Green anacondas are substantially heavier and more aquatic than boa constrictors. A female green anaconda can reach a cited maximum of 30 feet (9 meters), 12 inches (30.5 centimeters) in diameter and 550 pounds (250 kilograms), while a boa constrictor reaches about 13 feet (3.9 meters) and can exceed 100 pounds (45 kilograms). Both are nonvenomous boid snakes that kill prey by constriction, but they occupy different environments and hunt in different ways: green anacondas ambush animals from shallow water, whereas boa constrictors usually hunt on land, in trees or around sheltered ground cover.
“Anaconda” can refer to more than one species in popular use. The size and habitat comparison here uses the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus), the species described by the cited Smithsonian National Zoo and IUCN sources.

Are anacondas and boa constrictors the same snake?
No. They are different species, although both belong to the boa family, Boidae, and share the same basic hunting method: they seize prey with their teeth, wrap coils around it and tighten those coils until the animal can no longer maintain normal circulation.

Green anacondas are specialized for life in water. Boa constrictors are habitat generalists by comparison: they can climb, swim and shelter in many kinds of cover, but most of their activity and hunting occurs on land or in trees rather than while submerged.
Which is bigger: an anaconda or a boa constrictor?
The green anaconda is bigger by both mass and maximum reported length. The difference is especially pronounced in weight: anacondas have extremely thick bodies, while boa constrictors are long and powerful but much lighter at comparable lengths.
| Measurement | Green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) | Boa constrictor (Boa constrictor) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum figure cited | Up to 30 feet (9 m) for females | About 13 feet (3.9 m) |
| Maximum weight cited | Up to 550 pounds (250 kg) for females | More than 100 pounds (45 kg) |
| Maximum diameter cited | 12 inches (30.5 cm) | Not stated by the cited source |
| Sex difference | Females are much larger than males; the 30-foot and 550-pound figures are female maximums | The cited figure does not provide a comparable sex-specific maximum |
These are maximum capabilities, not average measurements. A 30-foot anaconda is an exceptional upper-end animal, and the figure should not be used to describe every green anaconda encountered in the wild. Likewise, “about 13 feet” describes the upper size cited for boa constrictors, not the length of every adult.
Why anacondas become so heavy
Body mass is the most useful visual distinction. Green anacondas have a broad, heavy trunk suited to pushing through water and overpowering relatively large prey. Their aquatic lifestyle also lets a very large snake support much of its weight with buoyancy. On land, that same mass would be cumbersome; in water, it helps the snake remain stable while it waits and wrestles.
Why length alone can mislead
Comparing only tape-measure length understates the difference. Two snakes can be similar in length yet differ greatly in girth and weight. In this comparison, the green anaconda’s cited maximum weight is more than five times the boa constrictor figure of over 100 pounds. The anaconda’s 12-inch diameter figure also conveys how unusually thick the largest females can be.
Where do green anacondas live?
Green anacondas live in northern South America, especially across the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Their favored settings are shallow, slow-moving water and the wet landscapes connected to it.

Smithsonian’s National Zoo describes green anacondas as well adapted to aquatic life. Their eyes and nostrils sit on top of the head, allowing a snake to keep most of its body underwater while watching and breathing at the surface. That arrangement is an adaptation for ambush, not evidence that the animal is permanently aquatic: green anacondas can leave the water, move through vegetation and rest on land.

In murky or plant-filled water, an anaconda can remain nearly hidden and approach prey with only its head exposed. Water also provides an escape route and helps support the snake’s mass during a struggle. The animal’s camouflage, body strength and ability to hold position in slow-moving water combine into a sit-and-wait strategy.
Where do boa constrictors live?
Boa constrictors have a far broader geographic range, extending from northern Mexico through Central America and into South America as far south as Argentina, according to the Smithsonian National Zoo. Within that range they use a wide variety of landscapes:
- Tropical and subtropical forests
- Savannas and open woodland
- Cultivated fields and disturbed areas
- Some dry or desert environments
Individual boas may spend time on the ground, in low vegetation or in trees. Hollow logs, burrows, rock gaps and other cover provide shelter. This flexibility is why a boa constrictor should not be pictured as a water specialist even though it can swim competently.
Do boa constrictors live in water?
They can enter and cross water, but water is not their primary hunting environment. Boa constrictors are mainly terrestrial or arboreal. They use land cover, tree branches and concealed resting places more often than they use submerged ambush positions.

The practical distinction is habitat preference rather than ability. A green anaconda seeks wet landscapes as a core part of its ecology; a boa constrictor may encounter ponds, streams or flooded ground while living mainly among forest, savanna, fields or dry cover.

