There is no universal winner. The American Express Gold Card is generally the better fit for people who spend heavily on dining and U.S. supermarkets and can use its partner credits without changing their habits. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is generally better for frequent travelers who will use airport lounges, the annual travel credit, premium hotel benefits and travel protections often enough to justify a much higher annual fee.
The right comparison is not the headline points rate. It is the value you can use in a normal year: fee minus credits you would have claimed anyway, plus the practical value of rewards, lounge visits, insurance and transfer options. The tables below put the 2026 benefits side by side, then show how to make that calculation for your own spending.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Decision in one minute
- Pick American Express Gold if restaurants and U.S. supermarket purchases dominate your budget, Membership Rewards transfer partners matter to you, and the dining, Uber and Resy credits fit purchases you already make.
- Pick Chase Sapphire Reserve if you travel frequently, can use the $300 travel credit and hotel credits, value Sapphire and Priority Pass lounge access, and want substantial travel protection.
- Pick neither if you would have to manufacture spending to use the credits or you do not value premium travel benefits. A lower-fee card may be a better financial decision, although that is outside this head-to-head comparison.
Think of Gold as a high-earning everyday card with a moderate fee and Reserve as a premium travel package with a much larger fee. Your routine, not the card with the most impressive single multiplier, determines the winner.

The American Express Gold Card lists a $325 annual fee, while the Chase Sapphire Reserve annual fee is $795 in the 2026 comparison from CNBC Select. That $470 difference is the first hurdle Reserve must clear before its travel benefits create extra value for you.

| Card | Annual fee | Credits and allowances highlighted for 2026 | What to verify before counting the value |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Express Gold Card | $325 | $120 Dining Credit; $120 Uber Cash; $100 Resy Credit | Enrollment and eligibility terms apply. Confirm which merchants and purchases qualify and whether credits require action during the year. |
| Chase Sapphire Reserve | $795 | $300 annual travel credit; up to $500 annually for The Edit hotel stays in two $250 periods; up to $250 in select Chase Travel hotel credits through December 31, 2026; up to $120 every four years for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS | The Edit and select-hotel credits have booking, timing and qualifying-purchase rules. The $250 select-hotel benefit is specifically available through December 31, 2026, not an unrestricted permanent credit. |
How to value the Gold credits
Start with purchases you would make even without the card. If you already order from eligible dining partners, use Uber in a way that qualifies, and visit eligible Resy restaurants, those credits can reduce the effective cost of Gold. If you would need to choose a more expensive restaurant, take unnecessary rides or make extra orders merely to trigger a credit, count only the amount you genuinely would have spent.
Enrollment and merchant coding matter. A credit that exists on the benefit page is not automatically cash back on every restaurant, ride or reservation. Before applying, read the current American Express terms for eligible merchants, enrollment steps, posting dates and exclusions. Keep a simple monthly checklist so a missed enrollment or unused period does not turn a theoretical benefit into a loss.
How to value the Reserve credits
Reserve’s travel credit is usually the easiest benefit to use for someone who routinely buys airfare, hotels, rental cars or other qualifying travel. Subtract only the portion that replaces travel spending already in your budget. The Edit allowance and the select-hotel credit can add considerable value for travelers who would choose those properties and booking channel anyway, but they are not equivalent to unrestricted cash.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Edit allowance is divided into two $250 periods, so timing matters. The select-hotel credit has a stated end date of December 31, 2026; do not project it into later years without checking a current Chase announcement. The four-year application-fee reimbursement for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS is valuable when you would otherwise pay that fee, but it is not an annual offset.
A fair break-even calculation
- Write down the annual fee for the card.
- Estimate each credit’s real value: the amount of a qualifying purchase you would have made anyway, not the face value you could obtain by spending more.
- Add a conservative value for rewards based on how you redeem them. Do not assume a point value that you cannot reliably obtain.
- Add a separate amount for benefits you would otherwise buy, such as lounge visits, a trusted-traveler application or travel insurance.
- Subtract the fee from that total. Run the calculation again using a pessimistic case in which you miss one or more credits.
Do not add overlapping benefits twice. For example, a hotel purchase cannot simultaneously be treated as entirely reimbursed by a credit and as spending you would have made without the card. Reserve’s large nominal credit total looks attractive only when the booking restrictions match your actual itineraries.

