Short answer: Chase Ultimate Rewards has a slight edge in published October 2026 average valuations, but neither currency is always worth more. Chase is the stronger default for World of Hyatt, United, Southwest and a dependable 1-cent fallback. American Express Membership Rewards can produce more useful awards when your itinerary fits partners such as Aeroplan, Flying Blue, ANA, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer or Virgin Atlantic. The best choice is the program that can book your specific trip at the lowest total points, taxes and fees.
What Amex Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards actually are
Membership Rewards and Ultimate Rewards are issuer points currencies. You can redeem them directly through the issuer, or move them to participating airline and hotel loyalty accounts. The transfer option is where the largest potential value usually appears, but it also creates the greatest risk: partner award prices, availability, taxes, fees and transfer ratios determine what your balance can really buy.

American Express Membership Rewards
American Express says eligible card members can transfer Membership Rewards points to frequent-flyer or hotel guest programs to top up an account or obtain a reward flight or hotel room. It also lists gift cards, travel booked through American Express, statement credits, shopping and charitable donations as redemption choices. The value changes by method, so a point used for a statement credit is not automatically worth the same as a point transferred to an airline.
Transfers are final and governed by the receiving program’s terms. The transfer page captured for this comparison shows 20 partners: 16 airlines and four hotel programs. Ratios are partner-specific rather than universally 1:1. For example, 1,000 Membership Rewards points can become 1,000 Aeroplan points, while 1,000 points can become 2,000 Hilton Honors points.

Chase Ultimate Rewards
Chase states that points are typically worth 1 cent each when redeemed for cash back or gift cards, with potentially higher value through Chase Travel℠ or partner transfers. Eligible cards can also receive Points Boost pricing on selected travel bookings, increasing the value by up to 50 percent when an offer applies. The exact value depends on the card, booking and dates.
Chase transfers are generally made in 1,000-point increments and are final. The transfer page lists airline and hotel partners, but the availability of a particular award is controlled by the partner rather than by Chase.
Published point valuations for October 2026
Valuation figures are planning estimates, not guaranteed exchange rates. They assume a reader finds a redemption that matches the methodology used by the publisher. Your realized value can be lower or higher depending on the card you hold, transfer ratio, award inventory, fees and the cash price of the same trip.

These estimates do not establish a permanent winner. The October 2026 The Points Guy figures put Chase only 0.05 cent ahead of Amex, while NerdWallet’s card-specific figures show a much wider spread for certain Chase cards. A point is valuable only when you can use it for an award you actually want.

Transfer partners: breadth versus specific access
Membership Rewards partners
The captured American Express list contains the following airline programs: AerClub, Aeromexico Rewards, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, ANA Mileage Club, Avianca LifeMiles, Cathay Pacific, Delta SkyMiles, Emirates Skywards, Iberia, JetBlue, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer and British Airways, along with Virgin Atlantic. Hotel partners are Choice Privileges, Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy and another hotel program shown on the issuer list. Because ratios differ by partner, check the transfer screen immediately before committing points.
This roster is especially useful when your destination is served by a Star Alliance, oneworld or SkyTeam carrier that Chase does not offer directly. Aeroplan, ANA, Flying Blue, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer and Virgin Atlantic are often the reason an international traveler keeps Membership Rewards, even when a Chase valuation table looks slightly better.
Ultimate Rewards partners
Chase lists these airline partners: Aer Lingus, British Airways, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Iberia, JetBlue, Singapore Airlines, Southwest, United, Virgin Atlantic and Air Canada. Hotel partners are IHG, Marriott, World of Hyatt and Wyndham.

Why Chase can be the better default
A clear floor when travel plans change
Chase says cash back and gift cards typically return 1 cent per point. That gives a simple benchmark: if a proposed transfer produces less than 1 cent per point after taxes and fees, the cash or gift-card alternative may be preferable. This floor is not a promise that every Chase card or redemption works identically, but it is easier to evaluate than a speculative airline transfer.
World of Hyatt and domestic coverage
World of Hyatt, United and Southwest are prominent reasons to favor Chase. If those programs cover your regular hotel or flight needs, a smaller partner roster can still be more useful than a larger list you rarely use. Chase also includes IHG, Marriott and Wyndham for travelers who need a broader hotel mix.
Points Boost on eligible bookings
Points Boost can raise the value of selected Chase Travel℠ bookings by up to 50 percent, depending on the card and the specific offer. It is not a blanket multiplier for every reservation. Before assuming a boosted value, open the booking details, confirm that the Points Boost label applies, and compare the points required with the cash rate and with a direct partner award.

