Verdict: The American Express Blue Business Cash is a straightforward $0-annual-fee business card for freelancers and very small companies that put less than $50,000 a year of varied, mostly domestic spending on one card. It earns automatic cash credits rather than points, but its 2% rate applies only up to the calendar-year cap; purchases above that threshold earn 1%. A 2.7% foreign-transaction fee also makes it a poor default for overseas spending. The reviewed 2026 offer adds 0% introductory purchase APR for 12 months, although applicants should confirm the live offer, APR and eligibility before applying.
American Express Blue Business Cash at a glance
| Feature | Published term | What it means for your business |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $0 | You can keep the account open without a recurring card fee. |
| Base rewards | 2% cash back on the first $50,000 of eligible purchases per calendar year; 1% after that | The highest rate is designed for businesses with moderate annual card spend. |
| Maximum cash back at the 2% tier | $1,000 | That is 2% of $50,000 before additional purchases move to 1%. |
| Reward delivery | Automatic statement credit | You do not have to redeem points or select categories. |
| Introductory purchase APR | 0% for 12 months from account opening in the reviewed 2026 offer | Confirm the current application terms; promotions can change. |
| Ongoing purchase APR | 16.99%–28.74% variable in the 2026 review; the March 31, 2026 agreement states Prime Rate + 9.99% to Prime Rate + 19.99% | Your approved rate depends on credit and market conditions. |
| Foreign-transaction fee | 2.7% of each transaction after conversion to U.S. dollars | Use a different card for routine purchases outside the United States. |
| Late or returned-payment fee | Up to $39 | Set reminders or autopay so a small mistake does not erase rewards. |
| Penalty APR | Prime Rate + 25.99% under the March 31, 2026 agreement | Serious delinquency can make balances substantially more expensive. |
Who gets the most value from this card?
The strongest match is a sole proprietor, freelancer, consultant or very small company with mixed domestic expenses and annual card purchases below the $50,000 2% threshold. Because every eligible purchase receives the same base rate, you can buy software, supplies, fuel, meals or shipping without memorizing bonus categories. The cash is credited to your statement automatically, which keeps bookkeeping simple.

The card is less compelling when your spending pattern falls outside that profile:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You spend materially more than $50,000 a year. Once the higher-rate tier is exhausted, further eligible purchases earn 1%. An uncapped flat-rate card may produce more cash on the portion above the threshold.
- Your expenses cluster in one category. A card that pays a higher rate on shipping, office supplies, advertising, gas or travel can outperform a flat 2% return if that category represents a large share of your budget.
- You want travel-style points. Blue Business Cash is a cash-credit product. If transferable Membership Rewards points are more useful to you, compare the Blue Business Plus product and its current terms.
- You buy from overseas merchants. The foreign-transaction fee can consume the value of the base reward, so prioritize a card with no such fee for international use.
How the cash-back cap works
The calendar-year calculation
American Express applies the 2% rate to the first $50,000 of eligible purchases in each calendar year, then applies 1% to eligible purchases after that point. “Calendar year” means the counter resets in January, rather than 12 months after your account-opening date. The issuer automatically posts earned cash back as a statement credit.

At the 2% level, $50,000 of eligible purchases produces $1,000 in base cash back. If you spend $60,000 in eligible purchases, the first $50,000 produces $1,000 and the remaining $10,000 produces $100, for a total of $1,100. At $100,000 of eligible purchases, the total would be $1,500: $1,000 from the first tier and $500 from the next $50,000. These examples describe the base schedule only; a purchase must qualify under the account agreement, and the rate does not turn the card into an uncapped 2% product.
Why the cap matters in budgeting
Estimate your card-eligible spending for the full year before applying. A business that averages roughly $4,167 per month in eligible purchases would reach $50,000 over 12 months. If your invoices, inventory or advertising routinely push you above that pace, model the 1% rate on the excess and compare it with an uncapped alternative. The right comparison is the cash earned on your actual mix, not the headline rate alone.
What “automatic statement credit” changes
There is no redemption threshold or category selection described for the base cash back. Credits reduce the balance on the account, so they can lower the next payment rather than arrive as a separate bank deposit. Keep your accounting records based on the original purchase and the separate credit entry so expenses and rewards remain auditable.
APR, introductory financing and fees
0% introductory purchase APR
NerdWallet’s 2026 review displays a 0% introductory APR on purchases for 12 months from account opening. This is an offer, not a permanent feature: the application page and card agreement control the terms you receive. Confirm the promotional end date, the balance types covered and the rate that begins afterward before using the card to finance equipment or a large invoice.

After the introductory period, the review shows a variable purchase APR of 16.99% to 28.74%. The March 31, 2026 American Express National Bank agreement expresses the purchase rate as the Prime Rate plus 9.99% to 19.99%, so the dollar cost can change when the Prime Rate changes. Carrying a balance for rewards is usually uneconomic once interest applies; pay in full unless the financing cost is part of a deliberate cash-flow plan.
Penalty and payment fees
The same agreement lists a penalty APR of Prime Rate plus 25.99% and late or returned-payment fees of up to $39. It does not list an over-limit fee. A penalty rate or fee can outweigh months of 2% rewards, so schedule at least the minimum payment and use autopay for the statement balance when cash flow permits.
Annual fee and first-year cost
The annual fee is $0. That removes a break-even hurdle: even a modest amount of eligible spending can generate positive base rewards if you pay on time and avoid foreign-transaction charges. It does not eliminate the cost of interest, late payments or currency-conversion fees.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Foreign transactions: the overlooked drawback
The March 31, 2026 agreement charges 2.7% of each foreign transaction after it is converted to U.S. dollars. A $1,000 equivalent purchase would therefore add about $27 in foreign-transaction fees before considering the cash-back credit. Because the base reward is lower than that fee, the card is a poor default for hotels, suppliers, advertising platforms or travel purchases billed outside the United States.