Rewards earning: where each card wins
| Spending category | American Express Gold Card | Chase Sapphire Reserve | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restaurants | 4X Membership Rewards points at worldwide restaurants on the first $50,000 in purchases each calendar year | 3X points on worldwide restaurant dining, including eligible delivery | Gold has the higher published rate and a stated annual cap; Reserve’s rate is simpler for a traveler who values all-in-one travel rewards. |
| Supermarkets | 4X at U.S. supermarkets on the first $25,000 each calendar year | 1X elsewhere unless a purchase qualifies for another Chase category | Gold is the clear fit for substantial qualifying U.S. grocery spend. Merchant coding and the U.S. restriction matter. |
| Flights booked directly | 3X on eligible airfare booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel | 4X on flights booked directly | Reserve has the higher direct-airfare rate; check each issuer’s definition of eligible airfare. |
| Hotels booked through a portal | 5X on prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel | 8X on Chase Travel purchases | Portal bookings can earn more, but compare price, cancellation terms and loyalty-credit treatment before choosing a channel. |
| Hotels booked directly | Base rate unless another term applies | 4X on hotels booked directly | Reserve is designed for travelers who prefer to book with the property or airline rather than a portal. |
| Other purchases | Base rate; the available data does not state a separate bonus category | 1X elsewhere | Use your own statements to identify uncategorized spending before assigning a value to either card. |
Both issuers calculate bonuses from eligible purchases, and merchant coding, exclusions and other terms can change the result. A supermarket purchase from a warehouse club, convenience store or third-party delivery service may not code like a conventional U.S. supermarket. Confirm the category in the current terms rather than relying on the store’s name.
American Express Gold: strongest for dining, groceries and flexible everyday use
Why the earning profile is compelling
Gold concentrates its biggest bonuses in two recurring household categories: worldwide restaurants and U.S. supermarkets. The restaurant bonus applies to the first $50,000 in annual purchases, and the supermarket bonus applies to the first $25,000 in annual purchases. Those caps are generous for many households, but a very high-spend cardholder should model the post-cap rate instead of assuming the multiplier continues indefinitely.

Airfare booked directly with an airline or through Amex Travel earns a separate bonus, and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel receive the highest hotel rate listed for Gold. The trade-off is channel choice: a portal booking may have different cancellation rules, loyalty-program treatment or prices than booking with the hotel. Compare the complete itinerary cost, not only the points.
Credits that reward natural behavior
The Dining Credit, Uber Cash and Resy Credit can make Gold’s effective fee attractive when they mirror your routine. A city resident who already eats at eligible restaurants, uses Uber and books Resy venues may capture much of the available value with no new spending pattern. Someone who rarely uses those services may capture little, even if the nominal credit total looks large.
Set calendar reminders for enrollment and for the periods in which you normally make qualifying purchases. Save receipts when a purchase is close to a category boundary, and check the account’s credit activity rather than assuming a statement credit posted. The terms govern eligibility, not the merchant’s marketing description.

Where Gold is less suitable
Gold is not the natural choice if airport-lounge access is a central requirement; the Gold benefits listed here do not include complimentary lounge access. It also may be less rewarding for a traveler whose largest purchases are direct hotels, because the published direct-hotel bonus is not the card’s highlighted category. Finally, if you dislike portal bookings and do little dining or supermarket spending, the card’s strongest multipliers may sit unused.

Chase Sapphire Reserve: a premium travel package
Travel earning and portal strategy
Reserve earns its highest published rate on Chase Travel purchases, with a separate strong rate for flights and hotels booked directly. It also earns a restaurant bonus worldwide, including eligible delivery. This combination suits a traveler who alternates between the Chase booking channel and direct reservations.
Portal points should not be evaluated in isolation. Check whether the Chase Travel price, cancellation policy, room type, airline terms and hotel loyalty treatment fit your trip. The higher portal multiplier can be poor value if the booking costs more, is less flexible or prevents a benefit you would otherwise receive from booking directly.
Lounge access
Chase documents complimentary access to Chase Sapphire Lounges for the cardholder with up to two guests, plus access to more than 1,300 Priority Pass lounges worldwide. For a traveler who would otherwise pay for lounge visits or regularly faces long airport connections, this can be a meaningful part of Reserve’s value.
Lounge value depends on airports and schedules. Look at the terminals you actually use, guest frequency and opening hours. A lounge network is less useful if your home airport has no convenient location or if your trips rarely leave enough time to enter. Confirm the current Priority Pass enrollment and guest terms before treating access as guaranteed on every journey.

