale as visible-light wavelengths and therefore control how light travels through and back out of the surface.

The process is unusual because it combines top-down alteration, in which corrosion advances into the glass, with bottom-up assembly, in which silica and minerals organize into new layers. Each mechanism alone could produce a rough or cloudy weathering crust. Together they produced a highly ordered optical architecture.
How the nanolayers create the gold appearance
Each stack behaves like a Bragg reflector
A Bragg reflector is a stack of alternating optical densities. When light encounters the boundaries between those layers, selected wavelengths reflect in phase and reinforce one another, while other wavelengths are transmitted, absorbed or scattered less efficiently. The reflected color depends mainly on the spacing and refractive-index contrast of the layers.
In the Aquileia patina, neighboring stacks do not all have identical spacing. One group can favor blue wavelengths, another green, and another red. A single stack would tend to produce a narrow iridescent band. Thousands of stacks with varying dimensions broaden the combined reflected spectrum. To the eye, that mixture reads as a bright, mirror-like gold rather than as one isolated rainbow color.

The patina’s position matters. Material next to the original glass reflects blue in the measurements reported for the specimen, while layers farther outward include green- and red-reflecting structures. Flakes can therefore show different colors depending on which portion of the weathered stack remains attached and how light strikes it. The visible effect is structural coloration: the same underlying chemistry can appear different when its layer spacing or viewing geometry changes.

Is the gold real metal?
No metallic-gold coating is required to explain the appearance. The gold look comes from wavelength-selective reflection by silica-rich and mineral-rich layers. Chemical analysis characterized the original Roman glass as silica–soda–lime glass; the reported mechanism does not identify a continuous layer of elemental gold responsible for the shine.
Calling the surface “gold” describes its color and reflectivity, not its precious-metal composition. A useful comparison is a soap bubble or an oil film, whose colors also arise from interference. The Aquileia specimen differs in scale and organization: instead of one thin film, it contains a thick, hierarchical patina with many ordered reflectors and a broad reflected spectrum.
What measurements show about the patina
The published measurements are reported in several ways, so the figures should not be collapsed into one falsely precise specification.

| Feature | Reported value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Patina thickness | Approximately 1 millimeter | The optical layer is vastly thicker than an ordinary single thin-film coating and contains many internal structures. |
| High-density lamellae in blue flakes | 116 ± 24 nanometers | Average measured thickness for the high-density portions associated with blue-reflecting flakes. |
| High-density lamellae in green flakes | 235 ± 38 nanometers | Larger spacing shifts the favored reflected wavelengths toward green in the measured material. |
| High-density lamellae in red flakes | 290 ± 30 nanometers | The thickest reported high-density lamellae correspond to red-reflecting flakes. |
| Lower-density lamellae | About 40–60 nanometers | Alternating low-density layers provide the optical contrast needed for Bragg reflection. |
| Pore size | Up to roughly 39 ± 16 nanometers | Shows that the patina includes nanoscale voids and is not a solid, pore-free film. |
| Reflectance | About 80% relative to a silver mirror in the paper’s measurement; approximately 90% in the PubMed abstract’s rounded summary | Both figures describe unusually strong reflection, but they come from differently worded summaries and should retain that qualification. |
| Number of ordered layers | More than 1,000 nanolayers | Many slightly different reflectors combine to broaden the visible reflection into a gold-like sheen. |
How this differs from ordinary iridescent archaeological glass
Ancient glass can develop thin weathering films that produce familiar rainbow colors. The Aquileia fragment is unusual because several independent features occur together.

| Comparison point | Typical simple iridescence | Aquileia fragment |
|---|---|---|
| Where the color resides | A relatively thin surface film over otherwise unchanged glass | A roughly millimeter-thick reconstructed patina over dark-green glass |
| Optical organization | Interference from one or a small number of layers | More than a thousand ordered, alternating-density lamellae arranged in many stacks |
| Color impression | Often narrow, angle-dependent rainbow colors | Blue, green and red bands combine into a broad mirror-like gold appearance |
| Reflectivity | Can be bright but is not generally described as mirror-like at this scale | Measured average reflectance was about 80% relative to a silver mirror, with a roughly 90% rounded value in the PubMed summary |
| Physical stability | Weathering film may remain attached or become cloudy | Outer gold-looking portions can exfoliate or flake away |
These distinctions explain why simply calling the object “iridescent Roman glass” misses the main discovery. Its significance lies in the internal order of the patina and the breadth and intensity of the reflected light.
How long did the transformation take?
There is no measured start-to-finish duration for this individual fragment. The glass was manufactured between the first century BCE and first century CE and was buried for roughly two millennia, so the alteration had centuries to develop. The investigators describe the process on geological timescales rather than assigning a precise rate to each layer or to the complete color change.
That uncertainty matters when interpreting the find. It demonstrates that burial can eventually assemble a sophisticated photonic structure, but it does not show that every Roman glass fragment will become gold-looking or that the same result can be reproduced in a short, predictable treatment. Soil chemistry, water movement, glass composition, temperature and exposure history would all affect the outcome.
Why researchers call it a natural photonic crystal
Photonic crystals are materials whose repeating refractive-index patterns control electromagnetic waves. Engineered examples are used to make narrow-band mirrors, optical filters and waveguides. The Aquileia patina meets the defining optical idea through a natural route: its silica-rich layers and pores repeat at visible-light dimensions, creating selective reflection and high brightness.

Fiorenzo Omenetto of Tufts described the specimen as a textbook example of a nanophotonic component formed while sitting in mud for two millennia. Giulia Guidetti characterized the mechanism as likely “a process of corrosion and reconstruction.” The PNAS authors referred to the result as “a sophisticated natural photonic crystal assembled by time.” Those descriptions emphasize both the optical performance and the unusual manufacturing history.
Possible technological lessons
The finding could guide future work on mirrors, optical filters, waveguides and related components if scientists learn to accelerate the geological sequence in a laboratory. A self-assembled process might create complex structures without the many fabrication steps required for conventional nanomanufacturing.
That is a research possibility, not a ready-made product. The ancient patina formed slowly under specific burial conditions, and the published work does not establish a scalable recipe, production speed, durability specification or commercial device. Reproducing the layer order while controlling composition and adhesion would be the central engineering challenge.
What the fragment teaches about archaeological materials
The specimen shows that corrosion is not always synonymous with visual degradation. In this case, chemical alteration generated a more optically organized surface than the original glass possessed. The interior preserves the maker’s dark-green material, while the exterior records a long interaction among glass, soil, water and minerals.
It also demonstrates why color alone cannot identify composition. A surface that looks metallic may contain no metal film; its appearance can be governed by geometry at nanometer scales. For conservators, the flaking gold-like layer is both scientifically valuable and physically vulnerable. Removing or polishing it would destroy the very architecture that produces the optical effect.
Bottom line
The Roman fragment changed from green to gold only at its surface. During centuries of burial near Aquileia, corrosion and mineral-driven reconstruction assembled a porous patina containing more than a thousand ordered silica-based nanolayers. Those layers act as stacked Bragg reflectors, combining narrow reflected bands into an unusually bright, broad gold appearance. It is not evidence of gilding; it is a naturally assembled photonic crystal preserved on an archaeological object.