Check where a merchant actually processes the charge. A company with a U.S. website can still route payment through a foreign entity, while a foreign supplier may bill in U.S. dollars and still be treated as a foreign transaction under the agreement. Keep a no-foreign-transaction-fee card available for those cases rather than assuming the card’s flat cash-back rate will cover the surcharge.
Welcome offer: verify the live application terms
NerdWallet displays an offer as high as a $500 statement credit after $5,000 in purchases during the first three months. The publication also notes that welcome offers vary and that applicants may not be eligible. Treat the amount, spending requirement, deadline and eligibility language on the live application page as controlling; do not apply solely for a promotional figure seen elsewhere.
Before counting the bonus in your budget, confirm which transactions qualify, whether returns reduce qualifying purchases, when the credit posts and whether American Express limits bonuses for applicants who have held the product before. Make only ordinary business purchases you can repay; manufacturing spend to reach a bonus can cost more than the credit.

QuickBooks connectivity and year-end reporting
QuickBooks connectivity can reduce manual entry, while a year-end spending summary helps with tax preparation and budget reviews. Reconcile imported transactions against receipts, because a feed connection does not prove that a purchase was business-related or assigned to the correct accounting category.
Cash credits versus points
Statement credits are easy to value: a $10 credit reduces what you owe by $10. They do not provide the transfer flexibility of a points currency. If your company values airline or hotel transfers, compare a points-earning business card even if its reward accounting is more involved.

Just remember, the amount you can spend above your credit limit is not unlimited.”

How it compares with the alternatives readers usually consider
| Decision point | Blue Business Cash | When to compare another type of card |
|---|---|---|
| Reward structure | Flat 2% on the first $50,000 of eligible annual purchases, then 1% | Compare an uncapped flat-rate card if your annual spend is consistently above the threshold. |
| Category concentration | No category tracking is needed for the base rate | Compare category cards when shipping, office supplies, advertising, gas or travel dominate your purchases. |
| Reward currency | Automatic statement credits | Compare a transferable-points business card, such as Blue Business Plus, if points flexibility matters. |
| International use | 2.7% foreign-transaction fee | Compare a card with no foreign-transaction fee for overseas suppliers and travel. |
| Financing | Reviewed 2026 offer: 0% purchase APR for 12 months, then a variable APR | Compare the current terms of any card you are considering; promotional periods and rates vary. |
| Expense administration | Employee cards, spending boundaries, alerts, QuickBooks connectivity and year-end summary | Compare another issuer if you need a control, integration or approval workflow not provided here. |
Ink Business Unlimited is another name readers may encounter when looking for a simple business cash-back card. Its current reward cap, APR, fees and bonus are not established in the terms summarized here, so verify those items directly before making a numerical comparison. The same caution applies to any uncapped or category-specific product.
Application and setup checklist
- Forecast eligible purchases. Add the business expenses you realistically expect to charge from January through December and identify the point at which you would exceed the 2% tier.
- Separate domestic and foreign spend. Move recurring overseas charges to a card without a foreign-transaction fee if the 2.7% charge would exceed the reward.
- Read the live offer. Confirm the 0% period, post-intro APR, welcome-offer amount, spending deadline and eligibility wording on the application page.
- Plan repayment. Decide how the balance will be paid after the introductory period; variable APR can make a carried balance expensive.
- Set controls before issuing employee cards. Assign limits, enable alerts and document who may approve expenses.
- Connect accounting carefully. Link QuickBooks if useful, create a reconciliation routine and preserve receipts for every business purchase.
- Review the agreement. Check the current foreign-transaction, late-payment and penalty-APR provisions because agreements can be amended.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every purchase earns 2%
Track year-to-date eligible purchases. The rate changes after the annual threshold, so a spreadsheet or accounting report should flag when you approach it. Do not project the first-tier rate across your entire annual budget.
Using it abroad because the reward looks simple
Include the 2.7% fee in the cost of every foreign transaction. For recurring international software or supplier bills, verify the billing entity and use a no-foreign-transaction-fee card when appropriate.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Carrying a balance for the welcome bonus
A statement credit is not free money if interest accumulates. Only count purchases you would make anyway and set the payoff schedule before the first statement closes.
Treating Expanded Buying Power as a fixed limit increase
Approval above the stated limit can change with your account history and financial profile. Contact the issuer or test available capacity before a critical large purchase, and keep another payment method ready.
Ignoring employee-card visibility
Employee cards can simplify purchasing but also multiply reconciliation work. Use individual limits and real-time alerts, require receipts, and close cards promptly when a worker leaves or changes roles.
Bottom-line decision
Choose Blue Business Cash when your business wants a $0 annual fee, automatic cash credits, simple flat-rate earning and mostly domestic spending that stays below $50,000 a year. The 12-month 0% purchase offer can help with a planned short-term purchase if you confirm the live terms and repay before the variable APR applies. Look elsewhere when spending will exceed the cap, when one bonus category dominates, when transferable points are more valuable, or when foreign transactions are routine.
