Ancient Giant Fungi vs. Modern Mushrooms: Size, Structure and Reproduction

Were giant mushrooms really eight metres tall? Fossils assigned to the Devonian genus Prototaxites formed columnar bodies up to about eight metres high. They were once described as giant fungi and possibly the largest land organisms before large trees evolved. That interpretation is no longer settled. A 2026 Science Advances study of Prototaxites taiti from the 407-million-year-old Rhynie chert found chemistry and internal architecture unlike known fungi and proposed an entirely extinct eukaryotic lineage.

A modern mushroom is a different kind of structure: the visible reproductive fruiting body of a fungus. Most of that fungus is a branching mycelium of microscopic hyphae growing through soil, wood, compost or another substrate. The mushroom produces spores; the mycelium performs most feeding and growth. Comparing an eight-metre fossil column with a modern mushroom therefore requires separating three questions: what the fossil was, how its body was built and how its reproduction worked. The first and third remain uncertain for Prototaxites; they can be observed directly in living mushroom-forming fungi.

How large were the “giant fungi”?

Prototaxites fossils from the Early Devonian reached approximately eight metres in height. Their size is the source of the enduring “giant fungus” story. Earlier interpretations treated these upright columns as enormous fungal bodies and described them as the largest organisms on land before large trees evolved.

That description needs two qualifications. First, eight metres is the height reported for fossilized columns, not the height of a mushroom cap and stem. The fossils are preserved biological structures whose original tissue, shape and growth pattern must be reconstructed from rock. Second, “fungus” is a historical interpretation rather than a secure modern classification. The genus name remains useful for discussing the fossils, but it should not be treated as proof that the organism was a mushroom-forming fungus.

The best-known recent material includes Prototaxites taiti preserved in the roughly 407-million-year-old Rhynie chert. The fossils show large, organized bodies, but their appearance alone cannot identify a modern biological group. A tall column can result from very different kinds of tissue, and fossilization can erase the features—such as living reproductive surfaces—that would make an identification decisive.

So the careful answer to “Were giant mushrooms eight metres tall?” is: eight-metre-tall Prototaxites fossils are real, but calling them giant mushrooms assumes an identity that current evidence does not establish.

Was Prototaxites actually a fungus?

The fungal interpretation was attractive because the fossils contain repeated tubes and bands that can resemble the filamentous construction of fungal tissues. Yet resemblance is not enough to place a fossil inside a living group. The 2026 study combined chemical analysis with detailed examination of internal anatomy and reported patterns unlike those of known fungal groups. Its authors proposed that the tested fossils belonged to an entirely extinct eukaryotic lineage.

National Museums Scotland attributes this conclusion to co-lead and first author Dr Corentin Loron: “Our study, combining analysing the chemistry and anatomy of this fossil, demonstrates that Prototaxites cannot be placed within the fungal group.” This is a statement about the evidence examined in that study, not a claim that every question about the genus has been solved. Fossil classification can change as additional specimens, preservation types or analytical methods become available.

Three positions should be kept separate:

  • Historical model: Prototaxites was interpreted as a huge fungus and sometimes described as the largest land organism of its time.
  • Current evidence from the 2026 analysis: the studied material has chemical and structural characteristics unlike known fungi, supporting placement outside the fungal group.
  • What remains unknown: the organism’s exact evolutionary relationships, physiology and complete life cycle are not securely established.

It is therefore inaccurate to draw a cap, stem, gills or familiar mushroom spores onto a Prototaxites reconstruction unless those features are explicitly identified in a particular fossil. The evidence does not provide a secure mushroom-like reproductive system.

What a modern mushroom really is

“Mushroom” describes a visible reproductive structure, not the whole fungus. In a typical mushroom-forming basidiomycete, the main feeding body is a mycelium: a network of branching hyphae extending through a substrate. Hyphae are the fine, thread-like units that grow at their tips, release digestive enzymes into surrounding material and absorb the resulting nutrients.

