That is not the same as an abrupt shutdown. The IPCC assessment, as summarized by NASA and the Met Office, says weakening is “very likely” this century, while there is medium confidence that an abrupt collapse will not occur before 2100. Measurements show substantial variability and evidence of recent weakening, but no household test can tell you that a collapse is imminent.
What the AMOC is and why it matters
The AMOC is the Atlantic branch of the global ocean conveyor system. It moves warm, salty surface water northward, carries heat into the North Atlantic, and returns colder, denser water southward at depth. This circulation transports heat, salt, carbon and nutrients, linking weather and marine ecosystems across ocean basins.

Near the Arctic and sub-Arctic, northward-flowing water loses heat to the atmosphere. Sea-ice formation leaves salt behind in the remaining seawater, increasing its density. When the water becomes dense enough, it sinks and joins a deep southward current. One parcel of water can take about 1,000 years to complete the global conveyor-belt journey, according to NOAA’s explainer, so the AMOC is a slow system with short-term fluctuations superimposed on long-term change.
The AMOC is not identical to the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is a swift western-boundary current; it is one component of a broader overturning circulation that also includes deep-water formation and return flows. A weaker AMOC can coexist with a still-powerful Gulf Stream, and a change in one measured location does not automatically describe the entire system.

Why a warmer, fresher ocean weakens overturning
Heat reduces surface-water density
Greenhouse-gas warming adds heat to the atmosphere and upper ocean. Warmer seawater expands and becomes less dense. If northward-flowing water remains too light, less of it sinks in the high-latitude North Atlantic, reducing the engine that drives the deep return flow.
Freshwater makes sinking harder
Greenland ice loss, increased precipitation and changes in river runoff add freshwater to the North Atlantic. Freshwater lowers salinity and therefore density. A warm, fresh surface layer can resist mixing with the saltier water below, further suppressing deep-water formation. NASA and the UK Met Office describe this heat-and-freshwater mechanism as the central climate-related pressure on the AMOC.
Winds and the Southern Ocean also matter
The AMOC is not controlled by North Atlantic salinity alone. Winds push surface waters, alter upwelling and redistribute heat around the Southern Ocean. A Met Office-led modelling study released in 2025 found that a weakened state was driven largely by Southern Ocean wind changes rather than by North Atlantic freshwater forcing alone. This result does not remove the importance of Greenland melt or precipitation; it shows that several parts of the climate system can strengthen or counteract one another.
Is the AMOC already slowing down?
The most defensible answer is that the evidence points to weakening over some recent periods, but the size and timing of the trend depend on the record and the definition of “AMOC strength.” Continuous direct observations began only in 2004, far too recently to capture the full range of natural variability in a circulation with multidecadal swings.
What direct measurements show
The RAPID-MOCHA-Western Boundary Time Series (RAPID-MOCHA-WBTS) array near 26°N estimates the net north–south transport across the Atlantic using moorings and related observations. Its record varies markedly from year to year. A short interval can therefore look like a sharp decline or recovery without representing a permanent change in the entire overturning system.

Why different summaries appear to disagree
NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) summary from January 2025 reported extensive weakening during the 2000s, followed by a pause since the early 2010s as natural variability and human-caused signals competed. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), reviewing more than 60 years of records in 2024, described relative stability from 1955 to 1994, a decline over the last two decades, and signs of resilience associated with the Gulf Stream. These statements can all be consistent because they use different time windows, locations, variables and reconstruction methods.
Longer reconstructions based on ocean sediments, corals, ice cores, ship observations and climate models extend farther back than the instrument record, but they carry larger uncertainties. They are useful for identifying unusual behaviour and historical context, not for producing one universally accepted “percentage slowdown.” No single reconstructed trend should be treated as a settled measurement of the whole AMOC.

Are there warning signs before an AMOC collapse?
There is no validated household warning light. Scientists look for a combination of oceanographic, atmospheric and statistical signals, and they assess whether several independent indicators are changing coherently.
Direct transport measurements
Arrays such as RAPID-MOCHA-WBTS provide estimates of the amount of water moving north and south at a given latitude. A persistent, spatially broad decline would be more significant than a single anomalous month, but even a long run of weak transport must be interpreted against natural variability and measurement uncertainty.
Temperature and salinity profiles
Research vessels, autonomous floats and moorings measure how heat and salt are distributed through the water column. Surface freshening, reduced density and changes in deep-water properties can indicate that sinking conditions are becoming less favourable. These are regional clues, not a stand-alone collapse forecast.

Satellite gravity, sea level and ocean height
Satellites detect changes in sea-surface height, gravity-related mass distribution and ocean temperature. A slowing circulation can leave characteristic sea-level and sea-surface-temperature fingerprints, including altered water levels along parts of the North American coast. Researchers combine these patterns with in-ocean data because each satellite product has its own limits.

Wind stress affects monthly and interannual AMOC variability. Greenland melt, rainfall and river discharge alter salinity. The Met Office’s monitoring framework separates wind effects, internal ocean variability on decadal scales and greenhouse-gas forcing on longer timescales, helping scientists avoid attributing every fluctuation to one cause.
Models and decadal prediction systems
Climate models test whether observed changes are consistent with greenhouse forcing, natural variability or both. Decadal prediction systems look for signs that the ocean has entered a persistently different state. These are probability tools, not countdown clocks: a model signal can raise concern without specifying a date when a collapse will occur.
How soon could the AMOC collapse?
Authoritative assessments do not support a precise collapse year. The IPCC’s AR6 conclusion, quoted by NASA and the Met Office, is that the AMOC is “very likely to weaken over the 21st century.” The same assessment gives medium confidence that there will not be an abrupt collapse before 2100. NASA’s summary says a stop or collapse before 2100 is unlikely. A February 2025 Met Office release describing Nature modelling likewise judged collapse over the next 75 years unlikely, while warning that weakening is still very likely and consequential.
“Unlikely” is not the same as impossible, and “medium confidence” is not a guarantee. The evidence supports a risk range rather than a countdown. A collapse would require the circulation to cross a threshold in which feedbacks—such as freshwater accumulation and reduced northward salt transport—reinforce the initial weakening. Whether and when that threshold could be crossed remains uncertain.

