Amplifier Classes Explained: Class A, AB, D, and What They Mean for Sound

Amplifier class describes output-stage operation, not a sound-quality ranking. Learn how Class A, AB, and D differ in switching, heat, and efficiency—and what to compare in real products.

Class A, AB, and D describe how an amplifier’s output stage handles the audio signal—not a ranking of sound quality. Class A keeps its output devices conducting continuously, Class AB uses a smaller standing bias to reduce crossover distortion, and Class D switches its output devices rapidly. Those differences affect efficiency, heat, and design; the sound of a particular amplifier depends on its implementation and measured performance.

What does an amplifier class describe?

An amplifier class identifies how its output stage operates as it drives a speaker. The letter alone does not tell you how clean, quiet, or accurate the finished amplifier will sound. Distortion, noise, frequency response, feedback, power-supply behavior, the speaker load, and the amplifier’s operating level all matter.

The practical distinction among these three classes is how the output devices conduct or switch, and what that means for wasted power and heat.

How Class A, Class AB, and Class D work

Class A: continuous conduction

In a Class A output stage, the output devices conduct throughout the audio waveform rather than switching off for part of it. This can support linear operation, but the stage draws standing current even when it is not delivering much audio power. Much of that power becomes heat instead of reaching the speaker.

That continuous bias makes heat management and power consumption important design considerations, especially in high-output or battery-powered equipment. It describes a circuit approach, not a guarantee that every Class A amplifier will sound better.

Class AB: a biased push-pull compromise

Class AB sits between Class A and Class B. A small bias keeps both sides of the output stage conducting around the signal’s zero crossing, helping reduce the crossover distortion associated with Class B. As the signal grows, the two sides handle opposite portions of the waveform in a push-pull arrangement.

Compared with Class A, Class AB avoids the same level of continuous high bias and is generally more efficient. Compared with Class D, it typically dissipates more output-stage power as heat.

Class D: switching and modulation

Class D rapidly switches its output devices. In a common implementation, pulse-width modulation (PWM) represents the audio signal as pulses; the switching stage amplifies them, and an output low-pass filter removes high-frequency switching components while passing audio to the speaker. Texas Instruments describes modulation as the defining difference from the linear operation of Classes A, AB, and B in its Class-D amplifier selection report.

The “D” does not mean the amplifier is inherently digital. It refers to a switching output-stage approach. Filter requirements vary: some designs use an output filter, while certain filter-free implementations rely on speaker inductance under normal operation and may use other measures to manage electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Because the output devices spend less time in a partly conducting state, Class D can reduce output-stage losses and heat. That can help make compact and battery-powered products practical, but it does not make every Class D amplifier equally efficient or equally well-designed.

How much do the classes differ in efficiency and heat?

Class-level comparisons illustrate the tradeoff, but they are not specifications for a retail product. In an undated technical article, Analog Devices gives output-stage efficiencies at the onset of clipping of 25% for Class A, 78.5% for Class B, and 90% for Class D. These comparison values describe the article’s analysis; they are not guaranteed product efficiencies, and Class AB is not assigned a figure in that comparison.

The same article gives a separate example for an amplifier with a 10 W maximum load, evaluated at 1 W average output. In that model, efficiency is 3% for Class A, 28% for Class B, and 78% for Class D, with output-stage dissipation of 30.2 W, 2.53 W, and 282 mW, respectively. These are illustrative figures for those stated conditions, not measurements of all amplifiers in those classes.

Efficiency changes with circuit design and operating level. Analog Devices also notes that long-term average music levels can be five to 20 times below instantaneous peaks, depending on the type of music. That manufacturer technical context is a reminder that listening output is not constant at peak power; it is not a universal measurement of music or a product-efficiency rating.

Does Class D sound worse than Class AB?

Not inherently. Analog Devices states that “Modern Class D amps also achieve fidelity comparable to Class AB amps” in its overview of amplifier types. That is a statement about what well-designed modern implementations can achieve, not a promise about every product.

Class D designs can face noise, distortion, dead-time, power-supply rejection, and filtering challenges. Feedback and careful implementation can improve performance, but the class label by itself cannot establish how a specific amplifier measures or sounds. The same caution applies in the other direction: Class A’s continuous conduction does not prove that a particular model will sound more accurate or preferable.

For a product-level comparison, look for measurements made under stated conditions. Texas Instruments’ audio amplifier measurement guide covers performance-measurement considerations; a single distortion or signal-to-noise figure without its test conditions may not describe performance across the levels and frequencies relevant to your system.

Which amplifier class should you choose?

Choose by the amplifier’s specifications, operating environment, and compatibility with your speakers—not by assuming one letter sounds best. Use these checks when comparing specific models:

  • Power and speaker load: Compare continuous output power at the impedance your speakers present. Check the stated distortion conditions and distinguish continuous ratings from peak claims.
  • Distortion and noise: Look for THD+N and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with their power, frequency, and measurement conditions. A single adjective such as “clean” is not a substitute for comparable data.
  • Heat, efficiency, and size: Consider the amplifier’s cooling and expected listening level as well as its maximum output. Textbook class comparisons do not tell you a product’s real-world efficiency.
  • System fit: Check speaker impedance compatibility, power supply, number of channels, thermal design, and whether the equipment must run from a battery or fit into a tight space.
  • Class D filtering and interference: For a Class D design, check whether it uses an output filter or another filtering approach, and whether the product’s design addresses EMI that could affect nearby radio systems.

If low heat, compact size, or battery operation is a priority, Class D’s switching approach may suit the application. If you are considering Class A, account for its continuous power draw and heat. Class AB offers a linear push-pull approach with bias intended to reduce crossover distortion without Class A’s continuous high bias. None of these traits replaces model-specific specifications and measurements.