The mycelium: the feeding and growing body

Mycelia can occupy soil, dead wood, leaf litter, compost or other organic material. Most of the organism may be hidden from view, and its extent can be much larger than the mushroom that eventually appears at the surface. The mycelium’s job is to explore the substrate, digest usable compounds and distribute nutrients through its network.

Because the mycelium is largely concealed, people often mistake the short-lived mushroom for the entire organism. Removing a mushroom does not necessarily remove the mycelium; the network can continue living in the substrate and produce another fruiting body when conditions permit.

The fruiting body: a spore-producing structure

A mushroom is a differentiated structure built by the mycelium for sexual reproduction. Its cap, stem and fertile surfaces are arranged to expose spores to air and help them disperse. Depending on the species, spores are produced on gills, inside pores, on spines or on another specialized surface.

The visible structure is often temporary compared with the feeding mycelium. This difference in lifespan and function is why comparing a mushroom’s height directly with an ancient column can be misleading: one is a reproductive structure, while the other is a fossilized body whose biological identity is disputed.

How basidiomycete mushrooms reproduce

Not every fungus follows the same life cycle, but the standard basidiomycete sequence explains how familiar gilled and pore-bearing mushrooms make new individuals. The key terms are haploid, dikaryotic, karyogamy and meiosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Basidiospore germination: A basidiospore lands on a suitable substrate and germinates into a haploid mycelium. “Haploid” means that each cell contains one set of nuclear genetic information.
  2. Compatibility and fusion: A compatible haploid mycelium meets another compatible haploid mycelium. Their cell contents fuse in a process called plasmogamy, but the two nuclei initially remain separate.
  3. Dikaryotic growth: The fused network becomes dikaryotic: its cells carry two genetically different haploid nuclei. This mycelium can spread through the substrate and is often the long-lived phase of the fungus.
  4. Fruiting-body formation: When environmental and nutritional conditions are suitable, the dikaryotic mycelium organizes a basidiocarp—the structure people call a mushroom. Cap, stem and fertile tissues develop as parts of this reproductive architecture.
  5. Nuclear fusion: In specialized cells called basidia, the two nuclei finally fuse. This step, karyogamy, briefly creates a diploid nucleus containing paired chromosome sets.
  6. Meiosis: The diploid nucleus undergoes meiosis, reducing the chromosome number and generating genetically varied haploid nuclei.
  7. Spore release and dispersal: Basidiospores form on the basidia and are released from gills, pores, spines or another fertile surface. Air currents and other physical processes carry them to new substrates, where the cycle can begin again.

The sequence explains why a mushroom’s underside or other fertile surface matters: it is a specialized spore-producing region, not simply decorative anatomy. It also shows why a mushroom cannot be used as a synonym for the fungus. The basidiocarp is one stage and one structure in a larger organism that includes the mycelium and its earlier nuclear stages.

Ancient columns and modern mushrooms compared

The most useful comparison is by evidence and function rather than by appearance. The following table separates what is observed from what is inferred.

Comparison point Prototaxites fossils Modern mushroom-forming fungi
Scale Fossilized columns reached up to about 8 metres in the Early Devonian. Visible fruiting bodies are usually much smaller and temporary; the underlying mycelium can occupy a substantially larger area than the mushroom.
Body architecture Preserved tubes and bands form large columns, but their biological affinity is disputed. Microscopic hyphae form a mycelium, which can differentiate into a cap, stem and fertile surfaces in a basidiocarp.
Reproductive structures No reproductive system is securely identified; there is no firm evidence for gills, pores, a cap or mushroom-like spores. Basidia on gills, pores, spines or other fertile surfaces produce basidiospores after nuclear fusion and meiosis.
Life-cycle interpretation A complete life cycle cannot be reconstructed confidently from the available fossil evidence. The haploid, dikaryotic and brief diploid stages can be observed in living cultures and fruiting bodies.
Evidence type Interpretations depend on fossil anatomy, preservation and chemical signatures. Researchers can observe living growth, developmental stages, spore formation and genetic compatibility directly.