Gradual weakening versus abrupt collapse
| Feature | Gradual weakening | Abrupt collapse |
|---|---|---|
| Current assessment | Very likely during the 21st century (IPCC AR6) | Medium confidence it will not occur before 2100; considered unlikely in current projections |
| Timescale | Years to decades, with pauses and reversals possible | Rapid change relative to the background trend, potentially unfolding over years to decades |
| Main physics | Warming, freshwater input, winds and internal variability reduce overturning strength | Positive feedbacks push the system past a critical threshold |
| Evidence base | Direct observations since 2004, longer reconstructions and model projections | Model experiments, palaeoclimate evidence and threshold analysis; no observed modern collapse |
| Geographic footprint | Regional changes in heat transport, sea level, rainfall, storms and ecosystems | Larger and faster shifts in European climate, tropical rain belts, monsoons, sea level and marine systems |
| Warning lead time | Trend detection is possible, but year-to-year noise is large | No validated public alert system; a convincing early-warning signal would require multiple indicators |
| Reversibility | Some variability and pauses are expected; long-term recovery would be slow | Recovery could be difficult and prolonged because the deep ocean responds slowly |
What a weaker AMOC could mean for Europe and the North Atlantic
Europe would not simply become colder
Less northward heat transport can partly offset greenhouse warming in western Europe. That does not cancel global warming: average temperatures continue to rise under ongoing greenhouse forcing. The regional result could be a different mix of warming, winter temperature patterns, rainfall and storm tracks rather than a return to a preindustrial climate.
Storms and seasonal weather could change
Changes in ocean heat distribution affect the atmosphere above the North Atlantic. The exact response depends on the rate of weakening, background greenhouse warming and atmospheric circulation. Scientists therefore describe changes in winter storms and weather patterns as likely regional consequences, not as a single guaranteed storm trend for every country.
Marine ecosystems would feel altered transport
The AMOC moves nutrients, oxygen and carbon as well as heat and salt. A change in transport can shift the conditions supporting plankton, fish and other marine organisms. Ecological effects vary by species and location, and they interact with warming, acidification, fishing pressure and deoxygenation.

Higher sea level along the East Coast
NOAA says continued AMOC slowing would contribute to sea-level rise along the U.S. East Coast. This is a regional dynamic effect added to global mean sea-level rise from ocean warming and land-ice loss. It can increase the frequency or reach of coastal flooding even when a storm’s size is unchanged.

Rainfall and extreme-weather risks
AMOC-related changes can influence precipitation and extreme weather, but the sign and magnitude differ by region and season. Local projections must account for other drivers, including atmospheric circulation, tropical variability and ongoing warming. A weaker AMOC is not a reliable explanation for any single flood, drought or hurricane.

What an abrupt collapse would change globally
Collapse scenarios produce much larger and faster shifts than gradual weakening. In the IPCC impacts summarized by NASA, a collapse would very likely move the tropical rain belt south, weaken African and Asian monsoons, strengthen Southern Hemisphere monsoons and make Europe drier. North Atlantic and European temperatures could change sharply relative to the continuing global warming trend, while sea-level and ecosystem impacts would spread beyond the Atlantic.
These statements describe a high-impact scenario, not the most likely near-term outcome. The distinction matters for planning: societies must reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and prepare for expected gradual changes while also treating low-probability, high-consequence threshold behaviour as a risk worth monitoring.
How to interpret headlines about the AMOC
- Check whether “Gulf Stream” is being used as a synonym for the entire AMOC; it is not.
- Look for the measurement period. A 20-year trend, a 60-year reconstruction and a 1,000-year circulation timescale answer different questions.
- Ask whether the claim concerns observed transport, an inferred historical trend or a model projection.
- Separate weakening from shutdown. The first is the expected direction; the second is a low-probability threshold event in current assessments.
- Read the confidence language. “Very likely,” “unlikely” and “medium confidence” are formal assessments, not interchangeable adjectives.
- Be wary of a precise collapse date. Current authoritative sources support probabilities and time horizons, not a calendar countdown.
Frequently asked questions
Can a consumer weather station detect AMOC weakening?
No. A home weather station measures local atmospheric conditions. AMOC assessment requires ocean transport arrays, water-column temperature and salinity data, satellite observations and models. A household thermometer or Gulf Stream-themed product cannot measure AMOC strength.

No. A weaker AMOC can reduce northward heat transport and alter regional climate, but greenhouse warming continues. “Ice age” is not an appropriate description of the projected 21st-century weakening scenario.
Could the AMOC recover after a pause?
Short pauses or rebounds are compatible with substantial natural variability. They do not prove that long-term climate forcing has ended, just as a temporary decline does not prove an imminent collapse.
Is Greenland melt the only cause?
No. Greenland freshwater and increased precipitation matter, but warming, winds, Southern Ocean processes and internal variability also influence overturning. The 2025 Met Office-led modelling study highlighted the large role of Southern Ocean winds in a weakened state.
What should policymakers monitor?
They should track transport arrays, deep-ocean temperature and salinity, satellite sea level and gravity, wind and freshwater forcing, and model-based early-warning diagnostics together. Decisions should use risk ranges rather than wait for one definitive alarm.
