“Turn off Waze” can mean three different things: make it inactive with Sleep mode, close its app window, or stop it from accessing your location. Use Sleep mode to pause a session; change Waze’s location permission in your phone’s settings to limit location access. If Waze is connected to CarPlay or Android Auto, disconnect the phone first—Waze says turning it off on the phone turns it off in the car.
Make Waze inactive with Sleep mode
- Open Waze on your phone.
- Tap the menu icon.
- Tap Sleep mode.
Waze says Sleep mode makes the app inactive. This is the in-app option when you want to stop a current Waze session without changing its location permission.

- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the app switcher.
- Find the Waze app window and swipe it up and away until it disappears.
These are Waze’s iPhone and iPad instructions; they should not be treated as a universal Android force-close gesture. If Waze is connected to CarPlay, disconnect the phone first.

Stop or limit Waze location access
Changing location permission controls whether Waze can access location; it does not close the app. Choose the platform below and make Waze’s permission more restrictive or disable it, using the options shown on your version of the operating system.
iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Waze.
- Change Waze’s location permission to a more restrictive choice or turn off its access. The available choices depend on your iOS version.
Waze lists Always and While Using the App as permissions that allow it to use location. Turning off Location Services for the whole device is another option, but it affects other apps too; changing Waze’s own permission is more targeted.

- Open Settings > Location > App location permissions.
- Find Waze and change its permission to a more restrictive choice or Not allowed, if that option is available.
Android menu names and paths vary by device and version. Waze notes that some of its location-permission instructions apply only to Android 12 and later, so follow the labels on your phone if they differ.

Waze says it may check location while not in use, depending on your settings, for features such as planned-drive reminders, traffic updates, and parking assistance. Adjusting Waze’s system location permission is the control for limiting that access.