Why the size comparison can fool you

An eight-metre Prototaxites column and a modern mushroom are not equivalent measuring units. The fossil measurement refers to the height of an entire upright body. A mushroom measurement normally refers only to a fruiting body that emerges from a much larger mycelium.

Even a small cultivated mushroom can produce an enormous number of spores. Penn State Extension reported that a three-inch (Agaricus bisporus) mushroom can release about 40 million spores per hour; that figure is a 2025 educational estimate for the specified mushroom size, not a universal rate for all species. Spore output illustrates the reproductive specialization of the mushroom, whereas the mycelium supplies the growth and nutrient-absorption system behind it.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Scale also changes with the question being asked. If the question is “How tall was the visible structure?”, Prototaxites is extraordinary. If the question is “How large was the whole organism?”, a modern mycelium may extend beyond the visible mushroom, and its total dimensions cannot be inferred from cap height alone. The fossil record does not provide an equivalent, reliable measurement of the complete Prototaxites organism.

What did Prototaxites reproduce with?

No securely identified answer is available. The fossils do not preserve a confirmed system equivalent to basidia, gills, pores or another modern mushroom fertile surface. Without such structures, assigning a particular spore-producing mechanism would be speculation.

The uncertainty is not a minor missing detail. Reproductive anatomy often provides the strongest clues to how a living lineage is related to other organisms. A modern basidiomycete can be recognized through the organization of its basidia, spores and nuclear stages. For Prototaxites, the surviving evidence is dominated by fossilized body architecture and chemistry, so a complete life cycle cannot be read directly from the specimens.

That means illustrations or captions that show Prototaxites releasing familiar mushroom spores should be treated as hypothetical unless they identify a specific, documented fossil structure. The scientifically responsible reconstruction leaves the reproductive biology open.

Why did these giant organisms disappear?

The evidence does not establish a single cause. The fossil genus has no securely identified modern descendant, and the 2026 interpretation places the studied material in an extinct eukaryotic lineage. That supports the conclusion that the lineage ended, but it does not by itself reveal whether climate, substrate, competition, disturbance, reproductive failure or another ecological change caused its disappearance.

It is also too strong to say simply that trees “replaced” giant fungi. The older description placed Prototaxites among the largest land organisms before large trees evolved, which gives a useful temporal comparison. It does not demonstrate a direct competitive event or a one-step transition from columns to forests. The rise of other land plants changed habitats and nutrient flows, but the available evidence does not assign that change as the proven cause of Prototaxites extinction.

A careful explanation therefore has two parts: Prototaxites represents a remarkable Early Devonian large-bodied lineage, and its disappearance remains an open palaeobiological question. Any more specific extinction scenario should be labelled a hypothesis rather than a settled fact.

How scientists distinguish a fossil mystery from a living mushroom

Living fungi offer several independent lines of evidence. A culture can be watched as hyphae grow, compatible mycelia fuse and a fruiting body develops. Basidia and spores can be examined directly, and the chemistry of living tissue can be compared with known fungal groups.

Fossils require a different chain of reasoning. Researchers must determine which original structures survived mineralization, separate biological patterns from preservation artifacts and compare the remaining chemistry and anatomy with multiple possible lineages. The 2026 Prototaxites taiti study is significant because it combined those two fossil evidence streams—internal architecture and chemistry—rather than relying on overall shape alone.

This difference in evidence quality explains why statements about modern mushroom reproduction can be precise while statements about Prototaxites must remain qualified. The modern life cycle is observed biology. The fossil life cycle is an inference with important gaps.

Key points to remember

  • Prototaxites fossils reached about eight metres in the Early Devonian, but “giant fungus” is a historical label, not a settled classification.
  • A 2026 chemical and anatomical study found the examined fossils unlike known fungi and proposed an extinct eukaryotic lineage.
  • A mushroom is a fungus’s fruiting body; the mycelium is the branching, feeding network that makes and supports it.
  • Basidiomycete mushrooms pass through haploid and dikaryotic stages, then use karyogamy and meiosis in basidia to produce basidiospores.
  • Prototaxites has no securely known mushroom-like reproductive system, so its spores and life cycle should not be invented.