Travel credits and hotel benefits
The annual travel credit can offset qualifying travel purchases made in an ordinary year. The Edit benefit offers up to $500 annually in two $250 periods, while a separate select-hotel credit is available through December 31, 2026 for qualifying prepaid Chase Travel bookings. These benefits can substantially lower the effective fee for a traveler who already chooses participating hotels and can plan around the two periods.
Do not let a credit dictate an expensive trip. If a participating hotel costs more than a comparable property, the useful value is the avoided cost of the room you would have selected, not the full displayed credit. Keep the end date for the select-hotel benefit in your annual review and recheck Chase’s terms when the calendar year changes.
Travel protections: when insurance changes the calculation
Chase lists a broad set of protections for covered trips. Exact definitions, covered reasons, required payment method, documentation and activation rules apply; the figures below are maximums, not automatic payouts.
| Protection listed by Chase | Maximum shown | What it can mean in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Trip cancellation or interruption | Up to $10,000 per covered traveler and $20,000 per trip | Can reduce the need to buy separate coverage for qualifying losses, subject to the policy’s covered events and exclusions. |
| Emergency evacuation and transportation | Up to $100,000 | Potentially important on international or remote trips where evacuation costs can be substantial. |
| Trip-delay reimbursement | Up to $500 per covered traveler | May help with meals, lodging or other qualifying expenses after a covered delay. |
| Rental-car coverage | Primary coverage is listed; amount and conditions are governed by the benefit terms | Read the rental agreement and benefit guide before declining a counter policy or assuming every vehicle is covered. |
| Baggage-delay insurance | Listed by Chase; the supplied benefit summary does not state a limit | Keep receipts and follow the claim timetable if a covered delay occurs. |
These protections are most valuable when you take expensive, international or complicated trips. They are less valuable if you rarely travel, always buy separate insurance, or cannot meet the payment and documentation requirements. Read the current Chase guide to benefits before relying on a protection for a nonrefundable booking.

Make a redemption plan before valuing a point multiplier. If you normally redeem for a low-value option, a higher earning rate may not compensate for the annual fee. Conversely, a traveler who can consistently transfer points for high-value premium flights may place more weight on the rewards currency than on a small difference in everyday earning.
Which card fits common spending patterns?
The dining-and-grocery household
Choose Gold when restaurant and qualifying U.S. supermarket purchases are large, you can use its three partner credits naturally, and lounge access is not a priority. Track the annual spending caps so your estimate reflects the lower rate after a cap is reached.
The frequent airport traveler
Choose Reserve when you fly often enough to use lounges, can consume the travel and hotel credits on trips you already intend to take, and value cancellation, delay, evacuation and rental-car protections. The fee is difficult to justify if those trips are occasional or if your airports lack practical lounge options.
The traveler who books direct
Reserve is the more natural fit when direct flights and hotels make up most of your travel spending and you want the listed direct-booking multipliers. Gold can still be attractive if restaurants and supermarkets dominate the rest of your budget, but do not assume its portal hotel rate applies to a direct reservation.
The occasional traveler with modest dining spend
Neither premium card may be economical. If credits would expire unused and you would not pay for lounge access or travel insurance, a lower-fee alternative deserves consideration. The comparison is useful precisely because it can show that neither annual fee matches your behavior.
The points enthusiast considering both
Holding both cards can make sense only when each card’s credits and categories are independently valuable. Count the combined fees, assign each purchase to one card, and avoid treating the same trip or restaurant visit as justification for two overlapping benefits. If either card requires manufactured spending, simplify rather than adding complexity.
A practical decision worksheet
- Classify a full year of spending. Separate worldwide restaurant purchases, U.S. supermarket purchases, direct airfare, direct hotels, prepaid portal hotels, Chase Travel purchases and everything else.
- Check category eligibility. Review merchant coding, delivery eligibility, prepaid requirements and annual caps in the current issuer terms.
- List trips on your calendar. Mark airports, likely lounge visits, hotel destinations, booking channels and whether a trusted-traveler application is due.
- Test every credit. Write the purchase that would trigger each credit and whether you would make it without the card. Use zero value for a credit that depends on spending you would not otherwise do.
- Value protection conservatively. Estimate what comparable insurance or lounge visits would cost you, then discount that estimate because coverage has exclusions and claims requirements.
- Compare currencies. Identify your preferred Membership Rewards and Ultimate Rewards transfer destinations and the redemption you are most likely to make.
- Stress-test the result. Recalculate after removing one credit, reducing travel, or booking directly instead of through a portal. Choose the card that remains useful in an ordinary year, not only in a perfect one.
Common mistakes that change the answer
- Counting every credit at face value. A restricted hotel or dining credit is not the same as cash when it changes where or how you spend.
- Ignoring caps and dates. Gold’s restaurant and supermarket bonuses have annual limits, and the select-hotel Reserve credit is stated only through December 31, 2026.
- Using a portal without comparing terms. A higher points rate can be outweighed by a higher room price, weaker cancellation terms or lost loyalty benefits.
- Assuming protection is automatic. Chase states that activation requirements, covered causes and qualifying purchases apply. Keep the benefit guide and receipts.
- Overlooking guest and airport logistics. Lounge access has practical value only when your airports, terminal, schedule and guest needs line up.
- Projecting today’s benefits indefinitely. Credit amounts, participating merchants, hotel programs and annual fees can change. Recheck both issuers’ current pages before renewing.
Bottom line
For a dining-and-supermarket budget, American Express Gold is usually the more efficient choice, especially when its three credits fit spending you already planned and you value Membership Rewards transfers. For a travel-heavy budget, Chase Sapphire Reserve can earn its much higher fee through the travel credit, hotel allowances, lounge access, travel earning and protections—but only when you can actually use those benefits. Calculate your own natural, documented value and let the card that still wins after a conservative stress test have the final say.