Why Amex can be more valuable for the right itinerary
A larger international-airline menu
Membership Rewards reaches programs such as ANA Mileage Club, Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer, Avianca LifeMiles and Emirates Skywards. If one of those programs has the award seat you need, transferring Amex points can beat a Chase portal booking or a less suitable Chase partner even when published averages favor Chase.
Shared partners do not erase practical differences
Both currencies can reach several programs, including Air Canada Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and Iberia. However, the transfer ratio, transfer timing, card benefits and the award inventory you can see may differ. A shared partner is not proof that the two currencies have equal value for your trip.
Ratios must be checked at the moment of transfer
American Express reported that, effective March 1, 2026, Cathay Pacific transfers changed from 1 Membership Rewards point to 1 Asia Mile to 5 Membership Rewards points to 4 Asia Miles. That devaluation demonstrates why an old spreadsheet or blog table can mislead you. Open the current transfer page, select the partner and verify the ratio before pressing confirm.

How to compare the two currencies for one trip
- Define the exact award. Record origin, destination, dates, cabin, passengers and whether the itinerary can move by a day or two. A flexible date range often reveals availability that a fixed search misses.
- Record the cash alternative. Use the comparable cash fare for the same cabin, dates and baggage conditions. Do not compare a business-class award with an economy cash ticket.
- Search both ecosystems. Check Chase Travel℠, relevant Chase transfer partners, American Express travel options and relevant Amex partners. Search the partner program itself when possible so you can see the actual award inventory before transferring.
- Include every mandatory charge. Note taxes, carrier surcharges, booking fees and any cash payment required at checkout. A lower points quote can be worse if its cash component is substantially higher.
- Calculate realized value. Use:
(comparable cash price − taxes and fees paid on the award) ÷ points used × 100 = cents per point. Apply the calculation separately to the Amex and Chase options. - Apply card-specific benefits. Check whether a Chase Points Boost offer applies, whether your Chase card has the valuation path cited by NerdWallet, and whether an Amex or partner rule changes the transfer ratio.
- Confirm the award before transferring. Keep the award search open, verify the passenger details and confirm that the partner has held or can immediately ticket the space. Never transfer speculatively because completed transfers are final.
- Transfer only the required amount. Move the exact points needed, allowing for the partner’s increment rule. Keep a small buffer only when the program’s pricing or taxes can change between search and checkout.

Which program fits common traveler profiles?
Hyatt-focused hotel traveler
Start with Chase. World of Hyatt is a Chase transfer partner, and NerdWallet’s 1.8-cent estimate for Sapphire Reserve cardholders is based on Hyatt redemptions. Compare the actual Hyatt cash rate and award price for each stay rather than assuming every property reaches that estimate.

United or Southwest flyer
Chase is usually the more direct fit because both United and Southwest appear on its partner list. Check the airline’s award price, taxes and the cash fare; a direct transfer is not automatically better than a Chase Travel℠ booking.
International premium-cabin traveler
Amex deserves the first search when your route can use ANA, Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer, Avianca LifeMiles or Virgin Atlantic. Chase may still win through a shared partner or a cheaper portal fare, so compare both before deciding.
Traveler with uncertain plans
Keep points in the issuer account until travel is confirmed. Chase’s typical 1-cent cash or gift-card value gives a straightforward fallback, while Amex values vary by redemption method. Avoid moving either currency to a partner simply to build a speculative balance.
Someone holding both balances
Treat the balances as separate currencies and run the same itinerary through both. Select the option with the best combination of points, taxes, fees, cancellation terms and convenience—not the one with the higher headline valuation.
Transfer rules and failure points to check
- Finality: Both issuers warn that completed partner transfers are final. A transfer cannot normally be reversed because the award later disappears or your dates change.
- Ratio changes: The March 1, 2026 Cathay change shows that a previously valid ratio can be replaced. Recheck the live transfer page immediately before confirmation.
- Partner inventory: Having access to a program does not guarantee seats or rooms. Award space can differ by date, cabin and traveler count.
- Transfer increments: Chase generally uses 1,000-point increments. Amex increments and ratios depend on the selected partner.
- Card-specific pricing: Chase valuation estimates differ between Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred or Ink Preferred. Do not copy a value calculated for another card.
- Fees and surcharges: Compare the complete out-of-pocket amount. An apparently cheap award can lose its advantage when taxes or carrier surcharges are added.
- Portal versus direct booking: A Points Boost offer may beat a transfer for one booking but not another. Compare the boosted points requirement with the partner’s award price and the cash fare.
A practical verdict for 2026
Use Chase Ultimate Rewards as the default if you value World of Hyatt, United or Southwest, want a simple 1-cent fallback, or can consistently use a Chase Travel℠ Points Boost. Its published October 2026 estimates are slightly higher overall, and the Sapphire Reserve estimate is particularly strong for Hyatt-oriented redemptions.
Use American Express Membership Rewards when its broader international-airline access matches your routes or when a specific Amex partner has the award you need. The published 2.00-cent estimate from The Points Guy is close to Chase’s 2.05 cents, and the difference is smaller than the swing created by one excellent or poor redemption.
If you have both currencies, do not choose by average valuation alone. Search the exact itinerary in both ecosystems, subtract all taxes and fees, account for your card’s portal benefits and transfer ratio, and move points only after the award is confirmed. That process—not a universal ranking—determines which points are worth more for you.
