Amit Forlit is an Israeli private investigator whom U.S. prosecutors accuse of directing a hack-for-hire operation. The charges reported against him are conspiracy to commit computer hacking, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. The alleged targets included people and organizations connected to climate activism and climate litigation. Forlit was arrested at London Heathrow in April 2024 under an Interpol red notice. On April 30, 2025, a Westminster judge recommended extradition to the United States, but the public record does not establish whether an appeal, transfer or U.S. trial followed. Forlit has not been convicted.
Who is Amit Forlit?
Forlit is described in U.S. and British proceedings as an Israeli private investigator who arranged intelligence-gathering work for clients. Prosecutors allege that his role went beyond lawful investigation: he allegedly helped organize a campaign in which computer accounts were targeted, information was obtained and the resulting material was circulated for strategic use.

The U.S. case is an accusation, not a finding of guilt. The reported indictment charges conspiracy to commit computer hacking, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. Some names and identifying details in the indictment and extradition affidavit were anonymized, so the public record does not establish a complete list of targets or every participant.
What prosecutors allege about the climate-activist operation
1. A lobbying firm allegedly selected targets
The extradition affidavit describes a sequence in which a Washington lobbying and public-relations firm identified people connected to climate activism or climate-related litigation. Reporting in 2025 identified that firm as DCI Group. The identification was reported in accounts of the extradition materials; it is not a charge against DCI Group.

2. Target lists allegedly reached Forlit or an associate
According to the affidavit as described in court reporting, lists of intended targets were passed to Forlit or a co-conspirator. The documents do not provide a reliable total number of climate activists targeted, and some names remain concealed.
3. Hacking was allegedly subcontracted through Aviram Azari
Prosecutors allege that Forlit used Aviram Azari, an Israeli cyber operator, to carry out unauthorized access. Azari was separately prosecuted in the United States. The alleged arrangement was a division of labor: a client-side intermediary supplied objectives, Forlit coordinated the work, and Azari or other technical operators obtained the data.

4. Stolen material was allegedly used in public and legal channels
The alleged purpose was not simply private surveillance. Prosecutors say material taken from accounts was circulated to journalists and used in litigation or advocacy channels, where it could influence public narratives or legal strategy. The extradition filings do not prove that every item attributed to the operation was obtained by hacking or that every intended use occurred.

Reporting by Reuters and other outlets connected the alleged climate-activist operation to DCI Group and identified ExxonMobil as the oil-company client that stood behind the work. That connection is an allegation or reported attribution drawn from extradition documents and related reporting, not a criminal finding.

DCI Group and ExxonMobil have been described as denying wrongdoing. Neither company was charged in Forlit’s criminal case according to Reuters and other outlets’ reporting. The extradition documents and related reporting therefore support a careful distinction: prosecutors allege that a lobbying operation commissioned intelligence work, while reporting identifies the companies associated with that operation; it does not establish that ExxonMobil executives ordered hacking or that either company committed a crime.
Extradition timeline
| Date | What happened | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | A filing in the separate Azima civil litigation described allegations that respondents and Forlit used hacking to obtain confidential information. | This was a civil dispute, not a conviction in the U.S. criminal case. |
| April 2024 | British authorities arrested Forlit at Heathrow under an Interpol red notice while he was attempting to travel to Israel. | The arrest began the U.K. extradition process. |
| 2024–early 2025 | An initial extradition attempt failed over a procedural timing issue. Later filings and reporting linked the alleged climate operation to DCI Group and ExxonMobil. | The procedural failure did not resolve the underlying U.S. accusations. |
| April 30, 2025 | A Westminster judge recommended that Forlit be extradited to the United States and rejected his argument that the prosecution was politically motivated. | A recommendation is not the same as a completed transfer or a U.S. conviction. |
The later status of any appeal, ministerial decision or transfer is not established by the available records. Because extradition proceedings can change after a reported recommendation, readers should treat April 30, 2025, as the latest confirmed procedural milestone in this account.

The separate Farhad Azima civil case
Forlit’s name also appears in litigation brought by aviation executive Farhad Azima. In that civil case, allegations filed in 2023 said Forlit and other respondents helped obtain private emails for use in related litigation. Forlit acknowledged retrieving emails but denied hacking them.
This distinction matters. The Azima matter concerns a civil dispute and a different set of allegations from the U.S. criminal prosecution involving climate-activism targets. A claim in a civil filing, an admission that emails were retrieved and a criminal charge are not interchangeable proof of the same conduct.

| Issue | What the record supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Forlit’s alleged role | U.S. prosecutors accuse him of coordinating a hack-for-hire campaign and charge conspiracy and wire-fraud offenses. | A conviction or a final finding that he directed every intrusion described by investigators. |
| Climate-related targets | Extradition materials describe targets tied to climate activism and climate litigation. | A reliable total number of targets or a fully public list of names. |
| DCI Group | Reporting identified DCI Group as the alleged commissioning lobbying firm. | That DCI Group was charged or found criminally liable in Forlit’s case. |
| ExxonMobil | Reporting identified ExxonMobil as the oil-company client associated with the alleged work; the company was described as denying wrongdoing. | That ExxonMobil was charged, or that a court found it ordered hacking. |
| Aviram Azari | Prosecutors allege Azari supplied or carried out technical hacking for the operation; he was separately prosecuted. | That every data set discussed publicly came from Azari or from this particular operation. |
| Extradition | A U.K. judge recommended extradition on April 30, 2025 and rejected the political-prosecution objection at that stage. | Whether an appeal succeeded, whether Forlit was transferred, or how the U.S. case ultimately ended. |
Why the case matters
The allegations describe a supply chain in which political or corporate interests could obtain sensitive communications without openly appearing to conduct surveillance themselves. If proven, that model would blur the line between competitive intelligence, private investigation and criminal intrusion. It also explains why the case has drawn attention from climate campaigners: information taken from activists or litigants could be repurposed to pressure them in public debate or court.
At Aviram Azari’s sentencing hearing, Lee Wasserman of the Rockefeller Family Fund described the experience by saying, “It felt like Big Brother had arrived,” and that “citizens opposing powerful interests have their communications surveilled.” The statement captures the perceived impact on campaigners, but it is not evidence that resolves the charges against Forlit or the role of any company.
Quick Recap
What remains unresolved
- Whether British authorities ultimately transferred Forlit to the United States after the April 30, 2025 recommendation.
- Whether any appeal changed the extradition outcome.
- The identities and total number of climate-related targets, because public filings were partly anonymized.
- What evidence a U.S. jury would hear and whether prosecutors could prove the charged conspiracies beyond a reasonable doubt.
- How the climate-related allegations relate, if at all, to the separate Azima civil litigation beyond the overlapping allegation that confidential emails were obtained.
