AMD GPU Driver Disables Itself After a Windows 11 Update: How to Diagnose and Fix It

An AMD driver that appears disabled after a Windows 11 update may have been reverted, blocked, or caught in an update conflict. Identify the symptom before choosing a fix.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your AMD graphics driver seems to disable itself after a Windows 11 update, first check what actually changed. AMD documents a case where Windows reverts the driver version after installation (Error 205); Microsoft separately documents a Windows security policy that can block some drivers from loading. These are different problems with different fixes, and neither is established just by the symptom.

First identify what Windows is doing

Before reinstalling anything, note the GPU model, Windows 11 version and build, installed driver version, and the exact Device Manager status or AMD installer error. Then distinguish among these cases:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The driver version changed after installation: This may match AMD Error 205, in which Windows reverts the AMD graphics driver after the AMD Software Package installs.
  • The driver is reported as blocked or will not load: This may involve Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy, but check the relevant logs before treating that policy as the cause.
  • The AMD installer cannot proceed: If it reports Error 202, a Windows update may still be in progress. That is an installation-timing issue, not the same as a post-install rollback.

If Windows reverted the AMD driver version (Error 205)

AMD describes Error 205 this way: “Windows® operating system may have reverted the driver version for your AMD Graphics device, after the AMD Software Package was successfully installed.” AMD’s Error 205 guidance recommends temporarily changing Device Installation Settings, restarting, and reinstalling the AMD Software Package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search Windows for sysdm.cpl and open System Properties.
  2. Select Hardware, then Device Installation Settings.
  3. Choose NO and save the change.
  4. Restart the PC.
  5. Download and reinstall the AMD Software Package for your graphics product.

AMD presents this as a troubleshooting action for Error 205, not as a universal permanent Windows setting. If you changed the setting for this repair, consider restoring your preferred Device Installation Settings afterward; the available AMD guidance does not prescribe a permanent setting for every system.

Get a compatible AMD driver package

Use AMD’s official driver support page to select the exact graphics product, or use AMD’s Auto-Detect tool if the system is supported. AMD says Auto-Detect checks supported Radeon graphics and Ryzen chipset devices and Windows versions, then presents packages for the detected device. Its guidance lists Windows 11 version 21H2 and later; compatibility still depends on the product and driver release. The Auto-Detect article was last updated June 2, 2025.

AMD offers Recommended and Optional packages. Choose the package shown for the detected product and current release rather than assuming the newest package fits every GPU or PC. For an OEM laptop, check the computer maker’s support page as well: it may provide a product-specific driver.

When a clean install may help

If a normal reinstall does not resolve a version conflict, AMD’s installation guide includes a Clean Install option. AMD says it attempts to remove detected AMD driver and software versions before installing the selected components, then restarts the system. Save open work before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD also offers a Factory Reset option in the Auto-Detect workflow. It removes prior package versions and temporarily pauses Windows Updates during installation; AMD says you will not be able to roll back to the previous driver afterward. Because that option removes the rollback path, use it only when you are prepared for that tradeoff.

If Windows says the driver is blocked

A driver that will not load is not necessarily an Error 205 rollback. Microsoft explains that Windows Driver Policy can block kernel-mode drivers that fail its requirements when the policy is enforcing. In the evaluation phase, policy violations are logged but allowed; when enforcement begins, affected drivers can stop loading. Microsoft notes: “This can cause drivers that were working previously to stop loading.”

Check the Code Integrity operational log for events that identify the affected driver and policy before concluding that Windows Driver Policy caused the problem. Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy documentation also advises checking for a WHCP-certified driver through Windows Update or the hardware vendor. In Windows Update, check Optional updates > Driver updates, then check AMD’s support page for a compatible signed driver. Do not disable the policy as a routine fix: Microsoft warns that doing so reduces device security.

If the AMD installer shows Error 202

AMD says Error 202 means a Windows update is currently in progress. Let Windows Update finish, restart if requested, and then retry the AMD Software installation. This installer conflict does not by itself indicate that Windows reverted a successfully installed driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the driver still will not work

Keep the exact Device Manager status or installer error and the installation log, then contact AMD support or the PC maker. This is especially important for OEM laptops, where a vendor may supply a product-specific driver. AMD’s and Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one recovery procedure that applies to every OEM system or Windows build, so the specific error and device details matter.
