How to Track Training Load and Spot Signs of Overuse

Track both the work you do and how your body responds to it. A consistent record of training, effort, recovery, and symptoms can help you notice concerning changes and review your plan—but no single score, wearable, or workload formula can predict or diagnose an overuse injury.

What training load means

Training load has two useful sides. External load describes the work completed; internal load describes your response to that work. The same distance, session, or weight can feel very different from one person to another—or from one day to the next.

  • External load: session duration, distance, weight lifted, or games played, chosen to fit your sport. Include non-sport demands when they meaningfully affect your overall load.
  • Internal load: perceived exertion (how hard the session felt) or a relevant physiological measure such as heart rate.
  • Tolerance and readiness: fatigue, recovery, general well-being, stress, motivation, illness symptoms, pain, and changes in function.
  • Context: recent training changes, competitions, travel, sleep and recovery, and significant life stressors.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) consensus on load in sport says, “Load should always be monitored individually.” A measurement is useful only insofar as it helps you understand your own pattern.

Set up a simple training-load log

Use a paper diary, spreadsheet, or app you can update consistently. A logbook is optional; the important part is capturing a few relevant measures, not buying a particular product or collecting every available metric.

  1. Record the date and session type. Note what you did, such as a run, strength session, practice, or game.
  2. Record duration and one sport-relevant measure of work. Depending on your activity, that could be distance, lifted weight, or games played.
  3. Rate perceived effort. Use the same personal scale each time and record how demanding the session felt.
  4. Add a brief tolerance and recovery check. Note fatigue, soreness or pain, general well-being, illness symptoms, and any limitation in normal movement or performance.
  5. Add relevant context. Record unusual stress, poor recovery, travel, or a competition if it helps explain how the session felt.

Heart-rate monitoring can record one physiological response, while GPS or sport-specific devices may capture selected external measures. Each shows only part of the picture. Choose tools based on sport relevance and whether you can use them consistently, and pair them with a symptom and recovery check.

How to interpret your log

Compare your entries with your own usual pattern rather than looking for a universal safe number. Consider what was planned, what you actually completed, how hard it felt, and whether you recovered and functioned normally afterward.

A familiar session that suddenly feels much harder—especially alongside worsening fatigue, pain, poor recovery, or reduced function—is a reason to review the training and recovery picture. One measure in isolation may be misleading; several changes together are more informative as a prompt to reassess, not a forecast of injury.

Use session effort as one input, not a verdict

One commonly used summary of internal load is session perceived exertion multiplied by session duration. It can help compare entries made in the same way, but it compresses a session into one number. Sessions with different combinations of duration and intensity can produce the same product while imposing different demands. Treat the result as a limited summary, not a complete measure of training effect or injury risk.

Signs of overuse to notice

Overuse problems can develop gradually through repeated loading, without one obvious incident. Track pain and soreness as they appear rather than waiting until they force you to miss sport. A diary can help show whether symptoms are increasing, returning during the same activity, or affecting normal function; it cannot identify a specific injury on its own.

  • Pain or soreness that is getting worse over time.
  • Symptoms that recur during the same activity.
  • Changes that limit normal movement or other usual function.
  • A combination of symptoms and worsening recovery or well-being.

Fatigue, muscle or joint aches, headache, and fever can occur with illness and may overlap with signs associated with excessive training. These symptoms are nonspecific. The IOC illness consensus notes that no single marker consistently predicts acute illness or overtraining syndrome, and definitive monitoring or diagnostic criteria for overreaching and overtraining syndrome remain lacking. A dashboard cannot diagnose either condition.

What to do when the pattern changes

If symptoms emerge or several measures worsen, review recent training, your response to it, recovery, and relevant non-sport stressors together. Depending on the pattern, consider modifying or reducing training and allowing adequate recovery. A log supports that review; it does not replace clinical assessment or provide an individualized treatment plan.

Seek assessment from a qualified sports-medicine professional for persistent or worsening pain, meaningful functional limitation, or concerning illness symptoms. Monitoring is most useful as a prompt to respond thoughtfully—not as a reason to push through a deteriorating pattern or to self-diagnose.

Why fixed cutoffs and single scores can mislead

Sports, athletes, and circumstances differ, and the consensus guidance does not establish a universal percentage increase or workload-ratio threshold that defines a safe or unsafe training change for everyone. Likewise, a wearable score or isolated measure is not a validated standalone injury predictor. Interpret changes in the context of individual history, sport demands, other stressors, and recovery.