How do their hunting and feeding behaviors differ?
Both snakes are ambush predators. Neither uses venom to subdue prey. Instead, each relies on a rapid strike, backward-curving teeth that hold the animal and powerful coils that restrict circulation.
Green anaconda prey and ambushes
Green anacondas can take prey ranging from fish and birds to much larger animals, including capybaras, caimans and deer. The combination of aquatic concealment and exceptional body mass allows them to tackle prey that would be difficult for a lighter snake to overpower.
A typical aquatic ambush involves the snake remaining still near the edge or beneath the surface, then striking when an animal comes within range. After the bite, the anaconda uses coils to restrain the prey. It does not need to crush bones; the critical effect is physiological, as constriction can prevent normal blood flow to the brain.

Boa constrictors more often take birds, bats, rodents, rats, squirrels, lizards and opossums. Their prey list reflects a mixed land-and-tree lifestyle. A boa may wait beside a trail, in a hollow log, among roots or on a branch, then strike a passing animal at close range.
Boa constrictors are mainly nocturnal. Darkness reduces the chance of being detected and brings many of their mammalian prey into motion. Their ability to climb lets them hunt above the ground, while their muscular bodies also make them effective terrestrial ambushers.
What “constriction” actually does
Smithsonian’s National Zoo explains that boa constrictor constriction causes a “circulatory arrest” by preventing blood from flowing normally to the brain. The same general mechanism applies to constricting boas such as green anacondas: coils are positioned and tightened around the prey’s body, rapidly disrupting circulation. The process is not the movie-style image of a snake repeatedly crushing an animal’s bones.

How are their bodies adapted to their environments?
Green anaconda adaptations
- Top-mounted eyes and nostrils: These allow surveillance and breathing while most of the body remains concealed underwater.
- Very heavy build: A thick trunk supplies strength for large prey and stability during aquatic struggles.
- Camouflage: Patterned coloration helps the snake blend with vegetation, mud and shadow around wetlands.
- Water-centered movement: Slow water and flooded ground provide routes for travel, concealment and escape.
Boa constrictor adaptations
- Versatile locomotion: Boas can move across the ground, climb and swim, allowing them to exploit varied landscapes.
- Shelter-seeking behavior: Hollow logs, burrows and other cover protect them while resting and waiting for prey.
- Nocturnal activity: Night hunting suits their rodent, bat and other small-to-medium prey.
- Strong coils without aquatic specialization: Their bodies are built for restraint and climbing, but not for a permanently water-based existence.
How do they reproduce?
Both green anacondas and boa constrictors give birth to live young rather than laying exposed clutches of eggs. The embryos develop inside the mother, and the young are born as fully formed miniature snakes.
Green anaconda breeding
Green anacondas are generally solitary outside the breeding season. During breeding, multiple males may gather around a female in a breeding ball. The female retains the developing young and gives birth in the wetland environment where she lives.
Boa constrictor breeding
Boa constrictor females also give birth to live young. The cited comparison does not establish a single gestation length, litter size or breeding season that applies across the species’ entire range, which spans many climates and local populations.

In a hypothetical physical contest between a large adult female green anaconda and a typical boa constrictor, the anaconda would have the decisive advantages of mass, girth and overall strength. Its cited maximum weight is up to 550 pounds, compared with more than 100 pounds for a boa constrictor, and it is adapted to overpower very large prey.
That answer does not mean encounters are normal or that one species routinely hunts the other. Green anacondas and boa constrictors generally occupy different habitats, and the comparison is a thought experiment rather than an observed contest. A smaller or juvenile anaconda would not automatically dominate every adult boa, and size, age, health, terrain and the opportunity to escape would all affect an actual encounter.

Water would further favor the anaconda because it can use buoyancy, submerged concealment and its aquatic body plan. On dry land, the boa’s climbing and terrestrial mobility could make avoidance easier, but those advantages do not erase the anaconda’s much greater potential mass.

Are green anacondas dangerous to people?
Green anacondas are powerful wild predators, but claims that they routinely eat people are not supported by the cited National Geographic and Smithsonian material. Human attacks are described as rare, and there is no evidence that attacking people is normal behavior.
Risk is highest when a person handles, corners or deliberately approaches a large wild snake, particularly near water where the animal may be difficult to see or retreat from. The sensible response is distance: do not attempt to capture, feed, block or provoke a snake, and follow local wildlife guidance in its habitat.
How long do they live?
| Species | Wild lifespan cited | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Green anaconda | About 10 years | Smithsonian’s National Zoo figure for life in the wild |
| Boa constrictor | 20–30 years | National Geographic reference figure for life in the wild |
The figures are not a controlled, side-by-side longevity experiment. They come from separate reference sources and should be read as species-specific estimates rather than proof that every boa outlives every anaconda.
What is known about their conservation status?
The IUCN record used for green anaconda is a 2014 assessment published in the linked 2021 Red List version. That record states that population size and population trends require more information. It is therefore not sound to present a confident side-by-side ranking that declares one of these snakes universally more threatened than the other based only on the figures here.
Range-wide status can conceal important local differences. Wetland loss, changes to river systems, persecution and collection may affect populations differently from one region to another, while boa constrictors occupy an exceptionally broad range with varied local conditions. Conservation conclusions should be tied to a particular species, locality and current assessment rather than inferred from body size.
